WDYT of Prideaux?

I love Cornish names and I especially love feeling out new and interesting ones to see if they’re usable.

So, just looking for opinions on the name [name_f]Prideaux[/name_f]. It’s pronounced prid-OH and has a lovely meaning (meadow of waters). I think it’s an interesting alternative to [name_f]Margaux[/name_f], and otherwise kind of reminds me of [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] in terms of sound.

What are your thoughts on her…

As a first name?
As a middle name?
Nicknames?
[name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe you can imagine on a boy more?

Interested to hear what berries think!

Prideaux has got my attention before, too.
The meaning is wonderful, the spelling is gorgeous, I want to love it but I don’t like the sound enough :sob: Yes, it sounds more masculine to me. However, it just doesn’t sound name-like enough for me on a boy or a girl. It could be an interesting and meaningful middle.

Ramble about another Cornish name

Similarly, I love [name_f]Elestren[/name_f], meaning [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. Now this one I adore the sound of, PN with slight emphasis on the first syllable, EL-estren. I think it sounds so ethereal and elegant. However, I think most people find it sounds more like a medicine than a name!! I had some feedback that it reminds a [name_u]Berry[/name_u] of an estrogen supplement or something, and I can totally see that!
[name_f]Demelza[/name_f] seems less polarising, in the category of rare Cornish treasures!

Ooh [name_f]Prideaux[/name_f] is intriguing! I quite like it and that meaning is gorgeous.

I’d probably use it as a middle personally, but if you’re brave, you could use it as a first.

Prideaux nn Pria, Purdy, [name_f]Dodie[/name_f], [name_u]Poe[/name_u], Pri, [name_u]Pip[/name_u]

Prideaux is interesting! I love the meaning. I’m reminded of [name_m]Deveraux[/name_m], a boy’s name, but I still find [name_f]Prideaux[/name_f] fairly feminine, actually.

I’d prefer it as a middle. Pria, Pri, and [name_u]Pip[/name_u] are lovely nicknames!

Prideaux looks like one of those fake cajun words that LSU fans make up…

NMS,
she’s okay as a middle.

I actually have a family in a book of mine whose surname is Prideaux. That makes it hard for me to imagine it as a name in general, and therefore, I think it works better as a middle. I think it could definitely be a fun, adventurous middle though!

As for it being a first name, though, nickname options I can think of include: Pri, Prie (“pry” or “pree”), Doe, Dodie, Dodo, Pria, Priya (“pree-uh” or “pry-uh”), Ria, Riya (“ree-uh” or “rye-uh”), Meadow (if you wanted to, from the meaning). In case it would bother you, I can also see Pride or Prida becoming a nickname whether lovingly or teasingly.

Dodo is a slang term for something you’d call somebody if you felt they weren’t being smart. [name_m]Just[/name_m] saying. I wouldn’t use that as a nickname for a person I liked.

No, I do not like it.
Pridot or Prido or Pridau LOOK better, for what it’s worth

I like it. It has a lovely meaning. I would only use it as a middle though. I think it would work well with so many first names.

Prideaux is really intriguing! [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was that it reminds me of the word “pride.” I think the spelling puts me off a little bit; I like the sound more than the look. I’m not sure I love it either way, but I do think it’s got a cool appeal! I’d prefer it as a middle for any gender.

I am aware, but I think it can still be endearing as a childhood or family nickname, like [name_f]Deedee[/name_f].
