WDYT of Virgil?

Hey Berries,

Like the title says what do you think of the name [name_m]Virgil[/name_m]? My fiance really loves it and I use to not like it (I thought it was horribly dated for the most part) . However, recently I’m starting to come around to it more and more. My main question is if [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] would be considered wearable for a little boy now? I grew up with a common name (in fact, it was the #1 most popular name for girls in my birth year) so I know how it feels to be one of several in the classroom and workplace. The SSA has [name_m]Virgil[/name_m]'s run in the top 1,000 ending in 1991 and it has yet to resurface. I also doubt it will be making a comeback any time soon which is appealing to me.

My other question is what would make a good middle name for [name_m]Virgil[/name_m]? Our last name is a one-syllable “B” name so I’m thinking in order for a nice flow the mn would have to be two to three syllables?
Some combos I like are–

[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] ([name_u]James[/name_u] after my grandfather who pretty much raised me as the daughter he never had. Also I figured he’d have [name_u]James[/name_u] to fall back on if he didn’t care that much for his first).

[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Uriah[/name_m] (too biblical? I’ve always liked the sound of [name_m]Uriah[/name_m] and I figured it’s not as popular as other Bible names)

Thanks in advance! I look forward to the suggestions.

I like it. I am really into names that are less common but still what I consider “real” names and not made up words. I see it having advantages, like not having to add you last initial to all of your school work and no obvious nicknames. Depends on your stand on nicknames because surely he would end up with one but it wouldn’t be as obvious as just a shortening of his name. Example: my name is [name_m]Farren[/name_m] but you can’t really shorten that to anything so my childhood nickname was Mudge. Theres a story behind it but only my family ever used the nickname. About 8 years ago one of the kids I babysat struggled with my name and ended up calling me Farie (fairy) which kind of stuck and I always wondered why no one thought of that sooner. lol
Anyway the point is I really like the name [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] and i think [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] sounds great together.

I love the thought of meeting a little [name_m]Virgil[/name_m]! I also think giving him a more common middle would be a nice balance for the future if he wants something to choose between. [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is nice and I like the significance.

Others:
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] (alternate)
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m]

I like the sound of [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Uriah[/name_m]. I actually love it. I do think that it may be a tad too much for a child to wear. But I don’t know your child / you so I am not one to judge!!

Good luck! And great name!

I like [name_m]Virgil[/name_m]! [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is a lovely combo.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about

[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]

I’m digging [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] ([name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is another name we both like, but I had reservations about using it as a first name due to popularity). I’m also crushing on [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] now that you all brought it to my attention.

I should mention that my uncle has a son whose middle name is [name_u]James[/name_u]. I mean it would make sense for him to want to honor his father seeing that this is first and only son (they have four children and I highly doubt they’ll have any more). Would it be strange to give my own son in the future the same middle name? I had wanted to honor my grandfather for so long and I figured I would be the first one to do so. One of my uncles decided to not have children and then my other uncle kept having daughters. When I found out my aunt was having twins-a boy and a girl I knew he would use [name_u]James[/name_u] somehow.
Would it be weird or tacky for both of them to have the middle name [name_u]James[/name_u]? [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] will probably be around ten before we even start planning for a family.

This is so funny, I named my firstborn [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] in 2013. I was just searching around now to see that it has gone from the 400s to 118. I doubt it will ever achieve mega popularity, but I bet a lot of people are using it now to honor grandparents, as I did. [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] is a great name that needs to be preserved, some people look at me like I’m crazy but most people think it’s awesome. It really suits my son through and through, he is a [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] if there ever was one. I’m lucky that my husband loves the name too!
