Violet

I recently posted considering Violet for my third daughter and wanted to get a sense of how often people are hearing this name in the real world?

I will say that I have been thinking about naming my future children since I was a child and the criteria was always that it be an uncommon but recognizable and established name that one could spell when they heard it and pronounce when they read it.

Since having children of my own, my concerns about the popularity of names have really reduced. Now that my children are in school I notice that we don’t know any children with some of the most popular names like Olivia, Harper or Luna. And yet we know several Islas, Lylas and Coras. My first daughter’s name was in the mid-200s when she was born and there are 3 in her grade. So all in all you never really know and I think it comes down to where you live.

We know one Violet who’s a different age and goes to a different school. I really love the name for many reasons, but I would be disappointed it felt so common. I think it has a fresh and different sound that differentiates it a bit too- as opposed to the Lylas and Islas and Ellas and Ellies.

So, all that said. What’s your take on the popularity of Violet? Do you feel like you know a ton or hear it all the time or does it still sound fresh to you? Also would love to get a general sense of your location if you’re comfortable sharing. Thanks so much!

I know 5+ children under the age of seven with the name [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and I’m not in a very “child-centric” circle (I don’t have children, don’t work in education, etc). It seems to be a very popular name where I’m from.

Interesting! Would love to know approximately where if you’re comfortable sharing?

Oh yeah, I’m in [name_f]Louisiana[/name_f]!

I’m a bit conflicted on this one! First of all, I’m not shocked that your children don’t know any Violets at their school, because it’s always been popular but it’s only in the last few years that it has skyrocketed. It went from #35 to #20 in just one year from 2021 to 2022! For my tastes that would be too popular, especially with the possibility that it’ll continue to rise, but popularity is subjective so it’s really up to your own preferences!

If you’re looking for some alternative suggestions for names that are familiar but unique and with distinct sounds, just in case you don’t go with [name_f]Violet[/name_f], I’d definitely recommend making a post about it. People would be more than happy to give ideas!

Considered it quite seriously for girl #3. We ultimately went a different direction, but considering it again if we have another girl in the future.
I know many though, at least 3 ages 5 and under but not personally in my close circle

It is subjective and while we know a good amount of children under 1 the majority are more in the 2-8 set. But even so, with no Violets it feels usable. Popularity is so subjective, as I’ve learned from having school age children. Even if a name objectively “popular,” unless there are a few in a given friend group or class it still feels individual. But I certainly don’t know all the babies and this is giving me a lot of pause because I never would have considered a name at #20 for my previous children.

I’m in [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] and I’ve actually never met or heard of a [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. It seems a somewhat popular name, but it definitely isn’t here. Nevertheless I like it!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I’m on the US east coast but grew up in the Midwest.

For both places, I would say [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is decently uncommon and actually really fits what you mentioned as “uncommon but recognizable.” Like, I would be a little like “oh, that’s different” if I met one but wouldn’t think anything negative about it like “oh that name doesn’t belong in this day and age” or anything. I think it’s still fresh! (Unlike [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], 5-6 of which have been born in my circles in the last 2 years alone).

To be fair, though, according the SSA its most popular year was last year so they just may not be popping up on school rosters yet. But I’ve yet to hear it so I was a little shocked to see it at #20. It fits very well, though, with the old-is-new trend going on.

Hopefully this helps! You might also be able to look up by state if you’re in the US?

I’m in [name_u]Maryland[/name_u] (right outside of [name_m]Washington[/name_m] D.C) and I’ve never met or even heard of a [name_f]Violet[/name_f], child or adult. I do think that it’s popular, but I still love the name!

Thanks! Yes- we know SO many Charlottes and Ellas. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though they’re both classic names with history they sound bland to me at this point because of how frequently we hear them. So just want to avoid that but realize it’s not a totally uncommon name and people might know others, just hopefully not in the same grade/ group.

I’ve encountered a few little Violets but not all that many - as you say, popularity is a funny thing!

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] gives me sharp but sweet vibes

Im in the pnw region of the US and I do know a few little Violets but not so many that it feels over used. (We used [name_f]Violet[/name_f] as my daughters middle name, and personally I love it, its sweet and classic)

I’m in [name_f]Louisiana[/name_f] too. I saw [name_f]Violet[/name_f] listed in a dance school program, and I overhead someone calling [name_f]Violet[/name_f] in a store once. I live in a small area. It’s possible that it was the same [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
I know it’s getting popular, but I’ve loved [name_f]Violet[/name_f] for almost 20 years!

I WISH I heard [name_f]Violet[/name_f] more often! I agree with you that popularity is really very random and circumstantial. I know no Avas, but two Junipers.

I don’t know any Violets! One girl I know has [name_f]Violet[/name_f] as her middle name, but that’s it.

For reference, I am currently raising three young kiddos in the US Midwest.

I honestly have never met a [name_f]Violet[/name_f] IRL, and I recently looked up the popularity (I think it was in response to your post?) and was thoroughly shocked. The name still feels very fresh and I would be delightfully surprised to see it on a birth announcement! And I live in Ohio

I have two toddlers, live in the [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]East[/name_u] and have encountered zero Violets. As you mentioned it doesn’t sound like other names which is a plus.

Popularity doesn’t mean a lot to me, so maybe take this with a grain of salt, but I do love [name_f]Violet[/name_f]! [name_f]Violet[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] has been on my short list for girls for years and years (probably at least a decade). She’s so dainty and lovely.

I personally don’t know any Violets… I know of two through friends and acquaintances… 1 is probably 10 and the other probably 90. It’s a beautiful name.

Then again, I had the second most popular name in the country the year I was born (when top 10 names were given to much more children), and I didn’t go to school with another person with my same name until I was a junior in high school. And even then, I was rarely in the same class with either of the two other Ashleys in my school at that point. :woman_shrugging: Popular names can be a fluke-ey thing. If you love Violet… I would use her! But if the population bothers you… I do think [name_f]Viola[/name_f] (love the idea of [name_f]Viola[/name_f] nn Lola!) and [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] make nice (albeit a bit more froufrou, I think) alternatives! Also [name_f]Violette[/name_f], but I would not want to deal with the pronunciation corrections with the true [name_u]French[/name_u] spelling.

Good luck!

ETA: Not comfortable sharing my state but I too am in the US northeast.

I’m in [name_u]California[/name_u], and I’ve heard of several young Violets. The only one I’ve met personally is my sister, who is 18. But I know of a few 1st graders, at least one 3rd grader, and a few teenagers named [name_f]Violet[/name_f], too.

I don’t know any [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but I live in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] and it is not a common name here at all. I knew two [name_f]Viola[/name_f] though.

It feels fresh on me because I do not hear it often where I live, and I think that it is getting more popular in [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking countries -

But it is still a dignitous and proper name with historical and floral background.
