[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all. We really want to name our son [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], and nickname him [name_m]Jacko[/name_m]… as his brother, [name_u]Jameson[/name_u], usually gets nicknamed Jamo or just gets called [name_u]Jameson[/name_u]! But, we’ve had someone put us down recently telling us the nickname [name_m]Jacko[/name_m] is awful… as you can imagine, crushed me as I love that name and it honours my great grandfather. The reason for wanting to mainly call him by his nickname is because of the ‘son’ ending in both our boy’s names… or does it even matter?
I just want your opinion! If we don’t go for [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] (because someone saying it’s awful really plays on my mind) we would like to name him [name_m]Jake[/name_m] but I’m not certain it goes with [name_u]Jameson[/name_u]… but I will post another thread tomorrow with baby name help as we’re having a B/G twin!!
I know it’s our choice at the end of the day, and we’ve taken a liking to the nn [name_m]Jacko[/name_m] but still…
Thanks you
I feel like it’s a great at-home nickname. I wouldn’t send him to school with it though. All of my family members have quirky nicknames, strictly for family use and I feel like that’s fine!
I don’t think [name_m]Jacko[/name_m] is bad, but it’s hard for me to imagine it on an older teenager or adult. And then he’d have to go by [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] which is far too close to [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] in my opinion.
To get to the nickname [name_m]Jacko[/name_m] could use [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], [name_m]Jacoby[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m] (since [name_m]Jack[/name_m] comes from [name_m]John[/name_m]), [name_m]Joachim[/name_m] or [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] (a bit of a stretch but it could work)
Oter J names you might like: [name_m]Joel[/name_m], [name_u]Jude[/name_u]/[name_m]Judah[/name_m], [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] “[name_m]Jed[/name_m]”, [name_m]Julius[/name_m]
I don’t think [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] and [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] are too close for you. I knew brothers named [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] and [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] and they have never had any problems.
As for the nickname [name_m]Jacko[/name_m], Jacco is a common Dutch name, so I definitely think it’s usable-not awful. However, I would bare in mind that his friends might just call him [name_m]Jack[/name_m].
I think if you give him the name [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] it will allow you (and later, him) to use a variety of nicknames. As for the person who said “[name_m]Jacko[/name_m]” was a bad name, well, he’s not their son, so who cares?
I don’t think [name_m]Jacko[/name_m] is terrible, but I agree with PP that he’ll probably wind up just [name_m]Jack[/name_m] to his friends. (And who knows, [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] could wind up being [name_m]Jim[/name_m].)
If you plan on having another son, I wouldn’t go with [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] because then you’ll feel like you have to continue the theme, but if he’s the last one then it’s fine.
So, I think a [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] & [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] isn’t the WORST thing in the world, but it definitely sets you up to possibly be pigeon-holed should a third boy ever arrive and you’ve now got a -son trend that you may feel forced to continue. And yes, the names are VERY close. Could you just use “[name_m]Jack[/name_m]” as opposed to [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]? You could still get [name_m]Jacko[/name_m] from that without having the names be so close.
As for [name_m]Jacko[/name_m], it really just comes across to me as a “pet name.” Meaning, it may be something you call him at home, but won’t be something he’d put on business cards or request people to call him.
