WDYT of Rune?

There are so many names that used to be considered masculine, but are now used acceptably for girls. There are also plenty of names that are unisex. [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], [name_u]Casey[/name_u], [name_u]Leslie[/name_u], [name_u]Dana[/name_u], [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_u]Carey[/name_u], [name_u]Morgan[/name_u], [name_u]Jordan[/name_u], [name_u]Kim[/name_u], [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], [name_u]Chris[/name_u]…

You don’t know me. I am neither obnoxious nor culturally disrespectful. To assume that because of this situation is ridiculous. It’s people who stereotype Americans based on what some of them do who are disrespectful. This confirms EVERYTHING the rest of the world finds obnoxious about Americans? Really?

Why do you assume I’m stealing the name from another culture? You don’t know what culture I associate with. The United States is a diverse, multi-cultural place, aka “melting pot.” We are not made up of just one culture that is stealing names from overseas.

And how is taking names from other cultures wrong, anyway? That’s like saying I’m not allowed to learn [name_m]French[/name_m] because I’m not from [name_f]France[/name_f]. Or I’m not allowed to eat gyros because I’m not Greek. It’s ridiculous. I think we can all agree that respecting others’ cultures is important. What I don’t agree with is that naming my child from outside of my Scandinavian heritage is somehow against the rules.

I fully realize [name_u]America[/name_u] is a melting pot of cultures. However, based on the language of your post, it’s pretty easy to tell you’re not Scandinavian.

Please read all of what I said. I specifically said that it it wrong to take a name from another culture AND SWITCH THE GENDER. It’s not the same as using a [name_m]French[/name_m] name without being [name_m]French[/name_m]. It’s perfectly fine to use the Scandinavian [name_m]Rune[/name_m] on a boy. It’d also be fine to use [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_m]Gaetan[/name_m] on a boy, but not a girl. If you want to name a girl [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m], or any other more “American” name, people here would have a problem with it regardless of the name’s country of origin.

Actually, it does confirm a lot of what people from around the world think about Americans. Using a name that is popular in one country and then using it in [name_u]America[/name_u] WHILE SWITCHING THE GENDER is disrespectful to the original country (and their culture). It’s not disrespectful for them to stereotype Americans based on our actions. A lot of what we do as a country is ignorant, obnoxious, and arrogant.

I guess you’ll just have to ask my (and my husband’s) grandparents whether or not I’m Scandinavian. They emigrated from Denmark and Norway. Not sure how you could tell any of that from my posts, though.

That is a completely ridiculous and out-of-touch point of view. Using this “logic,” every Iraqi, Afganistani, or Muslim would be considered a terrorist because of actions of a small percentage of their people’s actions.

As for the name thing, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. And based on your reasoning of the above, that’s perfectly fine with me.

You posted asking for opinions on the name. You say you’re Scandinavian, you should be aware that it’s a boys name and not pronounced roon. If you can’t handle negative opinions, if all you wanted was people telling you how much they loved it, then I’m afraid you’ll never get what you want.

The fact is, it’s a boys name, you’re putting it on a girl. A lot of people won’t like that and not just here. It’s not even a pretty boys name that I could see why you like it on a girl. You’re going to have to deal with people not liking it in real life. If you can’t deal with it, then maybe you should choose a name you can take criticism over.

I’m closing this thread because all you’re doing is causing arguments and being rude towards people whose opinion you asked for.
