What do you guys think do the name [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]? Perhaps nicknames [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] or [name_f]Vera[/name_f]? I’m not sure what style this name quite is either.
I know Virginia gets some love on Nameberry because it has a regal/neglected vintage vibe, but I’ve never met a Virginia who likes her name. They all go exclusively by Ginny or Ginger or another name entirely. Their complaints match the reasons I can’t bring myself to like Virginia: it’s clunky, it’s awkward, and it just feels old. I want to like it because it’s a family name for me, but I just don’t.
ETA: I would expect siblings to be Patricia, Katherine, Margaret, Helen, Michael, Robert, John, Richard, something along those lines. Classic but with sort of a mid-century feel.
I love [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. It sounds sweet to me and I love [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_m]Woolf[/name_m]. I don’t hear the awkwardness or clunkiness; it’s too bad to hear that Virginias don’t like their name though! I would use it as a middle name for sure.
I knew one [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and although her name was dated, and she was the only one in our 2300 student highschool, I always found it pretty. She was well-liked and intelligent, and I think her name actually made her seem pretty to me. If her name had been [name_f]Megan[/name_f] or [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_f]Emily[/name_f] I probably wouldn’t have thought so. Plus, I’ve always remembered her because of her rare name. We never had any classes together.
I really like the name [name_f]Virginia[/name_f].
That’s so funny that @southern.maple mentioned Virginias not liking their name! My best friend’s cousin is named [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], but she completely hates it, disregards it and goes by her middle name.
I also see it as being old-fashioned, but it’s not an ugly name. I’ve seen/heard way worse. Would I be one of apparently many girls named [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] who hate their name if it was mine? I’m gonna say yes, only because it’s not my personal style, and therefore not a name that I would want for myself.
I think [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] is cute!
I really like the name, but it is more of a GP name for me. I like it because it is easy to spell, has a regal feel to it, is established, and is not all cutesy. It’s stable and beautiful. I also like it because of the song Meet [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], lol. However, it is a GP name for me mainly because it is so generally disliked also, the whole virgin thing. I wouldn’t put it past anyone to use that joke, even though it is juvenile and ridiculous.
With nicknames, I really love [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]!
I absolutely adore it! So sweet and elegand, the association with [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_m]Woolf[/name_m] us just wonderful imo.
I love [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], but understand how those wearing it might not.
Most of my love for [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] stems from a [name_f]Tori[/name_f] [name_m]Amos[/name_m] song though, the way she sings the name is so ethereal and beautiful I just melts any apprehensions I have. I would encourage you to listen to it if you’re not familiar!
While [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] is cute and [name_f]Vera[/name_f] more down-to-earth, I really love the more unexpected [name_f]Nia[/name_f]. I also think [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] or [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] would be a nice update to a name some would consider dated.
I too think of the song Meet [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and this girl who I went to college with whose name was actually [name_f]Virginie[/name_f]. I think it’s a pretty name a bit too classic for my taste, however. I think [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] would be an adorable nickname.
I love the name [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]! Both my grandmothers were Virginias who went by [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], and I have a friend from high school named [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] who goes by the whole name. I’m actually thinking of naming our little girl, due in [name_u]March[/name_u], [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] But she’d probably go by [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] or [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] + middle name.
I like [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] a lot! I think it’s just old enough that it sounds old-fashioned, not dated, like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
I also just found out that [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] is a nickname for [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and I think that’s so cute! Otherwise I like [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] a lot too.
I like [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], though I don’t think I would use it myself. As a kid I had a friend named [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], who always went by [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], and I never realized her name was considered old or vintage until I was much older since she was my point of reference for the name. It never stood out in a bad way, but it still sounded fresh among all the Jessicas and Jennifers.
I love [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]! I don’t like [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] or [name_f]Vera[/name_f] as nicknames. I like the full [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] or maybe [name_f]Nia[/name_f]. I could see a [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] with sibling names like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f].
[name_m]How[/name_m] about just naming her [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] or [name_f]Vera[/name_f], which are both very nice names? The only “virginias” I know have strong ties to the state and go by a nickname anyway.
I love [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and always have. I prefer [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] to [name_f]Vera[/name_f] but think both could possibly work.
I love [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and the nn [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]. This one would have made our list if we didn’t live in [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. Too bad for us…
It’s okay. I like nn [name_f]Ginia[/name_f].
