DH & I are TTC and starting to put together our short list. Names we have discussed so far are mostly middle names we agreed on like [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_f]Antonia[/name_f], and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]. Now, first names we are opposite on. He isn’t willing to discuss first names yet but I mentioned a name that will most likely be in our first daughter’s name no matter what.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f], which means moon, is a name I’ve loved since I was little. It’s short, spunky, and so cute and sweet. I know the HP reference but that doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is that my brother used it to name his new puppy. That is one of two reasons why DH vetoed the name twice. The other reason he finds it too unusual and cutesy.
Is DH right? Is [name_f]Luna[/name_f] unusable for us due to my brother’s dog and is it too out there? Are there any similar names that might be more to DH’s taste?
He likes names like some of our middles [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (honor name), [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] (honor name), [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] (honor name), [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (honor name). He also likes names I’ve vetoed like [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_f]Linda[/name_f], etc.
Names I like are in my signatute. Please help! I really don’t want to give up on [name_f]Luna[/name_f] unless I have to.
I think it depends on how often you see this dog. If you live with your brother and therefore the dog lives with you, then yeah I’d probably veto it. If your brother lives elsewhere then it’s fine, albeit kind of strange, but fine.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] certainly isn’t too out there. It is towards the middle of the top 100 and definitely is well-known to the point where people won’t think, “wow what an odd choice!” If you love it and can get past the dog thing, then I say use it and fwiw, [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] is quite fantastic.
Some similar names…
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Selena[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
There’s nothing really wrong with it I suppose but still a bit of an unfortunate situation. We have a dog and frequent several dog parks in our area and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] does seem to be a common name amongst pups recently. I love [name_f]Moon[/name_f] as a MN too. I love [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] from your sig. [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] would be lovely.
A little strange to be honest if you use it now. Although I think baby trumps pet although it is a bit too late for that now perhaps? Did you not know about the name? [name_m]How[/name_m] long has he had the dog?
As for [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. It is OK! I love how it is 4 letters. It sounds so lovely. It is really lovely. Incredibly too used for my tastes and kind of trendy which I hate.
Now [name_f]ANTONIA[/name_f]!?!?!?! [name_f]ANTONIA[/name_f]!!! [name_u]Love[/name_u] it. Perfection. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous GORGEOUS name. Go with [name_f]Antonia[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. The dog situation is pretty awkward though. My cat’s name is [name_f]Lily[/name_f], and if my brother named his daughter that it would definitely be weird for me. But not unforgivable by any means! If you love [name_f]Luna[/name_f], you should use it. It’s not at all “unusual” or “cutesy.” It’s a beautiful name that I believe will age well. You could always use it as a middle name if you have to!
Obviously, I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. It’s beautiful, sweet and whimsical. It seems very familiar now, imo, so definitely not too out there. I also dislike how this name seems to be a popular choice among pets, but I try not to let it bothers me too much. Everytime I hear a dog or cat named this, I also try to imagine a girl, just so I don’t associate it with “pet name” too much (I am beyond upset everytime I hear anyone saying [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is just dog/cat’s name. It’s so exasperating!). I guess in the end, it depends on how do you feel about your daughter sharing the name with your brother’s dog. If you feel it’s ok, then it’s okay. There’s no right or wrong in this.
Seems like it is split down the middle. I want to use [name_f]Luna[/name_f] as a first name but it may only be good for middle name. Thanks for all the feedback. It is definitely going to help us as we narrow down top girl names and combos. Hoping for a little girl to use names like [name_f]Luna[/name_f] On.
Before I was a namenerd, my only association with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] was from HP. I didn’t think it was too common, so I admit I named my dog [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I have noticed how popular it is among pets, which is something to consider. However, so are names like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is also growing in popularity with babies, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. As for your brother’s dog being named [name_f]Luna[/name_f], I think it really depends on how you feel about it. My cousin had a dog named [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], and another cousin had a daughter named [name_f]Rose[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], and it was never awkward. Granted, they were cousins instead of siblings.
Sorry for the rambling, hope that provided some insight! I think the best thing to suggest is go with what you love.
Forgot to add: since [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Legend[/name_u]'s daughter is named [name_f]Luna[/name_f], there is a well known celebrity baby with the name, so that’s a human association. I just hope [name_f]Luna[/name_f] doesn’t become too popular because it’s such a lovely name and I don’t want it to be seen as trendy.
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]LUNA[/name_f]! It’s been one of my favorite names since I read HP. I love everything about it- I think it’s perfect. I’m currently not able to use it for any of my daughters because my husband is against naming one of ours after favorite characters unless they’re all named that way- and we could never agree on which ones to use, lol. But I’m still hoping. I think it would be weird to grow up and be called the same thing as my uncle’s dog- but I love it as a MN.
I wouldn’t use it if you can’t get your husband on board. Otherwise I think it’s a fine name. Another idea maybe is to use [name_f]Luna[/name_f] as a nn. [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], for example, could be nick named [name_f]Luna[/name_f]
I dislike [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I can’t put my finger on what it is, but names like [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], etc are unattractive to me.
