We need your advice on our short list (of 14 names). Help!!

DH and I cannot agree on a boys name. While he trends very traditional, I would love something that isn’t quite as common (but not too out-there either). Our other kids are [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m]
Here’s the short list, as it stands…

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m](my fave, which he hates)
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] (his fave, and I don’t mind it, but so so common around us)
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] (I’m worried that [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m] sound like [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and leia from [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars, and I’d prefer not to repeat initials of possible)
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] (but does it rhyme too much with [name_m]Liam[/name_m]?)
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] ([name_m]Gabe[/name_m])
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_m]Robert[/name_m] (DH likes, I’m just *meh)
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] (is it too different from our sibset)
[name_u]Drew[/name_u] (my half brother has a 25 year old son named drew)
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] (too common?)
[name_m]Davis[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m] (DH doesn’t like)
[name_m]Iain[/name_m] (DH likes this, pronounced like ee-an)

Please be brutally honest. And feel free to make another suggestion if you’ve got one

I love a lot of your options.

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] - I think it’s great, but I guess it’s out if your husband hates it
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] - love, but it is getting pretty popular; if [name_m]Liam[/name_m]'s popularity bothers you, then [name_m]Henry[/name_m]'s probably would too
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] - I really like it and don’t think of [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_f]Leia[/name_f]. I personally don’t think same first initial is a big deal, but I think it just comes down to whether you really want to avoid it or if you are okay with it
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] - it does sound like [name_m]Liam[/name_m] at the end, so this wouldn’t be my first choice; that being said, I definitely think it’s still usable because its sound is distinct enough from [name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] - love this and love [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]. I think it goes great with your sibset. It’s fairly popular, but I don’t really feel like I hear it that often in my area
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - I like it and think it would be a good choice
[name_m]Robert[/name_m] - nice name but I do think it’s a little “meh” with the siblings. It doesn’t have a lot of personality in my opinion. It doesn’t sound like you’re in love with it either, so I would nix this one.
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] - love and love with the sibset. Sounds distinct from siblings and is familiar without being crazy popular; however, with [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] being so popular and [name_m]Eli[/name_m] also being popular, I think the nickname [name_m]Eli[/name_m] is pretty popular so that’s something to think about
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] - I like it and I do not think it’s too different from your sibset
[name_u]Drew[/name_u] - I like it and think it goes well with the sibs; I think it just depends on whether it bothers you or your brother to both have sons named [name_u]Drew[/name_u]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] - very popular, so I would maybe nix; that being said, I think it’s a good name
[name_m]Davis[/name_m] - honestly, I’ve just never been a fan of [name_m]Davis[/name_m]; objectively, however, there is nothing wrong with it and it goes well with [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m] - really, really love with [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], but I think it’s probably best to nix it if you and DH can’t agree on it
[name_m]Iain[/name_m] - I like [name_m]Ian[/name_m], but only spelled with the second “i.” With the [name_m]Iain[/name_m] spelling, he will forever be correcting people on the spelling of his name and it would be an unnecessary pain.

Overall, my picks for you are [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], and [name_u]Hunter[/name_u]. I love [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_m]Declan[/name_m], it’s a shame your DH doesn’t like them. I love [name_u]Elias[/name_u] too, but [name_m]Eli[/name_m] has definitely skyrocketed in popularity. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] nicknamed [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] is probably my top pick. Good luck, you’ve got a great list!

I think you should knock off anything that one of you dislikes ([name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_m]Declan[/name_m], [name_m]Robert[/name_m]). What middles are you planning on going with? In your last post you said [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Robert[/name_m], but now it seems that they are up for first names.

[name_m]Henry[/name_m]: Common, but it’s a handsome classic.
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]: I don’t really think of the [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars connection; [name_m]Liam[/name_m] isn’t close enough to [name_f]Leah[/name_f] for me to get that vibe. However, if you don’t want matching initials you may want to put this further down the list.
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]: It doesn’t rhyme with [name_m]Liam[/name_m] to me because the stress is on the beginning of the name for both of them. You may also like [name_m]Abram[/name_m] or [name_m]Abner[/name_m].
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] ([name_m]Gabe[/name_m]): [name_u]Love[/name_u]!
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]: Nothing wrong with it, I’m just not a fan.
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]: Handsome!
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u]: Yes, it’s different, but the important thing is that you love all of your kids names.
[name_u]Drew[/name_u]: [name_m]How[/name_m] would you feel with cousins sharing the same name? There’s a big age difference, so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]: Assuming you are in the US, it’s rank 12 if you account for popularity due to spelling variations. However, [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] and [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] are up there on the charts too.
[name_m]Davis[/name_m]: okay, I don’t have strong feelings either way. [name_m]Morris[/name_m] is another similar option.
[name_m]Iain[/name_m]: Handsome, but I keep going back and forth over whether it feels too close to [name_m]Liam[/name_m] or not.

I adore [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m].

with [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m] I like:

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] - I do not think of [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_f]Leia[/name_f] when I hear [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]
[name_u]Drew[/name_u]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m]
[name_m]Iain[/name_m]

my personal favorites:

[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m]
[name_m]Iain[/name_m]

Yes, [name_m]Robert[/name_m] will likely be the middle name (unless it’s the first name, in which case [name_m]Henry[/name_m] will be the middle)

[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] sounds really nice.
[name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_m]Declan[/name_m] and [name_m]Iain[/name_m] also sound great with [name_m]Robert[/name_m] as a middle name.

[name_m]Henry[/name_m]: My personal preference would be [name_m]Henrik[/name_m]. [name_m]Henry[/name_m] just isn’t my style.
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]: [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars will make this name jump up the charts a bit but it’s not an issue with [name_m]Liam[/name_m]. It is a little strange both having 4 letters sharing first initial. I’d scratch it.
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]: This is reusing half of [name_m]Liam[/name_m]'s name, but it doesn’t sound as similar as some of your other picks.
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] ([name_m]Gabe[/name_m]): cool, I would love to meet a little [name_m]Gabe[/name_m].
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]: I like this.
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]: [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t mind this.
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u]: I’m not into the trendy violent sounding boys names right now.
[name_u]Drew[/name_u]: I personally just don’t care for this one.
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]: I think aloud it sounds too much like [name_m]Liam[/name_m].
[name_m]Davis[/name_m]: Interesting! A little different stylistically.
[name_m]Iain[/name_m]: too much like [name_m]Liam[/name_m].

I skipped over the ones daddy doesn’t like, cause why bother.

My fave combos would be Gabriel Robert & Elias Robert

I like [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] best!

Compromises?
What does your husband think of [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]?
What do you think of [name_u]Henley[/name_u] instead of [name_m]Henry[/name_m]?

Other suggestions:
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_m]Beckham[/name_m]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_u]Bentley[/name_u]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_m]Holden[/name_m]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_m]Leyton[/name_m]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_m]Anders[/name_m]

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] - ok, but not if he hates it.
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] - too popular
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] - popular
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] - does rhyme with [name_m]Liam[/name_m] a bit.
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] ([name_m]Gabe[/name_m]) - too popular
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - I love it
[name_m]Robert[/name_m] - not bad, but I see what you mean
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] - decent name
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] - can’t stand this name. Makes me think of a killer.
[name_u]Drew[/name_u] - not my style
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] - too common
[name_m]Davis[/name_m]- will get nn [name_m]Dave[/name_m] which is common from [name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m] - I like it
Iian - I would spell is Ian, personally.

Suggestions-

[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_u]Dallas[/name_u]
[name_u]Dustin[/name_u]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Pierce[/name_m]
[name_m]Ramsey[/name_m]
[name_u]Tobin[/name_u] ([name_u]Toby[/name_u])
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]

[name_u]Elias[/name_u] is my favorite.
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] would be my second choice.

My favourite is [name_m]Davis[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m].

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] - [name_m]Cross[/name_m] it off immediately. If your husband hates it, it shouldn’t be on the short list. I know it’s hard when you love a name, but you’re just torturing yourself.
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] - I don’t particularly like it, but it’s all right. If you agree ‘the most’ on this one, don’t worry about popularity. However, you don’t sound particularly keen on it, so don’t choose it if you don’t really like it.
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] - I don’t think it sounds like [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_f]Leia[/name_f] at all, because [name_f]Leia[/name_f] is lay-a, not lee-ah. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is a lovely name, I like it a lot.
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] - This is a great choice for ‘classic but not actually that popular’. Doesn’t rhyme with [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and the m ending wouldn’t personally bother me, but that’s up to you to decide.
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] ([name_m]Gabe[/name_m]) - I think it’s OK.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - Very nice name.
[name_m]Robert[/name_m] - If you’re just ‘meh’ then it’s not the name for you. Unless for a middle name as you mentioned - I personally love [name_m]Robert[/name_m], but that’s neither here nor there.
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Elias[/name_u], and I think it actually fits quite nicely.
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] - Yeah it’s pretty stylistically different in my opinion.
[name_u]Drew[/name_u] - It’s all right, but why repeat a name if you don’t have to? Unless it’s ‘the one’ and you love it to bits, just cross it off.
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] - Not too common, nice name and sounds good with your other kids.
[name_m]Davis[/name_m] - I don’t like it, but more to the point I don’t think it goes with your other kids. Not that that really matters if you love it, but if you’re trying to trim the list down, I would cross it off.
[name_m]Declan[/name_m] - [name_m]Cross[/name_m] it off if he doesn’t like it.
[name_m]Iain[/name_m] - Now this really is rhymey with [name_m]Liam[/name_m]. I would cross it off.

I’d probably go for [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] or [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] if it were me.

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] doesn’t go
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] popular for a reason, but not my fave.
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] agree, too close to [name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] does rhyme too much
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] fine
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] okay, like.this name, buy not so much with [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_u]Love[/name_u] this. My favorite choice. Effortless and classic.
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] too similar to [name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] doesn’t go
[name_u]Drew[/name_u] I like this
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] not partial to this
[name_m]Davis[/name_m] - Another solid choice
[name_m]Declan[/name_m] would be fine
[name_m]Iain[/name_m] too close to [name_m]Liam[/name_m]

[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]

The best choices (based on your criteria/preferences/parameters) would be

[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]

I also wanted to mention. In our town (in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]). [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] isn’t common at all. For what it’s worth, I think it fits perfectly with your other kids’ names. You just need to decide if it’s too popular where you are.

I like both [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]…
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]
Or
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]

I also like [name_m]Declan[/name_m]…

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m](my fave, which he hates) - this is my favourite of all the options, but I think you need to let go if it isn’t going to happen. You can keep it for a pet
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] (his fave, and I don’t mind it, but so so common around us) - sorry I find this really boring
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] (I’m worried that [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m] sound like [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and leia from [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars, and I’d prefer not to repeat initials of possible) - also boring. [name_u]Luca[/name_u] would be better.
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] (but does it rhyme too much with [name_m]Liam[/name_m]?) - Definitely too rhymy.
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] ([name_m]Gabe[/name_m]) - this is OK.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - This is OK
[name_m]Robert[/name_m] (DH likes, I’m just *meh) - really dislike.
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] - dislike
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] (is it too different from our sibset) - One of my most hated names, sorry.
[name_u]Drew[/name_u] (my half brother has a 25 year old son named drew) - nope.
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] (too common?) - nope
[name_m]Davis[/name_m] - nope
[name_m]Declan[/name_m] (DH doesn’t like) - Quite like
[name_m]Iain[/name_m] (DH likes this, pronounced like ee-an) - I like this, but aloud it’s v similar to [name_m]Liam[/name_m].

Other suggestions:
[name_u]Evan[/name_u] - similar to [name_m]Iain[/name_m], [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], but a little less used, whilst still being familiar.
[name_u]Owen[/name_u] - very similar to [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] but feels far more traditional and elegant (imo) and “in line” with [name_m]Liam[/name_m].
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] - kind of captures the feel of [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] and [name_u]Elias[/name_u]. Plus then your kids have initials all in a row in the alphabet… (LMN)
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] - similar to [name_m]Declan[/name_m], but maybe your partner will like this more.
[name_m]Gordon[/name_m]
[name_m]Duncan[/name_m] - again captures that Celtic feel of [name_m]Declan[/name_m], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] etc.
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] / [name_u]Theo[/name_u]
[name_u]Robin[/name_u] - to me [name_m]Liam[/name_m] is a really lovely soft boys name. [name_u]Robin[/name_u] is a name that gives me a similar feel.

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] --So obviously this is out if your husband hates it. Maybe you both might consider [name_u]Finn[/name_u] (or [name_m]Finnian[/name_m])?
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] – I wouldn’t let popularity disqualify it if you both like, but you sound only lukewarm on this one
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] – I don’t think of [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_f]Leia[/name_f] at all, but if you want to avoid repeating initials, then go ahead and eliminate it.
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] --I wouldn’t say it rhymes TOO much with [name_m]Liam[/name_m], but if you have other choices, maybe better to go with one of them
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] ([name_m]Gabe[/name_m]) --this seems great all around, and matches well with your other kids’ names
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] --same as above, I like this choice a lot
[name_m]Robert[/name_m] --Only “meh” for you, so I’d take it out
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] --I like it, goes well with your sibset, too. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think you’d call him [name_m]Eli[/name_m]? That does sound a little similar to [name_m]Liam[/name_m], but probably not too much.
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] --not my favorite from your list, but I think it could work just fine with your other kids’ names
[name_u]Drew[/name_u] --unless you and your husband are in love with this one, I’d cross it out since it’s already used in your family
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] --great name, goes well with your other kids. I guess popularity varies depending on where you live, but I don’t think it’s too common
[name_m]Davis[/name_m] --not my favorite, but no objections if you both like it
[name_m]Declan[/name_m] --out since your husband doesn’t like it. Maybe you could run [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] or [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] by him if you like those as alternatives.
[name_m]Iain[/name_m] (DH likes this, pronounced like ee-an) --I like it, but it is kind of similar to [name_m]Liam[/name_m]

I think my picks would be [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], and [name_m]Ethan[/name_m].
