Virginia?

I’m really beginning to warm to [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], it is the name of my aunt, but I also think it’s got the perfect Colonial feel. However, the ‘virgin’ part scares me, in the same sense that [name_f]Letitia[/name_f] and [name_f]Titania[/name_f] scare me with that darling little palindrome used for a female body part. Am I worrying too much, or is it completely unusable?

Heeeyyy! I live in [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and we still don’t hear it too much. I know a Girl named [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] (called [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]) I’ve never heard anyone call her “virgin”, it is a classic name. Pair it with something modern and you’ve got a great name! :slight_smile:

my aunty goes by [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] as well :slight_smile: I can imagine most berries would love my mum&her sisters’ full names, haha.

It’s good to hear that about it :slight_smile: I wasn’t sure if it’d be making an open target or not :confused:

I haven’t chosen a middle name yet, but I’m thinking;

[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Honor[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]

I can easily see this person with the nickname Virgin… simply because my name is similar enough to an equally rude word.
However, it will also depend on the person and whether they are an easy target or not. It was mostly friends that called me the name so it was never more than a playful joke and didn’t bother me.
I’ve also heard on here from some teachers that children do get teased but it is never solely because of their names, other factors come into play.

It is a risky name, but it could go either way.

[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] is beautiful! It sounds a bit old-fashioned but is still classic; as in, it’s one of those names that will always be usable but is just experiencing a downswing right now. Feminine but solid, and I love the connection to [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] I (the Virgin [name_f]Queen[/name_f]). I agree, people don’t get teased just because of their names. Teach your children to own their names, love them and wear them with confidence and it won’t matter who tries to tease them.

Really love [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and think it draws such a lovely image in my mind…however I have never known a [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], so I can’t say about the teasing. Personally, I am always so much more concerned about the name being phonetic because my name ([name_f]Leah[/name_f]) was ALWAYS mispronounced throughout school - teachers/substitutes would say [name_u]Lee[/name_u] [name_f]EVERY[/name_f] time (not [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-uh) and that was always a cause for anxiety for me when I was little because I never liked to speak up and correct them…so I think we all have some insecurities we bring to the table because of our own experiences, but I wouldn’t completely throw such a beautiful name out!!

that’s odd, I’ve never known a [name_f]Leah[/name_f] to go by ‘lee’ it’s always [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-ah or [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-uh. For me, [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is [name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_u]Leigh[/name_u], or Li. The spelling of my name caused the same issues for me. No one ever seemed to remember that it’s H-a-l-e-y. Not H-a-i-l-e-y, or H-a-y-l-e-y, or H-a-y-l-e-e, etc. I think that’s why I’m so drawn to names from Georgian/Colonial times, they haven’t got common obscure spellings, and most are so recognizable, without being overly popular (ie; [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f], etc), that people would be almost incapable of getting it wrong.

I don’t think it’s a big deal. Lots of names have teasing potential, and if they don’t kids will come up with something else. I went to school with 2 Virginias, both went by [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]. I don’t honestly know if they ever had problems with their names, but I never witnessed it. I think [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] is such an adorable nickname. My mom’s cousin [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] goes by [name_f]Jenny[/name_f] for some reason…[name_f]Ginny[/name_f] is way better!
