We found a girls name we love, and then my husband pointed out

My husband and I have been bouncing around ideas for names and found agreeing on girls names is very difficult for us- and then we found [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. We absolutely adore it and I thought we had settled on [name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] being our top name for our first girl. Today he pointed out that his cousin (my best friend) and her fiance have a dog named Stiletto. We go over to their house at least twice a week and go on vacations with them and their dog regularly, so its safe to say any children of ours will be around Stiletto a lot. Is [name_f]Stella[/name_f] too close to Stiletto??? Should we take [name_f]Stella[/name_f] off our list? If so, any suggestions that are similar to [name_f]Stella[/name_f]? Middle name is an honor name and must be a variation of [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and [name_f]Anne[/name_f], last name is Ling.

I don’t think it’s too close at all. Sure, [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and Stiletto share some sounds, but they are still very distinguishable from each other. Plus, I know it’s morbid, but the dog has a relatively short lifespan, while your daughter would carry the name with her throughout her life. I think you should definitely keep it!

It would not be a dealbreaker to me. The names are similar but not the same and one is a dog and one is a human.

I’d still use it. I don’t think they are that similar

This is a nonissue.

I say keep [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. It’s a non issue.

I don’t think it’s an issue. I’d use [name_f]Stella[/name_f] regardless

I would still use it

I agree, use it. Enjoy!

I don’t think it’s an issue but if it really bothers you what about using [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] or [name_f]Estella[/name_f] with nn [name_f]Stella[/name_f]?

I wouldn’t worry about it…Go with [name_f]Stella[/name_f]

If I were you my concern would be that [name_f]Stella[/name_f] Ling doesn’t work well together! Sorry!

I don’t think it will be a problem but if you feel that they will clash some other suggestions are

  • [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ellia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Elle[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Soleil[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Willa[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Luna[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]

I think it depends on your relationship with your friends, and how much it might bother you down the road. Ultimately, your daughter will have this name all her life, and the connection with the dog will be just as long as the dog (plus the friendship) is around.

It’s your call, but [name_f]Stella[/name_f] is a very fine name.

I’d still use it, but I understand the dilemma. I’ve been debating on whether or not [name_u]Penny[/name_u] as a nickname is usable because it is the name of my sister in laws dog. In the end, I think I will use it anyway.

FWIW, I have been around my husband’s family for nearly a decade. His aunt just got a dog two months ago and named it [name_f]Jenny[/name_f]. My name is [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f].

Stiletto and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] are not candidates for confusion [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

A few things:

  1. Stilleto and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] sound slightly the same, but not enough to rule it out for your child. If it was [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Stella[/name_f], then yeah, I’d say it’s too close.

  2. As much as you claim to see this dog, it’s not your dog. This will, however, be your child, so I think you should name it however you please.

  3. This may be morbid, but the dog will not be around forever. There is a very high probability that your child will outlive this cousin’s dog and it will be more of a nonissue then.

not an issue, I would still use it.

Thank you for the input!
