WDYT of Pollyanna?

[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]?

What middle names could go with it, given its length and ending the A sound?

Association of the usage to describe some trope would keep me from using it. I like [name_f]Polly[/name_f] on it’s own though.
Polly…
[name_f]Lenore[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Justine[/name_f]
[name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_u]Reign[/name_u]
[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] sound, but the slang term is enough to keep me from thinking that it’s usable.

I would never have even thought of the slang association and had honestly never heard of it and had to look it up.

For middles, you’d probably have to do something shorter like:

[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_u]Lark[/name_u]
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f]
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u]

Hopefully these help!

I like [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]! It’s not my favourite smoosh so I would use others but the “Pollyanna” / naive optimism association wouldn’t stop me from using it - this might be country/context specific.

But at least its usually an optimistic one, no?

I’d never heard of the trope until NB, but that might just be me? Beyond that, [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] is cute and sparky.

I didn’t know about the slang either. I googled it after reading the replies here. That wouldn’t keep me from using it, but all i think of is the movie, so i wouldn’t use it for that reason

[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] is gorgeous has a sweet melodic sound and just oozes such bright spunky energy. [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] feels so happy and is really delightful. I’ve never heard of the trope association so I wouldn’t worry about that to much. I love @seawillow [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] [name_u]Truth[/name_u]!

I think [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] is wonderful! It’s a GP for me. In my country (EU) it’s used pretty often as a term (in newspapers etc). It’s actually usually not positive and in the vibes of ‘Someone foolishly positive/ superficial person who doesn’t know what are the actual hardships of life’

I think the same way  I moved to another country two years ago and I have put sooo many beautiful names back to my list! I have actually never heard anybody using [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] as a term anywhere else than in my homeland :face_with_monocle: [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] is so adorable

Thank you for clarifying. In [name_u]America[/name_u] not only is it never used, but at this point many likely have never even heard of the movie. So it seems opinion definitely matters based on where you’re from. Had no idea there was a negative connotation! I just thought people were thinking of the movie character. But she was so cute! So this makes more sense now. As long as a little girl named [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] stays in USA and doesnt travel shes probably ok. Haha, jk, jk.

In Australia, the Pollyanna insult is rarely used - I see it occasionally in long form feature articles or academic pieces but very infrequently. It does have the “foolish optimism” connotation but I doubt this would be for most people. It’s a bit of a “look at clever me!” term which I’d ignore if I loved the name (In short, I think she could travel to Oz ;)).

I don’t know if it’s regional but where I am (in the south), the term is definitely known and understood. It’s not super common - people aren’t regularly going around referring to others as a [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] - but it’s definitely used often enough that I feel confident that if I were to reference the name to my friends, family, or coworkers that they would automatically understand the negative-leaning connotation.

I really love it! I love [name_f]Polly[/name_f], and I think [name_f]Anna[/name_f] is so gorgeous (yet so common), so putting them together is amazing. It’s quintessential “country bumpkin” in a way that I think is really endearing. A bit doll-ish, a bit doilie-decorating, but no less powerful or meaningful or pretty. It’s such a sunny name.

I think a spunky or shorter middle would be nice with [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]. Something like…
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u]
[name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Hope[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_u]Valor[/name_u]
[name_m]Hart[/name_m]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_m]Plenty[/name_m]

I also like the idea of [name_f]Polly[/name_f] as a first name with [name_f]Anna[/name_f] as the middle. So cute!
