Want Ayla but cousin was just named Isla

Help!

My husband and I were set on the girl name [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] until his brother and wife named their girl [name_f]Isla[/name_f] last month. We were planning on pronouncing it “AY-la” so it would sound slightly different but is this too close of a name for cousins? I don’t want to create waves in the family or offend anyone but I was curious what everyone’s thoughts were. Would you use the name or pick a different one?

Thanks!

How close are they as brothers/ regionally. If they are going to see each other all the time I would avoid it. But if they are only together at [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] I would say go for it.

I say [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] differently Eye- LAA and EH-luh so I think they are fine for cousins, but not siblings

honestly, i think it’s fine as you’re pronouncing it differently and they are completely different names in terms of origin and meaning. If you liked the name before hand it’s just a coincidence and i’m sure its a frequent occurence in families where people are having babies at similar times. If it’s going to frustrate you however and make you dislike the name [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] then I would probably go with something else but if you still love it then I would say chose it xxx

Ayla and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] sound quite different in my accent. Personally, since they’re two distinct names in terms of origin, I’d still use it. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin C0ra has a cousin named N0ra and they make it work!

Too close for me to use BUT my sisters name is [name_f]Melody[/name_f] and I have a cousin named [name_f]Melanie[/name_f] and it wasn’t really an issue.

I think it’s fine if that’s the name you love! [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin has a name about as similar to mine as [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is to [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] and it’s no problem at all, I like both names!

I don’t think [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are to close personally! Maybe for sisters but I don’t think for extended family.

I don’t think they’re too close if I’m honest. If you’re worried about potential upset, maybe float it with other family members first.

Oh how annoying! I had the reverse problem… [name_f]Isla[/name_f] was top of the list until my cousin used [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]!

I agree with other posters who’ve suggested floating the idea with family first.

Since you’re using the Ay-luh pn, i think it would be fine

If I loved it, I’d use it.

Depends on how often you see them. If you see them often and your kids would grow up close to each other, I personally wouldn’t fo it.
What about [name_f]Ada[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f]?

GO FOR IT!

My cousin named her baby !lyanna so i would never name my child [name_f]Elianna[/name_f] but those are pronounced almost the exact same.

I don’t think [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are even close to that. Also if you love it and you feel it’s the right name for your DD that’s all that matters. You’re not stealing a name or copying you’re just choosing a name you love for your daughter. I think even if you lived close and they grow up together it won’t be a massive issue, but i do see other’s concerns.

In the end it’s all about what makes you feel good and if you and your DH love it then it’s worth it IMO.

Congrats!

I think they’re too similar. I wouldn’t do it.

What about [name_f]Ada[/name_f]? Same sound and feel but more distinct from [name_f]Isla[/name_f].

I have [name_u]Jules[/name_u] and [name_f]Julia[/name_f] as cousins and they are fine. They live close to each other but see each other once a year at most.

Isla and [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] are fine too, I think.

I would go with my first choice, but there’s nothing wrong with compromise. [name_f]Aelia[/name_f] (Ay-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]-Uh) is close enough to [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] with the added syllable for difference if you like

It’s a bit close… if anything talk to your brother and see if they mind having you name your kid so similarly.

I like the suggestion of [name_f]Anya[/name_f].
What about [name_f]Layla[/name_f]?

I have a cousin who named his son [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] 3 years ago. When I got pregnant my husband and I both loved the name. I don’t see my cousin often so we went for it. It was the perfect name for my son. So if you know that’s the right name for you go for it!

I think it’s perfectly fine. [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] aren’t very close at all.
