My daughter’s name is [name]Dahlia[/name], and we love it and it fits her to a tee. In fact, if our second child is female, I’m already feeling the pressure of giving her a name just as beautiful and perfect. (A boy will be a [name]Junior[/name].)
On the nameberry entry for [name]Dahlia[/name], it says the name has a bit of a “lah-di-dah air,” which frankly, I like. [name]Dahlia[/name] sounds like a name for a little lady who goes to ballet class and wears matching [name]Lilly[/name] Pulitzer sundresses. And if [name]Dahlia[/name] ends up being a tomboy (and she’s already showing a few signs ) the juxtaposition with the girly-girl name is just too cute.
Also… I am not afraid to boldly go for a flower or botanical theme! On the other hand, it’s not a requirement.
With that in mind, let’s play around with some “la-di-dah” sister names for [name]Dahlia[/name].
Here are a few preliminary thoughts:
[name]Camille[/name]/[name]Camilla[/name]/[name]Camellia[/name]
[name]Carolina[/name]
[name]Giselle[/name] (too much like the model?)
I like [name]Delphine[/name], but no way my conservative husband will go for that!
[name]Hi[/name]! [name]Dahlia[/name]'s lovely, and very “la-di-dah” in a ladylike, sweet sort of way.
Firstly, I don’t find [name]Camille[/name] to be “la-di-dah,” though I do love the name - it’s a bit too straitlaced for that. [name]Camilla[/name], though lovely, reminds me of [name]Camilla[/name] [name]Parker[/name] Bowles - odd since I’m not British! - so I don’t see that one having a “la-di-dah” flair to it, either. Why don’t I think of [name]Camilla[/name] [name]Belle[/name] or [name]Camila[/name] Alves? Strange…
The most “la-di-dah” name on your list, in my opinion, is [name]Giselle[/name], and I don’t automatically think of [name]Gisele[/name] Bundchen, myself. However, with [name]Dahlia[/name], perhaps you’d be interested in [name]Gisella[/name]? Very feminine and romantic. Here are other ideas for you to consider:
…all names that I like, but feel might be a little ‘la-di-dah’ for me [name]IRL[/name]. I don’t find [name]Camilla[/name] to be particularly rarefied, though it is a lovely choice, I think [name]Caroline[/name] is actually more patrician than [name]Carolina[/name], and [name]Giselle[/name] makes me think Bundchen, as well.
Wow, everyone! Thanks for your creative suggestions!
[name]Aurelia[/name] and [name]India[/name] are two of my absolute favorite names. Sadly, both were already vetoed by my husband in the process of naming [name]Dahlia[/name]. I feel like he may have given [name]Margot[/name] the boot somewhere along the line too.
I hadn’t thought of [name]Camilla[/name] [name]Parker[/name] Bowles, but now… I guess [name]Camilla[/name]'s out! Haha
[name]Camille[/name], though… Everyone else seems to like it as much as I do!
Other favorites from the thread:
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Gisella[/name]
[name]Zinnia[/name]
[name]Cassia[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Jaqueline[/name]
[name]Clarissa[/name] (very literary!)
[name]Georgina[/name]/[name]Georgiana[/name]
Thanks again, and more ideas are very welcome!
