We love the name Luna but…

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!

We have a beautiful girl that’s 10 days old now, and we’ve been calling her [name_f]Luna[/name_f] since birth and months before. We both love the name, and have been calling her [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] as a NN.

However… my wife is Vietnamese, and we want our daughter to be bilingual, and the problem I’m now only thinking is that ‘like’ in Vietnamese is ‘thích’ (essentially pronounced ‘tick’), and it’s not uncommon to shorten something to ‘name thích?‘ or ‘name thích không?’ to ask your if a person likes something…

So therefore it’s recently occurred to me it will be completely plausible for many to say ‘Luna thích?’ which I’m really struggling with. Particularly as her primarily language will be [name_f]English[/name_f], so she’ll be well aware of this connection.

Should we completely ditch the name and find something new? [name_f]My[/name_f] wife thinks it won’t be much of an issue, but I’m a bit concerned. Then again, friends and family are already calling her [name_f]Luna[/name_f].

Any thoughts (and suggestions!) would be much appreciated!

I think it’s fine! If someone is asking her if she likes something, it’s going to have a completely different association - plus, maybe if they’re shortening, they might go with [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] ‘thích instead of [name_f]Luna[/name_f]?

I don’t think it is an issue that will happen often! I think it’s just one of those names that if you love you will have to see past

I don’t think it’s a problem, and that situation is unlikely to arise.

I understand your immediate worry, but I don’t think it’ll be a big deal! Especially in the long run. Keep her name—it’s clear you love it!

I honestly think that this being common could be a problem. I would probably consider using [name_f]Luna[/name_f] as a middle. In my experience it is quite possible to go by your middle if you want. Then you could find a first that works better in both Vietnamese and [name_f]English[/name_f]. There’s of course also the possibility of finding something new.

Maybe a name that lends itself to the nn [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]:
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] / [name_u]Louise[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] / [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
I don’t usually recommend names that are similar sounding but maybe something like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f] because then both have the nn [name_f]Lulu[/name_f].
