Weirdest Baby Names of 2013

As I was checking my emails, I found an article on ParentDish about 2013’s weirdest baby names (http://www.parentdish.ca/2013/12/09/year-in-review-2013-weirdest-baby-names/ ) According to the article, the data is taken from BabyCenter, a popular baby site. According to BabyCenter US, 43% of parents chose an unusual/creative name this year (so the article says). This is the top 10 list they provided for the ‘weirdest baby names of 2013’.

Boys:

[name_m]Osbaldo[/name_m]
Danish
[name_m]Rocket[/name_m]
Yash
Cub
[name_u]Zion[/name_u]
Panda
[name_f]Hurricane[/name_f]
Leviathan
[name_u]Legend[/name_u]

Girls:

Azza
Kiwi
[name_f]Fairy[/name_f]
Archita
Wrigley
Kukua
Ezgi
Blip
[name_f]Nyx[/name_f]
[name_u]Green[/name_u]

What do you think? Are these weird enough to be the weirdest?

I kind of like Kiwi for a little lady.

Some of these names don’t surprise me - [name_u]Zion[/name_u] for example isn’t weird at all.

Panda though, or [name_f]Hurricane[/name_f]? Not great.

Some of these are pretty weird, but I’m reminded of a list I compiled from the 2011 data with some pretty out-there ones… Among them…

Girls:

Blessyng (Bad enough to name her Blessing, but Y the Y?!)
[name_m]Jermany[/name_m] (Again, bad enough to call her Germany…)
Sheccid (Perhaps this is a legitimate name in some culture, but it looks like a cross between [name_u]Shelly[/name_u] and Flaccid… ew.)
Swayze (Naming after [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] Swayze? …A daughter?! Swayzee and Swayzie were also listed. Altogether they amounted to 52 girls in 2011. Sigh.)

Boys:

Jakevious ([name_m]Jake[/name_m] and Mischievous, somehow combined for maximum horrible factor…)
Sauron (This is just mean.)
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] (I guess that’s one way to get [name_u]Freddie[/name_u]…)

[name_u]Zion[/name_u] isn’t all that weird, I know a [name_u]Zion[/name_u] (who is a teenager) but it does surprise me that it is on the Weird list.

We [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealanders call ourselves Kiwis, (because of the national bird) but naming a baby Kiwi? No thanks.

Maybe Cub is the new [name_m]Bear[/name_m], or [name_m]Wolf[/name_m]?

that’s what I guessed, parents who wanted to go for [name_m]Bear[/name_m]/[name_m]Wolf[/name_m] but felt it was ‘too trendy’ so they needed to go one step above with Cub :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, a number of these are very weird. But I really like [name_m]Rocket[/name_m], [name_u]Zion[/name_u], & [name_u]Legend[/name_u], [name_f]Fairy[/name_f], & [name_f]Nyx[/name_f]. Also, a number of people on nameberry have been discussing the name [name_u]Zion[/name_u]—I think there’s even a few who’ve named their son this. So, I agree with most the other comments—[name_u]Zion[/name_u]’s probably the least weird name listed.

gack!

I don’t have a current name to offer, but two old ones.

A great aunt was named [name_f]Myrtis[/name_f] and an old lady in my home town was named Dorolyene.

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], and a diner owner was named Bruceil.

Archita Wrigley Bruceil… that should win an award of some dubious sort. (I actually am fond of [name_f]Myrtis[/name_f] as a name, the way you might feel about a puce bud vase given to you by an old relative).

I think [name_f]Nyx[/name_f] is a fabulous name for a boy or a girl. Leviathin…that’s pretty epic. I have no idea what I would do if I came across a little baby named Leviathin. Pee my pants, probably.

The only one that’s really weird and disturbing to me is Hurricaine. It is horrible to name your child after natural disaster that causes so much pain to people.

Leviathan? The parents must have been huge [name_m]Hobbes[/name_m] fans.

I like [name_m]Rocket[/name_m] but I prefer it more on a girl thanks to Sucker Punch. [name_u]Zion[/name_u] does feel like the least weird name and is an alternative to [name_m]Dion[/name_m], Panda feels more like a nn for [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] to me thanks to Skins this time.

Kiwi is a term for a [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealander, but I have to say that I love the name [name_f]Nyx[/name_f] for a girl.

I know someone called Ezgi, so it seems pretty normal to me now.
