Violet Wale

We are considering this name for our baby if they are a girl but our last name is Wale and we aren’t sure about the links to a purple whale. What are some thoughts?

Sadly, I think it does sound like you’re describing a whale. The rhythm is otherwise lovely. [name_m]How[/name_m] about another non-adjective -let name ([name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] etc) or another V name ([name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f]) or something similar ([name_f]Liberty[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Zara[/name_f] or [name_f]Ava[/name_f]).

Once you said, I did see what you mean. I think this has more than the usual potential for hurtful teasing, so I am afraid I would avoid color names with your surname.

To be honest, I think it’s too much
[name_f]Violetta[/name_f] or [name_f]Viola[/name_f] or [name_f]Violante[/name_f] could work

It does sound like you’re describing a whale. [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] could work instead.

You know, at first I was like “yeah, it’s too much of a marine mammal description” but thinking about it, a purple whale isn’t really a negative image unless you make it out to be. To me, a purple whale sounds fabulous, and I could even potentially see little [name_f]Violet[/name_f] using the word play of her full name as a personal icon - have purple whale stickers on her notebooks and whatnot.

I agree with others that [name_f]Violet[/name_f] Wale does sound too descriptive. [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] is a really lovely alternative, as are other -et/-ette names, such as [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] – [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] Wale is beautiful. If you’re looking for a name with a similar appeal to [name_f]Violet[/name_f], maybe:

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] Wale
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] Wale
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f] Wale
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] Wale
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] Wale
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] Wale
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] Wale
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] Wale

Good luck!

[name_m]Even[/name_m] if the first name wasn’t an adjective, I’d advise strongly against using Wale as a name. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] Wale isn’t great, but 99.9% of the time she’ll just be [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

Thank you everyone for taking the time to help us out. We had been considering [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmanuelle[/name_f] too. Everything you’ve all said have been things we’ve considered, so it’s good to hear it from other people. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, in the next week or so, if we do have a girl and what she is like when we get to know her. Thank you again
