My husband wants to name our new boy [name]Thaddeus[/name]. I don’t mind the name so much, but I really don’t like the inevitable nick names of [name]Thad[/name], [name]Tad[/name], and even [name]Taddeo[/name].
I want to name the new baby [name]Finn[/name]. my hub doesn’t thinks this works in French (we currently live in French speaking country and half his family speaks French). It would probably be pronounced “Feen”. I don’t want to give it up because of this. People can learn to say it! and the majority of our family is Irish and American.
Does [name]Thaddeus[/name] work that much better? Would it be difficult for [name]Finn[/name] growing up here?
I think [name]Finn[/name] goes well with [name]Kali[/name] and [name]Felix[/name], our other children.
Surname is [name]Kelly[/name].
[name]How[/name] about [name]Phineas[/name] as an alternative? There are no pronunciation rules on nn’s right? ‘His name is [name]Phineas[/name], but we call him [name]Finn[/name]…’
Or something after [name]Finn[/name] may stress that it is pronounced in English? I like [name]Finbar[/name]. Or [name]Finlay[/name] or [name]Finnian[/name]. The recognition that it is an English name should make the French pronounce it the English way. (I live in a French speaking area myself).
Oh, and I have Dutch friends who called their son Pepijn, also in a French speaking area. And even he is growing up just fine!

I think [name]Finn[/name] sounds better with your last name. However, I love the suggestion of [name]Phineas[/name]. It’s got the long, full of vowels sound that [name]Thaddeus[/name] has, but provides you with the nickname [name]Finn[/name]. I think it goes well with your other child and with your last name.

I [name]DO[/name] think French-speakers are likely to mispronounce it-- but I also think it’s likely that theyw ould mispronounce [name]Thaddeus[/name]-- the short i and a sounds in both those names just aren’t the way they’re used to saying them-- and I don’t think people would necessarily “learn” to pronounce it the way you want. That said, I don’t think “Feen” is a horrible thing-- I certainly like it better than “[name]Todd[/name]”- which is how the other could pan out.
I like [name]Finn[/name] soooooo much better. Like you, I despise [name]Thad[/name]. If you could use [name]Theo[/name] or [name]Teddy[/name], I wouldn’t mind [name]Thaddeus[/name].

I prefer [name]Thaddeus[/name], mostly because [name]Finn[/name] seems like a candidate to become uber-popular because of the show “Glee” - but you probably don’t have that problem in [name]France[/name]! To me, [name]Thaddeus[/name] is less-common but not “weird” - I think it sounds nice with the surname [name]Kelly[/name], as well. But both names would work nicely with that surname. Good luck!
