What could be used with (a girl and a boy’s name that would sound good with it for unknown sex twins)? What mn’s would work well with this name? It is pronounced [name]Ky[/name]-yoo
I can only think of the whiny, bald, Canadian cartoon character. Sorry!
irishmom
I think it would be cute, but it does bring to mind the cartoon. Are you looking for something ‘cute’? I was just thinking the same name the other day at my inlaws (we don’t have TV) my boys were watching the cartoon and I thought that would be a cute name if it wasn’t the cartoon. It made me think [name]Casper[/name] would be a cute name too, if not for the ghost!
Me too. Sorry
Unfortunately, I think of the cartoon character, too.
Good luck!
ditto to everyone else…
Have you seen the show??? Must watch it if not - it may ruin the name for you, but better to find out now than later. If you have access to PBS Sprout, a cable channel, try that. If in U.S., try PBS. It is SOOOOO annoying on several levels, but the kids love it!
If you live somewhere where other people have this name, it’s ok. I don’t even have kids and I was flipping channels one day, I thought the theme song was cute, and I was kinda curious what a Caillou was. Caillou was worried about going to school. I wonder if you lived in a place where people have either never heard of the show or don’t have kids, or this is a name other people have, then it would be ok.
People have some affection for names or aversions, sometimes, on these kid shows/characters, but [name]Madeline[/name] did very well, [name]Eloise[/name] is doing ok (for someone I hear is a brat?), [name]Emily[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is ok, even [name]Barney[/name] for a child’s name doesn’t make people think it’s just the dinosaur. Here is a recent blog from the summer giving people ideas of using names that have been singled out as having too much of a stereotype or stigma of character, but which may be ready for use:

I like the sound of Caillou, but I take it from the earlier posts, this character is a little overbearing. If Caillou is a name where you live (I’m guessing not the US?) that other people share, and the character was just given a sort of “typical” name, then I would use it if you like it.
I actually thought of this name because of the kid’s cartoon but I can see that people think of it very negatively perhaps because it is the only place they have heard the name. Oh well, I will add it to my guilty pleasures list!
I got my nephew hooked on this show, so we watch it whenever it’s on tv and I even got DVD’s from the library for him, anyway it hing the name is quite cute, and could have the nickname [name]Kai[/name], recently my nephew has decided his name is Caillou, he’ll walk around saying “I’m caillou” or “my name is Caillou”, which has really made it grow on me, I don’t think he’s much of a brat, and even if he is, name association is stupid, we’d have a very narrow name pool if people never used names with bad associations. It could definitely work
Everyone uses name association whether it’s something you want to admit to or not, just how it goes. People leave an impression on us and so we get a certain association with a name and when we meet someone else with the same name, we usually think of the new person as the old one. It’s more common with unique names than popular names.
Caillou means pebble in French, I wouldn’t consider it to be a usable name.
Like everyone else, it reminds me of the cartoon. A name with a similar feel is the name [name]Calliope[/name]! I think it’s pronounced Kah-lie-oh-p
It means pebble in French. Choosing a random word from another language as a name rarely works out and makes the parents appear uneducated about the language, which often seems to be the opposite of the desired effect.
Calliope is a great girl’s name, but for a boy if you want the nn Cal I would suggest something like Calvin or Callum.
Edit: It’s not a name in French. Naming your child Caillou would be akin to a non-English speaker choosing the name Punky Brewster or something.
I also think of the ever annoying bald, whiny character. I couldn’t take it seriously on an actual child.
What about [name]Caio[/name]/Kaio? ([name]Kai[/name]-oh) I met one while working at a daycare years ago. It seems made up I know, but it was an cultural/ethnic name, but I can’t remember which!!
I think its a great name and I’ve been waiting for someone to use it.
All I think of is the little bald boy on TV. Sorry
All I can think of is the cartoon character. I prefer just [name_u]Kai[/name_u] or [name_m]Malachi[/name_m].
I love it! I know a boy named this he’s probably 2-3 now.
As a Canadian teen, all I think of is that horrible, whiny, spoiled brat cartoon. I think most younger people, especially those in the US and [name_f]Canada[/name_f], would connect it to that, and, trust me, once you get past age 7, everyone generally hates it. Sorry.
Have you ever seen the bald, whiny boy on Sprout that shares the same name? No, I think your child will get bullied.
