Wanted: UK 80's names

So here’s the thing, for a while now I’ve been working on a [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fanfiction that revolves around the Ravenclaw’s in [name_m]Harry[/name_m]'s year. My main characters names are non-negotiable, I got them off the old HP & Me interview/ Pottermore so they’re cannon-ish. However I have need for plenty of names for side and minor characters (especially siblings), problem is due to the setting I need names that where popular in the UK in the 1980’s but it looks like the UK didn’t start keeping popularity lists until 2000 (or if they did I can’t find them). I’ve tried to go off the US lists but being from the US I can’t spot which ones would come off as blatantly American. Oh and if you think one of my suggestions is the best choice feel free to say so.I really need second opinions.

[name_m]Anthony[/name_m]

  • Older sister
    Considered names: [name_f]Catherine[/name_f],[name_f]Claudia[/name_f],[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]
Notes: [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]'s Jewish so nothing Biblical but also nothing stereotypically Jewish. I’d also like something fairly common and classic like [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] would be perfect but I have an association I can’t shake.

[name_u]Terry[/name_u]

  • Younger brother
    Considered: [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]
Notes: Looking for one of those popular unisex names from the 80s

[name_f]Amanda[/name_f] “[name_f]Mandy[/name_f]”

  • Younger sister
    Considered: [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] “[name_u]Jessie[/name_u]”, [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] “[name_f]Jenny[/name_f]”
Notes: [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] was huge over here in the 80s but I have a feeling that the same isn’t true in the UK,was it? Would [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] be better or weird if she’s not Cornish? I’m looking for a trendy/common 80’s name with a equally common nickname.

[name_f]Morag[/name_f]

  • Two older sisters
    Considered: [name_f]Catriona[/name_f]/[name_f]Caitriona[/name_f] and [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]/[name_f]Iseabail[/name_f]
Notes: I know they’re both Scottish but do they seem too normal next to [name_f]Morag[/name_f]? [name_f]Morag[/name_f] strikes me as very traditional but I don’t know if it would seem that way in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]
  • Older brother
    Considered:Tadg,[name_m]Duncan[/name_m],[name_m]Uilleam[/name_m]
Notes:I’m completely lost on this one, other then the fact that I want something traditionally Scottish

[name_f]Su[/name_f]

  • Younger sister
    Considered: [name_f]Lin[/name_f]
  • Younger brother
    Considered: [name_m]Bo[/name_m],[name_m]Ty[/name_m]
Notes: [name_f]Su[/name_f] is ethnically Chinese,I’m looking for names that are short Chinese and coincide with an English name

[name_m]Stephen[/name_m]

  • Older sibling
  • Younger Sibling

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]

  • Older sibling
  • Younger sibling
No notes for these two-I’m open to anything boy or girl.

Sorry for the wall of text!

Edited for privacy

Yeah, I know an eighties sibset of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_m]Anthony[/name_m].

Wow this got pushed down quickly. Bumping it back up.

But thank you to CharlieandPerry1 for the link to the UK top 100. That looks very helpful! I’ll comment on specific suggestions once there’s a few more posts.

  • Double Post-

Unfortunately, I am of no use when it comes to information about names in the 80’s UK but I did do a short piece that required a name for a woman Chinese descent.

For sister:

Fei Fei
“luxuriant and beautiful, fragrant flower” or “dancing through air”

[name_f]Mei[/name_f]
“beautiful” or “plum”

Wei
“rose” or “precious”

Wen
“cultured, literacy/literary, ornamental”

Xiao [name_m]Chen[/name_m]
“early morning, dawn”

Ya
“elegant”

For brother:

Hong
“great, vast”

[name_f]Lin[/name_f]
“forest”

[name_m]Park[/name_m]
“[name_f]Cypress[/name_f] tree”

Tao
“long life”

Please, note that I’m American with no [name_f]Asian[/name_f] heritage so I am in no way an expert. These were just what I found through a bunch of internet searches and looking through some books on Chinese history but the sites seemed reputable. I included meanings in case that is important to you; the ones with two meanings have two Chinese characters that can be used.

Good luck!

You’ve both been very helpful-I’d still like some more suggestions though. So bumping this up.

You can’t get much better than CandP’s link to be honest. The top 100 girls and boys names for 1984 for [name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m] is as good as it gets.
