Ways to get to Story?

I can’t use [name]Astoria[/name] (even though I adore the name) because it’s the name of a town here in Oregon, and Hubs has a permanent veto on place names. Does anyone know of another way to get to the nickname [name]Story[/name]/Stori??

Thankies!

<3 Sessha

Hmmm the names coming to mind work mainly with word association.
So, for the nn [name]Story[/name] you could have:

Poesie or [name]Saga[/name], for instance.

Actually, if you went with [name]Saga[/name] [name]Victoria[/name], you would most definitely be entitled to [name]Story[/name]

some may be a bit of a stretch

[name]Stockard[/name]
Steren
Stesichore
[name]Saga[/name] (norse goddess of [name]Poetry[/name] and a swedish word that means story)
Enitan (means person of a story)
Sotiria

I see [name]Serafina[/name] on your list - you could use [name]Story[/name] for [name]Serafina[/name] or use something with the mn [name]Story[/name] and call her [name]Story[/name].

What about just [name]Aster[/name]/Astor if [name]Astoria[/name] is out? I loooove both those names but I hate that people associate it with the tacky part of Queens and not the adorable seaside town (DH and I are quite fond). Also, the name [name]Astoria[/name] would be really weird if you wanted to send your kids to a Waldorf School, right?

I’d just name her [name]Story[/name]. it’s precious.

[name]Victoria[/name]?
[name]Christobel[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]
S. [name]Victoria[/name]?

Sotiria

Oh, and I’ve got another [name]Alice[/name] name for you, though [name]Alice[/name] [name]Willow[/name] is lovely. I was trying to describe a certain blue, and I said “you know, [name]Alice[/name] blue!” And I thought of you.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Blue[/name]

I just found the Norwegian name Torild, meaning thunder-battle (or [name]Torill[/name]). That’s [name]Tori[/name], not Stori.

If you want to go heretical there’s Nestoria :).

[name]Story[/name] is a super cute name on it’s own:)

I actually just had another idea. I know someone who has a baby girl named [name]Holland[/name] whose nickname is Dutch (super cute idea, right?)…so why don’t you pick a name from your favorite children’s book and when you tell people her nickname you can say you got her name from your favorite story. I’m assuming you are a bibliophile since you like the nickname [name]Story[/name]. For example, if I were to pick a name from my favorite stories, I might pick:

[name]Abilene[/name] (The Miraculous [name]Journey[/name] of [name]Edward[/name] Tulane)
[name]Opal[/name] (Because of [name]Winn[/name] [name]Dixie[/name])
[name]Scout[/name] (The Kill A Mockbird)
[name]Cassia[/name] (Matched series)

What do you think? It opens the door to endless thoughtful, creative choices!

Storia is lovely and an italian word for story.
Steorra (an old English word for star) could get you to [name]Story[/name]. [name]Asteria[/name] and Esteri… [name]Serafina[/name] [name]Tori[/name]/[name]Toril[/name].

Here are some more common names that could be turned into that unique nickname:
[name]Stephanie[/name]*
[name]Scarlet[/name]
[name]Sheridan[/name]*
[name]Christina[/name]* ([name]Stina[/name] is a common nn so a take on [name]Stina[/name] cld be Stori)
[name]Samantha[/name]
Silvianna
Kierstan
[name]Natasha[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name]*

And here are some more out there options…
Historia *
[name]Selestia[/name] *
[name]Starria[/name]
Stelline/[name]Stellina[/name]
[name]Santina[/name]
[name]Sigourney[/name]*
[name]Sarita[/name]

  • I starred the ones that I think most easily connect to [name]Story[/name]/i

I know a boy named [name]Story[/name]. It works for him as a full name.

I’m watching this, I’ve been after a full name for [name]Story[/name] other than [name]Astoria[/name] fora long time. I couldn’t do just [name]Story[/name], way too cutesy and I think it would be silly to put on a resume - not something that could be taken seriously.

I worked with a young women named [name]Story[/name]. It never struck me as odd until I actually saw it on a business card and realize it was the word “story”.

If you are okay with nn’s that are a little more obscure. (all my other suggestions were already listed)
The arabic Rawina (storyteller) or yoruban Enitan (person of story) could work too.

Edit:
I just pulled out our Etymology books and looked up Story. (Not that is suggests names but…)
This is what it said: (well abbreviated)
n. […] Probably before 1200 storie […] borrowed from the Old French estorie from the Late Latin storia, and as a learned borrowing in Old French from Latin historia.
I liked the ideas of Estorie. It feels a bit like it could be the french version of Astoria.

I’ve never understood why people insist on naming a child one thing just so they can call the baby by something else!!! In my family you don’t give a baby a nickname before the baby is born. And even then a nickname comes with time when you get to know this little person and see his or her character. All 3 of my children have multiple nicknames. Cause when you think about it a nickname is a term of endearment. If you want to call her [name]Story[/name] why not just name her [name]Story[/name]?? [name]Just[/name] a thought… P.S my youngest is named [name]Story[/name]

I want to apologize to all of you lovely helpful people for not responding sooner! Hubs and I are in the process of moving, so my life (and my mind!) have been very chaotic of late. Thanks for your patience!

rousette - I can see [name]Story[/name] as a nn for [name]Victoria[/name]. I’m not sure about [name]Victoria[/name] herself, she’s a little…well, Victorian for me  I would probably only use [name]Saga[/name] on a boy because of the harsher sounds, but I like the word association idea

mclola - [name]Stockard[/name] and Stesichore are definitely not my style, but Sotiria is gorgeous! I love the meaning too.

bonnielyn - unfortunately Hubs has vetoed [name]Serafina[/name]…I just haven’t the heart to let go of her yet. For some reason [name]Story[/name] as a mn is not ideal for me, but I will flip through my girls’ lists and see what I have that makes a good combo.

poppy - just so you know, I paused in my drafting of this reply to go on a two-hour tangent discovering and falling in love with Waldorf schools. (Holistic education! and they have so many resources for homeschooling!) As for [name]Aster[/name] or Astor…for some reason I hear the “ass” part in these two more than I do in [name]Astoria[/name], probably because of the emphasis, and I worry about the teasing potential.

ninanoo, meetcute, and goodkarmavt - I do think [name]Story[/name] is lovely and fresh on her own, I’m just not totally on board with a word-name fn yet. I think Hubby will strongly object.

emms - Sotiria is pretty much amazing. [name]Christobel[/name], however, is not going to happen :stuck_out_tongue: ([name]Alice[/name] [name]Blue[/name] is darling, but I’m mad about [name]Willow[/name], and Hubs would never agree to the color name)

blade - eek! Heretical is right, haha. Too bad, because Nestoria is a lovely name.

meetcute - that is an original idea! You’re right, I’m a total bibliophile. I’ll have to think about my favorite storybook characters and see what I come up with.

otter - Storia and Esteri are gorgeous! I like Steorra, but it’s a little hard for me to say.

names123 - thank you for your suggestions! For me, Historia is the only one that really seems like an intuitive full name for [name]Story[/name], but I do love [name]Natasha[/name], [name]Anastasia[/name], and [name]Celestia[/name] (this spelling) for themselves.

flick - I hear you. I think my problem is that nothing seems as intuitive and perfect for a full name as [name]Astoria[/name]. I’m not sure I can commit to [name]Story[/name] on her own. I just want to see what other options are out there before I let this one go.

lex - Rawina is pretty…you know if we’re using storyteller names to get to [name]Story[/name], this might be the perfect place to put Scheherazade! My husband would croak… Estorie is amazing! [name]How[/name] would one pronounce it? I’m usually quite terrible with French pronunciations, but it’s such a perfect idea. Thank you!

meriyah2 - In my case, it’s because I’m not as brave as you  I have trouble committing to a word name as a first name, partly because my husband usually shoots them down right out the gate, and partly because I want to give my child options I guess. For an [name]Astoria[/name], she can go by [name]Story[/name] her whole life, but if she experiences teasing or she’s worried about how it will look on a resume, she can use her full name. I met a girl named [name]Story[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] and thought that was a lovely solution…she has a traditional middle to fall back on if her first gives her too much trouble. I’m not a fan of most traditional names though, so it would be hard for me to give one even as a middle.

So a couple of questions:

    • is the nickname [name]Story[/name] worth going through all the trouble of finding a full name alternative to [name]Astoria[/name]? Or am I really just pining for a name I can’t replace? Because the idea of using [name]Story[/name] on its own, whether as a first or a middle, doesn’t seem to appeal to me as much.
    • does [name]Wisteria[/name] work? That one’s been on my list forever, with the nn Wish, but it’s similar in sound to [name]Astoria[/name] and suggestions like Esteri and [name]Asteria[/name]. Thoughts?

As always, Berries rock my socks

Why not [name]Story[/name] as the middle name? You can give her a more classic first name, and call her [name]Story[/name] whenever you like.
