My husband suggested [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] yesterday morning in response to my crazy rant about now I wanted to honor my Mom and [name_f]Mil[/name_f] if we have a girl. I have been thinking about it ever since. I checked a few forums with positive view points but, wanted to see what Berrys thought. My favorite names are [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], so my biggest issue is [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] doesn’t match my normal style. All opinions are welcome. So feel free to let me know how you came to your own opinion.
I love [name_f]Lilac[/name_f]. I just like the nice gentle sound, and purple (though not lilac) happens to be one of my favourite colours. To me, [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] has more of a vintage, Victorian flower name vibe, even though it may actually be a more modern, colour/word name, so I actually think [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] would fit well with classics like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
I like [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] quite a lot! I don’t know if I’d have the guts to use it, but I seriously considered it as a MN for [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. I loved [name_f]Lila[/name_f] quite a while back (still do, but a family member semi-ruined it for me), so I found [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] too odd of a name, but I think it is lovely! I would love to meet a little [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], or even [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Lilac[/name_f]? If it’s an honor name, it can still honor in the MN spot, and I think it’s easier to use as a MN. You don’t have to be so brave.
Ashthedreamer: Thank you for your reply. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] would have been a beautiful name. I’m not sure if I want to use it for a first or middle name. The good thing about being brave with names for me is that my husband’s family is into unique names ( or what they think is unique) and my grandmother used weird names for all her kids. That’s kinda why I’m looking for an honor name outside my mom’s name. She hates her name and her slightly better nn. My mil has a much better name but is also not a fan.
I think [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] is beautiful! Charming and sweet. I actually think [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is absolutely swoon-worthy.
Good luck!
I love it. It’s easy to throw anything in the middle name spot but [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] would make for a beautiful name so why not let it shine in the front!
It doesn’t immediately roll off the tongue right, but after I say it a few times, it sounds just fine. And interestingly enough, it does flow well with the reserved and classic [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u].
I love [name_f]Lilac[/name_f]! It’s such a beautiful name and a really beautiful flower! Our styles seem to be really different, so I’d personally go with [name_f]Lilac[/name_f]. I love nature names.
[name_f]Lilac[/name_f] is an interesting pick. I personally don’t like the ack sound at the end. [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] means [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] in italian so that is an option if you like it. If not I do see it fitting in nicely with other unusual victorian style names.
I likely [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] because of the sweet nickname potential: [name_f]Lil[/name_f], [name_f]Lili[/name_f], Li (as in lie), or even [name_f]Lacy[/name_f] or [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] (a stretch, but who knows). I think it also seems aristocratic, because of how shortly the lilac blooms. I love it and it’s high on my list of middle names. But very lovely as a first, too.
It’s funny, I tend to like pretty, shorter flower names in a 3 name set, and [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] is perfect with [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]!
I agree with the “ack” sound at the end being a little bit of a turn off, but as I’ve been reading the responses to this thread using [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] over and over again, I’ll admit it has grown on me. It’s actually pretty sweet, and it is underused.
Lilacs are my favourite flowers, and in theory I want to love [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] as a first name, but in practice, this thread has confirmed for me that the last syllable is sometimes pronounced like “LACK” and that’s a turn-off for me (I tend to say it more like “[name_m]LOCK[/name_m]”, but this varies a lot across people). I find it generally doesn’t roll easily off the tongue, for whatever reason. [name_f]Lila[/name_f] is one of my very favourites, so for a first name, I’d use [name_f]Lila[/name_f] as a subtle tribute to lilacs, or else I’d use [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] as a middle name.
