One of our top girl names is McKelle. [name_f]My[/name_f] grandpa is [name_m]Mick[/name_m] and my dad is [name_u]Kelly[/name_u]. We love [name_m]Mick[/name_m] for a NN. Which spelling is best? I like McKelle and McKel, not sure how I feel about the capital K… will she have trouble with it her whole life? Forms, licenses, spelling it over the phone, etc. or is it not a big deal?
I voted for Mickelle. My first instinct was to pronounce McKelle as “mc-kelly”, but because Mickelle looks like Michelle I pronounced it “Mick-ell”. The downside to that is people might misread the name as Michelle … I suppose it depends which correction you’re happier to make.
Another option that honours both Mick and Kelly and can have the nn Mick is Michaela. I’m sure you’ve considered it, but I thought I’d mention it because I think you’d have less spelling and pronunciation issues.
Thank you for the feedback. There is a McKell spelling but I like “[name_f]Elle[/name_f]” as one possible nn and love that name. I also feel like it looks more finished with the e but I hadn’t thought of Mc-[name_u]Kelly[/name_u] being said. Yes, the Mickelle looks like [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], I thought of that one. [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] came up but we love unique!
McKell could be a good option for you then. I think it looks more complete than McKel and the pronunciation is straightforward. You could use [name_f]Elle[/name_f] as a nickname for McKell no problems.
Mickelle would work best because as @Dechen already pointed out, it looks like more common “[name_f]Michelle[/name_f]”. I’d think it was pronunced “[name_m]Mick[/name_m]-KELL”. I wouldn’t do capital K, american’s at least don’t do really well with “random capitalisation” of names. She might be mistaken for [name_u]Michael[/name_u] or [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], though.
