I’ve found a fondness for the name [name]Sawyer[/name] and I’ve added it to my list. What do you think of the name? Apparently the gay couple on the TV show The [name]New[/name] Normal have used the name for their son, [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Collins[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think that will effect the names usage or popularity? I’ve also read a bit about folks using it for a girl’s name and that concept being on the rise. I’ve never considered it a girl’s name. But, our son’s middle is planned to be [name]Everett[/name] and I don’t want a double uni-sex name (I know of a little girl with the name [name]Finley[/name] [name]Everett[/name]).
PS - [name]How[/name] do YOU pronounce it? SAW-yer or SOY-yer?
I don’t think so; not all names used on TV become megahits. I honestly like it better on a girl; I can’t help but see that young 5 year old girl with her hair in a messy ponytail and a splash of freckles on her face in her father’s boat, looking out of a toy telescope. No image for a boy comes up, just the character of [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name].
I never really thought of it before, but I guess I say SOY-yer? I cant imagine the [name]New[/name] Normal would have that big of an impact…not nearly as big as LOST did some years ago. But I love love love it, and think it is adorable for a little boy.
I love it. I agree with the pp’s–every name used on TV doesn’t become a megahit. And if LOST didn’t make [name]Sawyer[/name] crazy popular, I don’t really think it’s really going to. I say it more like SOY-yer. I’ve actually been thinking about it quite a bit lately, I adore it.
I wouldn’t worry about it for girls. It ranks MUCH lower for girls than it does for boys, and it’s one of those names that seems like it’s puttering out for girls (not a popular girls’ choice by any means–and it doesn’t show signs of taking the naming world by storm like [name]Avery[/name] did). Plus, [name]Everett[/name] doesn’t rank for girls, period. I think [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Everett[/name] would be such a handsome combo. Although I’m probably biased–I seriously considered [name]Everett[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name] for my [name]Everett[/name] combo.
Interesting - DH and I both pronounce it SAW-yer. I did a quick survey at work the other day and it was probably 70/30 in favor of SAW-yer. I live in the deep south US - could it be a regional thing? I also usually say [name]LAW[/name]-yer instead of [name]LOY[/name]-yer. I believe I’ve used both.
I think it’s a great choice. [name]Sawyer[/name] feels rugged, outdoorsy, mischievous, and masculine to me - definitely not a girly name. I would never think that [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Everett[/name] (or [name]Finley[/name] [name]Everett[/name], for that matter) was a girl.
If LOST didn’t shoot [name]Sawyer[/name] up the charts, then I highly doubt that a baby on a sitcom will. I’d never even heard of The [name]New[/name] Normal until people on Nameberry started mentioning it.
I pronounce it “soy-yer.” I’m also in the deep South, and the Sawyers I know pronounce it “saw-yer.” Personally I prefer the “soy-yer” pronunciation.
I love [name]Sawyer[/name]. I think of it as handsome and rugged. Maybe it’s the connection from the character on “Lost”. Anyway, I like it. I would pronounce it as SOY-yer.
I love it and it is one of our top 2 right now. I have no female associations and pronounce it SAW-yer. I’m surprised by how many say SOY-yer. [name]One[/name] thing holding me back from it is the different pronunciation. I live in the Midwest and I think most say SAW-yer but you never know where life may take ds.
My son was still born at 38 weeks and his name was sawyer [name]Everett[/name] I feel [name]Everett[/name] and sawyer [name]Both[/name] are strongly masculine names
I pronounce it SAW-yer. I’m indifferent to the name. I do know two friends that have used it in the last 2 years, it’s definitely growing in popular. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t use it if that bothers you. It would me!
