WDYT about Ebenezer

My DH who often shoots down all my name ponderings has suddenly decided to suggest a name he likes: [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m].

So what do you think?

Could you see it on a little boy today? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the name with [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] as siblings? What middle names do you like with [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m]? All thoughts are welcome.

I’m probably in the minority here, but I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m]! I love the meaning, I love the fusty-funkiness, I love some potential nicknames ([name_m]Eben[/name_m] if it sounds good with your last name, or [name_m]Zeb[/name_m]). I think it sounds marvelous with [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] if you don’t mind brothers sharing an initial. It’s wearable for a child today, but it will definitely turn heads. I would anticipate a lot of disapproval, especially from older generations. However, an awesome child will slowly win people over to a bold name, and it will soon be associated with him in a positive way.
Kudos to your husband, and to you for considering it! It’s on our list if number four is a boy and if we’re up to facing my mother in law’s wrath

I like [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] but I think it might be a bit too associated with Scrooge for some people. What about just [name_m]Eben[/name_m]?
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and [name_m]Eben[/name_m]!

Honestly, all I can think of is Scrooge. I personally would not use the name. I think it could be a lot for any boy or man to carry.

All I think of [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] Scrooge! So I don’t like it sorry.

Makes me think of scrooge, sorry dont like it. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]?

I love [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] and I think it goes great with [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]. They all have a vintage feel. I do think of [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] Scrooge, but I don’t it’s really that bad of an association since he’s part of a classic [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] story and the character turns good in the end.

I would love to meet a sibset of [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], and [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m].

I love it. I wouldn’t worry too much about the [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] Scrooge association. I know a few posters have said that they can only think of Scrooge, but meeting a little [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] would change that. [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] has totally made a come back despite [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] the Grouch. And big names like [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] are becoming more usable all the time, especially if they have cute nicknames.

All I think about is Scrooge. I feel pity at the thought of a kid seeing adults raise eyebrows, or giggles behind his back, when he has to say his own name. The story of [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] Scrooge is going to be on TV, one version or another, every Xmas so he would be forced to cope differently than his siblings in several situations. That just seems unfair.

I definently appreciate all the input. Please keep it coming. I like [name_m]Eben[/name_m], [name_m]Ben[/name_m], or [name_m]Benny[/name_m] for nns if he didn’t like [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m]. [name_u]Zen[/name_u] or [name_m]Zeb[/name_m] are also interesting. [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] is an okay name but I keep hearing it pop up and I’d rather not have another super popular name like [name_m]Elijah[/name_m].
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] just started Kindergarden and there is another [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_f]El[/name_f]----- in his class of 15. He has a different last name but it starts with the same first letters.
On the other hand I don’t want to choose a name just because it is not popular.

Scrooge is the first and probably only thing people will think of. That is a tough thing to overcome when trying to make a first impression.

I think [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] is such a great name! I definitely think of Scrooge, but like someone else mentioned, the character ends up good at the end. I’m a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] and one of my favorite hymns is Come Thou [name_m]Fount[/name_m] of [name_f]Every[/name_f] Blessing and a line in the hymn is “here I raise my [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m]” (which means stone of help), so I have positive thoughts towards the name for that reason too. I also [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the possibility of the nn [name_m]Ben[/name_m]. (Another favorite name of mine.) Anyways, all this to say that I love [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m]. It’s hard to think of a middle name that can stand up to it.

[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_m]Abel[/name_m] (my son’s name is [name_m]Abel[/name_m]).
[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_m]Noble[/name_m]
[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_m]Fox[/name_m]
[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_m]Clive[/name_m]

Sorry for double post!

Oliveshoot that is exactly what I thought of when I read the title of this thread. It’s actually one of my favorite hymns and while I do think of Scrooge I also always think of the hymn too. I have really begun to like this name!

I think it is so sweet, and fits well in your sibset. I like it best with the nickname [name_m]Eben[/name_m].

I find it interesting that we focus on Scrooge’s negative traits instead of his transformation at the end of the story. I think [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] would work in the middle spot, but it’s a bit too clunky and unwieldy as a first name. Not to mention [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], and [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] as siblings gives off quite the austere Puritan vibe.

I like [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m]! We considered it. In the end we went for Ezeriah [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] :).

[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], & [name_m]Matteo[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Malachi[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_u]Noah[/name_u]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Josiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Moses[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Nazareth[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_u]Micah[/name_u]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_u]Zion[/name_u]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Judah[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Timothy[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_m]Solomon[/name_m]

I have a hard time seeing it on a boy today; it just feels a little too fusty.

[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] has a similar Colonial feel to it as do [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], but to me it still stands out because it’s a name that hasn’t been “made modern.” You wouldn’t balk to meet a little [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] or [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] these days, but [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] would be very unexpected. I hope that rationale makes sense.

[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_u]Jordan[/name_u]
[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_m]Nolan[/name_m]
[name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]

I like [name_m]Eben[/name_m]. I can see the appeal of [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m], but it seems much heavier than your kids names.

What do you think about [name_m]Ebenezer[/name_m] [name_u]Alden[/name_u]?
