Weeks away. Undecided. The burden of choice is building up.

Hello Berries,

I’ve got this dilemma, been going through lots of option for names but we still can’t decide. We’ve had the shortlisted names we will consider but because of the oriental element and my surname, it kinda makes it a little complex to name my new baby boy.

First son’s name is [name_m]Jethro[/name_m] [name_m]Ming[/name_m]-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak.

  • Mak being the surname
  • [name_m]Ming[/name_m]-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] being his oriental name
  • We’re trying to stick to this in the names.

[name_m]NEW[/name_m] [name_u]BABY[/name_u]

First name shortlisted by preference but not limited to:

  • [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]
  • [name_m]Callum[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] or [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]?
  • [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
  • Ryko
  • [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] - Is this a girl’s name? I notice a lot of girls having these names especially in [name_f]Asia[/name_f]. I wanted to pair it up with [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] [name_m]Frey[/name_m] Mak, meaning Sea Fortress and Exalted One but found that a bit too adventurous. Besides it didn’t fit with the name structure we were aiming.

Oriental name options:
Hong-[name_u]Ray[/name_u]
Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u]
we wanted to have the “-[name_u]Ray[/name_u]” similar to his brother.

The names assembled will look as follows.
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak

Looking for options on:
First Name
Oriental Name (with the meaning because it is so hard)

and most importantly some guidance on how we could potentially assemble the name.
Any advice, options is welcome!

I’m not going to be much help with oriental names but I like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] Mak or [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] Mak best with [name_m]Jethro[/name_m]

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] Hong-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] is great!!

I’ll also suggest [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] Hong-[name_u]Ray[/name_u], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] Hong-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] and [name_m]Leon[/name_m] Hong-[name_u]Ray[/name_u]

Ditto I wouldn’t try advise on the oriental name!

I really love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] with [name_m]Jethro[/name_m]

I really like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], I think it’s sweet and fresh. I like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u]!

I’m definitely not qualified to suggest other [name_f]East[/name_f] [name_f]Asian[/name_f] names, and I’m not sure if my advice will be any good either but, I’m not sure I’d go with Hong-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] as it looks a lot like the word “hungry” to me. I’m not sure of pronunciation though, so I may be off base and it may be just fine to use!

Personally, I prefer and really love Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] though! It flows perfectly with all your fn ideas too!

From your list, I’m a big fan of [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak. They pair up nicely with [name_m]Jethro[/name_m]! [name_m]Jethro[/name_m] and [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] especially look and sound great together!

I also dig the idea of [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak and [name_m]Liam[/name_m] Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak.

I love
Ryko Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak

Thank you for the message. We like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] too, just wondering if the asian relatives will be having issues pronouncing them… They can learn!

Good pickup! I’ve been careful with acronyms and what it may sound like or potential bully names in the play ground. I’ll have a think of how we spell Hong-[name_u]Ray[/name_u], or Hoang if we were to go down that path.

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] sounds nice, but quite likely to be short formed to “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Amy[/name_f]” by his future friends ha ha. So far, [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] seems to be the name to go with where this thread if heading. I’ve asked the wife to come up with one final list of name options.

We have a few friends with newborns [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]…many illiterates will struggle to pronounce. Names like [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] for example is a classic case of a lifetime correction of your name…i know people pronouncing it as “vagaaan”. Thank you for the comments though, it got me considering.

I’m Cantonese (or at least by Heritage) and wife’s family is full blooded mandarin, hence the name [name_m]Ming[/name_m]-[name_u]Ray/name_u. Then again my mandarin is mediocre but improving through the days.

Back to the names in mandarin:
Xiang-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak - 祥”麦
Hong-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak - ”麦
[name_m]Jun[/name_m]-[name_u]Ray[/name_u] Mak - 俊”麦

Hey, just curious with Callumak. What language is it and what does it mean??

that’s still great insight. Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

I like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] from your list.

You asked about whether [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] is a male or female name. It’s masculine. The most well known [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] would be from the stories of [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].

Good luck!

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

for some reasons if you run a facebook report and you see tons of women with this name but I like it very much.

My son is named [name_m]Callum[/name_m] and we live in as expats in South [name_f]East[/name_f] [name_f]Asia[/name_f]. No one has had pronunciation issues with his name so far. So it gets my vote!
