I was wondering what some of you thought of the name [name]Wallis[/name] (spelled this way only, not [name]Wallace[/name]) for a girl. I think this spelling makes the name more feminine and it’s something that’s definitely growing on me. I love Wallis Jane and I think [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Katharine[/name] is really nice. Opinions?
I think no matter how you spell it, people will still hear [name]Wallace[/name], and the spelling will be problematic. [name]Wallis[/name]/[name]Wallace[/name] doesn’t sound very feminine/cute to me, either, and I honestly can’t get past [name]William[/name] [name]Wallace[/name] of Braveheart fame.
I feel like it’s one of those distinctive names that will probably never transcend its first association with [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Simpson[/name], the divorced woman who married [name]Prince[/name] [name]Edward[/name] after he abdicated the throne to be with her.
But I feel like it could maybe come back once/if those 1930s s-ending names like [name]Gladys[/name], [name]Eunice[/name], and [name]Lois[/name] come back. But not yet.
[name]Love[/name] [name]Wallis[/name]! It’s on my list.
[name]Wallis[/name] is a legit name, used for boys or girls (it’s not a femininization)
I cannot like [name]Wallace[/name], either spellings - it brings to mid men in kilts and that’s just not a pretty, feminine image to me. It just feels very masculine to me.
I think because it has historical context it works. Soundwise it’s just as or more femme than [name]Alice[/name] imo.
Maybe consider a hyphanated name like [name]Wallis[/name]-[name]Ann[/name] or whether or not you use a hyphen just a double name so that gender is obvious.
My main problem is it’s lack of nickname…maybe [name]Lissie[/name]? I am not into [name]Wally[/name].
I don’t really care for it but not for the reasons above. I think it’s feminine enough, I just don’t like the sound enormously.
I think the right girl could pull it off.
I have a hard time imagining what names her sisters would have? Maybe [name]Joan[/name]? I like [name]Joan[/name] a lot more…would have to be other simple and strong names.
I like [name]Hollis[/name] but not [name]Wallis[/name] for some reason.
[name]Wallis[/name] & [name]Joan[/name] would be great.
I think [name]Wallis[/name] pairs well with other strong names, but really anything quirky would work. Anything from [name]Bernadette[/name] or [name]Beatrice[/name] to [name]Wren[/name] or even [name]Harper[/name].
I can’t say I’m keen, mainly because I just think of [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Simpson[/name], it’s synonymous with her.
I’m not a fan of [name]Wallis[/name] or [name]Wallace[/name] for either sex. Upswing [name]Baby[/name] Names did a post on the name a while back. You can check it out here: Failure to Launch Names: Wallis in the 1930's
@southern.maple the article was really interesting thanks for sharing.
[name]Wallis[/name] is nms.
If I meet someone named [name]Wallis[/name] I’d assume it was a family name (probably ln) that was used as a first.
Agree, I’m not a fan of it for either sex. When I hear it, the imagery I have associated with it is not pleasant and therefore doesn’t appeal to me.
For me, [name]Wallis[/name] isn’t particularly appealing in sound so I don’t find it very attractive. [name]One[/name] of my criteria for liking a name is that it has to sound good. I’ve read so much on the British royal family and the story of [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Simpson[/name] that the name will be forever tainted in my eyes. There is also the chance she may be given the nn of [name]Wally[/name] which is a British slang word for a “foolish or ineffectual person”.
[name]Wallis[/name] is definitely all girl to me, because of [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Simpson[/name] (as others have mentioned.) [name]Wallace[/name] is all boy. The name in general does not seem very feminine and is nms; however, I think [name]Wallis[/name] for a girl is just fine.
I know of [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Simpson[/name] but I don’t know much so she has no bearing on the name for me. [name]Wallis[/name] means “foreigner/ stranger”. My mom’s name, [name]Barbara[/name], has the same meaning. So in my mind [name]Wallis[/name]= Mom
I like a lot of harder sounding girl names and softer sounding boy names so my sibset would be something like [name]Wallis[/name] (g), [name]Deryn[/name] (g), [name]Shea[/name] (b), & [name]Bryn[/name] (b). But I really prefer it as a mn, [name]Tallulah[/name] [name]Wallis[/name] or [name]Honora[/name] [name]Wallis[/name]
Shows my nerdy side. lol
I don’t know much about [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Simpson[/name] and only know [name]William[/name] [name]Wallace[/name] from the movie. But the name [name]Wallace[/name] immediately reminds me of the character [name]Wally[/name] in the comic strip [name]Dilbert[/name]. haha
Cute name though. I like [name]Wally[/name].
I think of [name]Wallis[/name] [name]Simpson[/name] as well - and I’ve always thought her name was rather unattractive. It still feels masculine but also a bit dusty and geeky (not in a good way).
[name]Wallace[/name] and Gromit! THAT’S what I was missing. Cute movie.
Never thought of this name. I like the name [name]Hollis[/name], so maybe [name]Wallis[/name] will grow on me after a while. I would probably assume it is a family name as well.
