We were in the car on the way to visit my mom today and listening to the radio. A song I’ve heard a few dozen times now, Titanium by [name]David[/name] Guetta and featuring a female Australian DJ/singer named Sia. My husband’s ears perked up instantly and he started going on about how he loved the name Sia (pronounced Sigh-a) I looked it up and it’s definitely growing on me. Problem is, I’m finding multiple meanings and origins. Some sites say it means “Helper” and is Hebrew and others say it means “glowing, bright” in Arabic. I also found a site saying it’s meaning is “Cool.” So, I need help finding the true origin/meaning and story behind this name. And also, do you like it? I prefer it on a boy, but it could definitely work for a girl too.
Well, I just learned something - I’ve always thought it was pronounced to rhyme with [name]Pia[/name]! (Must admit, I’m a bit disappointed…)
I’m not a huge fan now that I know it’s Sigh-a, and definitely not on a boy - it looks very girly to me, along the lines of [name]Pia[/name] and [name]Mia[/name].
Well, again…I don’t really know the history behind it so I’m not 100% sure that’s how it is pronounced. The radio DJ said it Sigh-a, and I’ve also heard a few other random people on TV say it that way. So I’m just assuming. Funny actually, I like it pronounced Sigh-a but if I found out it was pronounced like See-a I would hate it. Haha.
I’ve only heard DJs say See-a, and I’m in Australia. I did a bit of googling out of curiosity, and it seems that Sia Furler does pronounce her name See-a. Sigh-a could well be another pn of the same name though, so can’t see why you couldn’t use the name and just push the pn you wanted!

I love the name too! But pronounced as see-ah. I think if you were to use it on a boy go for the sigh-a pronunciation but a different spelling-somethinkg more masculine! I think Sia is just as cute as names like [name]Mia[/name] and [name]Gia[/name], and if you were to use it for a girl have the see-ah pronunciation. I would pronounce Sia like see-uh. I’m 99% sure that’s how the artist pronounces it. I saw a movie once and I’m pretty sure the main character’s name was Saia or Saiah. I’m pretty sure it was Japanese. But it was pronounced Sigh-uh and in the movie, the character said it meant “sand that can not be held”. I could be wrong about the name though. It was years ago that I saw it and I can’t even remember the name of the movie itself.
Sia is one of my favourite musicians, her name is pronounced See-ah, like [name]Pia[/name] and [name]Mia[/name] with a s.
I think Sia, like many other names, has several origins,so I’m sure what you’ve found is right. And I think it’s a lovely name for a girl, not so much for a boy.
As the others have said I’ve only ever heard it pronounced as Sia.
Sia is as feminine as Mia, if not more so, so I would never even consider its use on a boy. But don’t worry, it’s mostly spelling - Seeya sounds resolutely girly whilst Sigha seems a little more unisex. So if it was spelt Syre or Sigher or something of the sort it’d definitely be more valid as a male name.
Have you considered Cy or Sayer?
My opinion: I really really like the name. In fact it was a top 5 name for me a few years back, along with Adele and Florence (funny that they’re all successful musicians now), especially because I thought of it as a secret find. But I prefer Sia on a girl, and pronounced Seeya.
I agree. I’m not keen on the pronunciation Sigh-a over see-uh. Hate that song though.
