I prefer the more polished [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]. The [name_m]French[/name_m] version [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] looks overdone to me. It’s the same with other names. If I had a choice between [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] for example, I prefer the less frilly option more often than not.

Thank you, mischa.

I prefer [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] over [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] also. I feel the belle ending changes the feel of these names, less charming (not that belle is bad, just not the feel I am looking for). [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] are different to me. But I am thinking I like the more compact [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] now.

I voted for [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], mostly because it’s less frilly than [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] (there’s nothing wrong with frilly - just not me!). Also, I think where I live, most people would assume the [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] spelling, but [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] might be more common in other parts of the world. I wouldn’t want to constantly correct people. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are lovely!

I say them a little differently too, so they’re sort of like…[name_u]Julie[/name_u] and [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] good names but I prefer Vivan because I like the clean look and find it more practical in English (as in the language) [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is pretty but it sounds to me similar to [name_f]Annette[/name_f], [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Colette[/name_f]. That is, trying to be very [name_m]French[/name_m] and cute.

It depends on the names you would pair with [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] / [name_u]Vivian[/name_u].
If you had [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] as a sister, I’d go with [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], since both names are very feminine and a bit frilly.
For Maebry’s sister, I’d go with [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] since both are simple, more modern and less frilly looking.
Generally I prefer [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], since it looks more feminine and complete to me.

I second that the pronunciation is different. We went with the [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] spelling because we particularly wanted to avoid [name_f]Vivi[/name_f]-anne you could also consider [name_u]Vivien[/name_u]. I agree that for you it really depends on what names you want to pair it with from your list.

Thank you, everyone.

I prefer [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] but, I’m bias because it’s my daughter’s name :wink:

I prefer [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] as well. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] makes me feel like I need to draw out the last syllable, or like you want to give the impression of being [name_m]French[/name_m] (unless you actually are [name_m]French[/name_m], of course). I also think [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is the assumed spelling in English speaking areas, at least in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u].

I love both spellings but slightly prefer [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] because it looks more feminine and original. It is more my style {and I love [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] also-- just a suggestion}

I strongly prefer [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], it’s much more streamlined.

Thank you, everyone. We’ve decided on [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]…at least for now. :wink:
