I heard an interview about that new movie, “Boyhood” that was filmed over the course of 12 years and stars [name_f]Ellar[/name_f] [name_m]Coltrane[/name_m] and I was struck by his name!
I looked it up and [name_f]Ellar[/name_f] seems to be mostly used for a girl, but I like it for a boy.
What do you think?
I like it, though I do worry that in some accents it may sound to similar if not identical to [name_f]Ella[/name_f]
I would be wary of choosing it for these reasons:
- it may be misheard as [name_f]Ella[/name_f]
- it’s a rare name that would “date” a child to a particular time frame
- it’s closely associated with one person in the news that people would say “Oh yeah, like the boy in Boyhood?”
There is always [name_m]Ellard[/name_m] which sounds a bit more masculine.
I prefer the similar name [name_u]Ellery[/name_u].
Ditto this.
It’s one of those names that sounds incomplete to me. Like you’re meaning to say something like Steller, [name_m]Keller[/name_m] or [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]
I love [name_f]Ellar[/name_f] as a boy name. I think it fits better on a boy than a girl anyway. I was surprised that this website doesn’t have [name_f]Ellar[/name_f] as a boy name too.
I love that movie, Boyhood! [name_f]Ellar[/name_f] is a pretty cool name for a boy, I think. Definitely unusual and unique. In my accent, it would not be mistaken for [name_f]Ella[/name_f] but I could see that happening in other accents.
[name_f]Lovely[/name_f], jazzy laid back sounding name, I think it’s too unusual to date stamp a child. Also, sort of has a Scandinavian vibe for me, not sure why
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Ellar[/name_f] on a boy! Or [name_f]Eller[/name_f]!
Coupled with a great Middle would sound great!
I prefer [name_u]Ellery[/name_u], sorry. Or [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. [name_f]Ellar[/name_f] and [name_f]Ella[/name_f] sound the same in my accent and [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is such a popular name in [name_m]Britain[/name_m] so [name_f]Ellar[/name_f] would almost definitely get assumed to be a girl.
It’s very ugly
I like it, although I live in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u] and it sounds different from [name_f]Ella[/name_f] with my accent and I think that would be a deal-breaker if it applied to me since [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is so popular. It sounds like an old-school, kind of jazzy name (though maybe that’s the [name_m]Coltrane[/name_m] bleeding through from the Boyhood actor’s surname).
Yes, Boyhood was the first thing I thought off… I recently saw that movie about a month ago. (It was so sad.)
I don’t know anyone irl with the name, but I had heard of it before the movie. It just seems so unoriginal to me, kind of… Trendy? Cheesy? I don’t know. I wouldn’t use it. I prefer [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. But that being said I don’t really like any ‘[name_f]Ell[/name_f]’ names on boys.
It’s very odd. I don’t care for it
