So I think we’ve decided on our daughter’s name who’s due in just over 4 weeks, and would just really love some opinions on it!
What do you think of [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]?
Nicknames will likely be [name_u]Rio[/name_u] and [name_u]Ori[/name_u] (and maybe Oreo)
I did a poll not too long ago asking between [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], and I thank all those who voted and commented. The general consensus seemed to be that most people liked both names but preferred [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. But after thinking long and hard, and testing out both names (by talking to the bump!) we both decided that we just love [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] too much not to use it, we also feel it’s more versatile with all the nickname potential.
Because we still love [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], and couldn’t quite let it go completely, we decided to use it as a middle name.
[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] has been set it stone since well before we conceived her, I lived in [name_f]France[/name_f] for 5 years while growing up and speak [name_m]French[/name_m] (and will teach it to my kids) so they both have a [name_m]French[/name_m] middle name, and it’s the [name_m]French[/name_m] version of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] which is the name of both my grandma, as well as hubby’s grandma who recently passed away.
What do you think of the name as a whole? Does it flow well?
What kind of girl/imagery comes to mind with the name [name_f]Oriana[/name_f]?
Does it sounds ok with brother [name_u]Toby[/name_u]?
I love [name_f]Oriana[/name_f]! I think that the end ‘a’ sounds in both [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] kinda throw the flow off a bit, but otherwise it’s gorgeous! [name_u]Rio[/name_u] and [name_u]Ori[/name_u] are super cute nicknames. I think that, despite being fairly different stylistically, [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] and [name_u]Toby[/name_u] are fine next to each other. It’s pretty cute sibset actually.
It’s a very pretty, dramatic name! I actually really like the flow of [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] - the bouncy rhyminess of the first two names are definitely offset by elegant [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], which has a totally different sound.
I’m not going to lie, my preference would still be for [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] because it’s so lively, spunky and a great match for [name_u]Toby[/name_u], but [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] is very regal and beautiful and, like you say, gives her plenty of nickname potential (Team Oreo!)
If you love [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], then you should go for it. [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] isn’t my style but it flows really well, and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] are both beautiful. And Oreo is an adoreable nickname.
I just wanted to comment & say I’m overjoyed that someone is considering [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] as FN. I’ve loved it for years but hardly ever see it mentioned! [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is in my top 4 as far girl names go - I think it’s a lovely way to connect a honor name to a place/language you love. [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] I’ve always thought was so beautiful & magical! [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] flows well & is absolutely beautiful. I really like it with you son’s name too! Congrats & good luck!
Not personally a fan of the double ‘a’ sound endings of [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] but that’s minor. If you love it you should go for it.
As far as matching goes, [name_u]Toby[/name_u] has more of a nickname feel to me and [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] is much more stately and proper sounding. [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] and [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] is great though, maybe that is his full name, I’m not sure.
Very pretty. I picture a very feminine girl or woman. But I think it would fit a wide variety of personalities and different appearances, which is good since you have no idea what she’ll grow to be like. Great job!
I think the whole name flows nicely. I especially love [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. I think it outshines [name_u]Toby[/name_u] as his name seems more of a nickname.
I can’t stand that [name_u]Ori[/name_u] means “Duck” in my mother tongue, but otherwise [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] is so uncommon and beautiful! Although I do prefer [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is very gorgeous.
If I’m being totally honest, I don’t like [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] at all, and I don’t think [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] and [name_u]Toby[/name_u] make a good pair as siblings. [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is a little clunky imo. But of course whatever you love is what matters.
It’s a lovely combination. I didn’t vote, but much prefer [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] to [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. Since I’ve never met an [name_f]Oriana[/name_f], I think she could be anything she wanted to be. I think [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] is energetic, fun, spontaneous, friendly, well-liked, and smart. [name_u]Toby[/name_u] and [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] are fine together.
Beautiful name, and love how you’re honoring family but still giving her her “own” name. [name_u]Ori[/name_u] and [name_u]Rio[/name_u] are both adorable nicknames!
I’ve only met one [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] (she’s in her late 30s-40s)- it’s a very distinctive name, yet doesn’t seem odd given the popularity of [name_f]Arianna[/name_f] and O names. I prefer [name_u]Ori[/name_u] to [name_u]Rio[/name_u] as a nickname. As for the full name, I would go with [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] for better flow and style cohesiveness. [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] makes me picture a sweet wood nymph or naiad; it gives a very feminine and nature-y image. But it’s not flighty or fluffy; the length of the name and the literary cred gives it a gravitas. Beautiful choice.
Thank you so much to everyone for taking the time to respond! It’s making us feel sure that we’ve got the right name, and that it will be mostly well received!
I agree with those that say with both [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] ending in ‘a’ it throws the flow off a bit, but we feel it’s more important that we love all the names and that they have meaning, rather than the flow being ‘perfect’, and I don’t think it throws the flow off enough to be a problem, it still seems to roll of the tongue easily enough.
I also agree with those that say [name_u]Toby[/name_u] and [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] are pretty different stylistically, and that [name_u]Toby[/name_u] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] sound better as a sibling set. But we try and think of it as we’re naming individuals rather than a matching set, sure we want them to sound believable as siblings, but we feel it’s more important that we absolutely love their names rather than having the perfect sounding sibling set.
@wittyusername103 it was actually your comment on my last post that made me realise just how much I love [name_f]Oriana[/name_f]! And although it’s a bit sad to not have [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] as a first name, I would have been much more upset to lose [name_f]Oriana[/name_f]
