My boyfriend and I finally came up with two combos we really like. Let me know what you think and if you have any other combos with the same vibe they are always welcome. We are hoping to conceive this year!
[name]Maverick[/name] [name]Leo[/name]- [name]Leo[/name] is my grandfather/poppy’s name he was given while he was serving our country in WW2 because no one could pronounce his Italian name. Now that he has passed away I knew it was a given to use his name in one of our name combos.
[name]Anton[/name] [name]Grey[/name]- [name]Anton[/name] is my boyfriends middle name, he is a [name]JR[/name] so his father has the same middle and my boyfriends passed Great grandfather has that as a middle name as well. So it is a family name from his side.
I prefer [name]Anton[/name] [name]Grey[/name] of the two, but I love the family reasons behind [name]Leo[/name]. Any possibility of using [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Anton[/name] together? [name]Leo[/name] [name]Anton[/name] or [name]Anton[/name] [name]Leo[/name] (as pp suggested).
(Also, I’m so curious about what given name belonged to your grandfather, [name]Leo[/name]. Would you be willing to share it?)
Thank you berries! My boyfriend is definitley leaning towards [name]Anton[/name], I actually never thought about using [name]Anton[/name] [name]Leo[/name]. Which I like the sound of that as well. Either or could work very well. It is a hard choice to make.
I never thought of using [name]Leo[/name] and having [name]Anton[/name] [name]Leo[/name] instead of [name]Grey[/name]. I definitely like that combo as well and it is representing both sides.
His name was [name]Aloysius[/name]. He was given the name after [name]Saint[/name] [name]Aloysius[/name] which was an Italian aristocrat who became a member of the Society of [name]Jesus[/name]. And while still a student at the [name]Roman[/name] College, he died as a result of caring for the victims of an epidemic. I find that very interesting about the [name]Saint[/name] since my grandfather was a very caring, loving, selfless person and very much into faith. Plus serving his country you have to care for others around you in terrible times.
Also Back then people could not pronounce names at all. [name]Just[/name] like how our family members last names were changed when they arrive at [name]Ellis[/name] Island. I have no idea where his fellow army mates came up with [name]Leo[/name] but that is what I always knew him as other than [name]Poppy[/name] lol
[name]Anton[/name] [name]Grey[/name] or [name]Anton[/name] [name]Leo[/name] would both be great! [name]IMO[/name] [name]Anton[/name] is an underused gem in the US (more common in some northern European countries I think). To me, it’s a friendly, worldly, intelligent and down-to-earth kind of name.
Personally, I’d cut [name]Maverick[/name], as it’s one of my least favorite names ever (I think it is my #1 least favorite from any names in the top 500 most common). Doesn’t hold up next to the awesomeness of [name]Anton[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] (or [name]Grey[/name]- which isn’t in the same awesome-caliber range as [name]Anton[/name] or [name]Leo[/name] in my book, but is solid nonetheless, and does work well in the middle spot, especially with [name]Anton[/name])
Exactly! This happened a great deal in my family too (especially in the Polish and Italian lines), which is why I was curious to see how close to the original it was. For example, my great-grandmother was [name]Annunziata[/name], and became [name]Nancy[/name]. Bronislava became [name]Bertha[/name]. Liboria became [name]Lillian[/name]. And somehow, Flaminio became [name]Flemming[/name] and Calogero became [name]James[/name].
I vote for [name]Leo[/name] [name]Anton[/name] or [name]Anton[/name] [name]Leo[/name] (I like the name [name]Leo[/name] better for the fn, but [name]Anton[/name] [name]Leo[/name] does flow better.)
Thank you guys soo much! I never realized by using a family name he can grow up with a reason of why we chose his name. I loved hearing stories about my poppy and his days in war. So to explain that to our future child whether it is a boy or girl would be a amazing. I appreciate the input. I was nervous as to what combo would work and I am glad you suggest [name]Anton[/name] [name]Leo[/name]. I really can not believe I did not think of that.
It is so bizarre to me! [name]Even[/name] the names you listed has nothing to do with their given names. It blows my minds how they come up with something really not closely related when now a days almost majority or new names or nicknames are super close to the given name. I 100% Italian so I know all about that! Thank you for sharing that little history about your family names. It is interesting to see how they received names just like my poppy did. I love it and to be able to explain to my son (if we have one) would be amazing.
I prefer [name]Anton[/name] [name]Grey[/name] because I think it would suit all kinds of a person. For example a banker, a scientist, a postman and a teacher. Whereas [name]Maverick[/name] is quite a tough name which makes me think of a bully.
I think the idea of being viewed as “American” was very important, so having an common, everyday name that typical Americans didn’t struggle with was greatly desired (another example that I forgot to mention, my grandmother was named [name]Emilia[/name] and never changed her name because it was easily recognized, but her younger sister/my great-aunt was born Giorgetta and has always gone by [name]Georgette[/name] even to this day. I only found out about her birth name a few years ago and she said she hated it because it was so awkward, which is a real shame).
I am also drawn to family names because they can serve as a wonderful introduction to heritage and personal history. Good for you for considering [name]Anton[/name] [name]Leo[/name] and blending both sides of your child’s family history.
