Honestly, I don’t find it easy to say. When I see it I pronounce it like uh-mar-al-eh-sis…it sounds like paralysis to me, even though I’m incorrect.

I understand that people like flower names because flowers are pretty, but they’re not for me

I like [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]. It’s too “out there” to use as a first name, but I have it as a middle for [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] on my list. I have a friend named [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], and she goes by [name_m]Ary[/name_m].

I love [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]. I’d use it if I found a husband who liked unusual names, but maybe not on my own. I do think it sounds beautiful, and I have it as a middle idea for [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f] ([name_f]Dulcie[/name_f] [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]). [name_f]Mary[/name_f] would make a nice nn for it, or [name_f]Amy[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]! It doesn’t really fit in my family, but with the right sibset I’d use it.

I like the nn’s [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], and Lissy

I meant to vote for ‘I love it’, but my hand must have slipped, as it’s telling me I voted for ‘I like it’. So count one less for ‘I like it’ and one more for ‘I love it’!!

I love it! It’s in my top 10 for sure!

Hahaha, thanks, MaggieMary!

To earlier poster: I haven’t run this name by my husband yet, as I’m not pregnant and he thinks I’m weird enough because I am so into names. LOL.

I have a sixteen-month-old daughter named [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]. We call her both [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (Loo-SEE-ah) and [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] sound pretty good together, though [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] is a bit more classic, and a bit (a lot?) more international.

Oh, and for nicknames I like [name_f]Lissa[/name_f]/[name_f]Lissie[/name_f] or [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]… open to other suggestions. I don’t like “[name_f]Mary[/name_f]” “[name_f]Mara[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Amy[/name_f]” as nicknames because those are also stand-alone names, and I don’t want people to think those are the actual name, if that makes sense. (Although these days [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is being used as a name in its own right… it was originally a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]).

@lanev - [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] has been a name in it’s own right for years in the UK. It’s actually short for [name_f]Mairead[/name_f], which is a Scottish form of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. It’s a bit like [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - quite silly as a nn now because it’s established as a proper name, but it still works. However, if you dislike [name_f]Amy[/name_f] & [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as nicknames, [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] would be another I would avoid.

I don’t think [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is silly as a nickname–that’s how it was originally used, and I’m a bit traditional so I would only use it as a nickname. I think [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] sounds silly as a name, but OK as a nickname (wouldn’t use it myself, though). [name_f]Mary[/name_f] & [name_f]Amy[/name_f] are too boring for me. But [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] has spirit.

It’s not a name I would use, but I think it has a very pretty sound. And yes, I think it’s easy to pronounce since most people know the flower.

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] is lovely! I knew a girl named [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] - she went by [name_f]Amy[/name_f]

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it, but don’t think I would be brave enough to use it.

I’m not sure if I’m brave enough either! Testing the waters here.

It’s okay, not overly fond of it myself. I love the meaning and would like using the nn [name_f]Amy[/name_f] but otherwise it just doesn’t appeal to me.

It’s such a wonderful name! Very beautiful & romantic.

If I ever have a little girl named [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], I would call her [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as a nn.

While the more I say this name, the more I like it, the “y” in the middle of it bothers me when I look at it written down. Not sure why. But the name is strange enough already that I don’t want to mess with the spelling…

I went to highschool with a girl named [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], we all called her [name_f]Amie[/name_f] (ah-me). Cute name!

I flip-flop constantly over [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]. Why? Well, I can only imagine calling out “[name_f]AMA[/name_f]-R-R-RYLLLISSS!” would become tedious. Something about the name makes me think of a shrill voice calling it out with displeasure to be met with a beribboned, fussy little girl in a froth of lace and bows. (I know it’s such an unhappy image!) So I can’t really… love it per se.
