"West" as a first name for a boy?

We have a problem…we love so many girls names but boys names just arent speaking to us!

We had always liked [name]Weston[/name], but friends just named their baby [name]Weston[/name]. So, what do you think about [name]West[/name] as an alternative?? We have a common last name so we wanted a slightly unusual first name.

I love just [name]West[/name]! [name]Weston[/name] and [name]Westley[/name] are nice, but aren’t as striking as just [name]West[/name], imo. I would love to meet a little boy named [name]West[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] or something. I love it.

[name]West[/name] is a fine, handsome, short, simple, and strong name for a baby.

However, if you’re not using [name]Weston[/name] to spare your friends from feeling like you “stole” or “borrowed” the name, I’m pretty sure [name]West[/name] is just as bad. If they’re close friends I would ask before you use [name]West[/name] (or [name]Weston[/name]).

Good point. Actually, we do not know them very well. They are more like acquaintances. But we have mutual friends, so I would feel like I was “copying” even though we had thought of it before we found out the name of their baby…

My husband is worried that “[name]West[/name]” alone sounds strange. It would be [name]West[/name] [name]Paul[/name] [name]James[/name] after our two fathers.

Honestly, if they’re more like acquaintances, I would go with the name you really love. If a mutual friend says anything, just tell them how you’ve had that name picked out way before you knew the other baby’s name. I like both [name]West[/name] and [name]Weston[/name]. Very handsome names.

Thanks for the feedback!

I am kind of preferring [name]West[/name] at this point instead of [name]Weston[/name], just because it seems a little bolder. Does it stand on its own the way I think it does? I have searched the name and it practically does not exist out there!!

If, as I suspect it may, this trend that favors “-ton, -son” sounds goes the way of a trend, you may actually be very happy you went with [name]West[/name] over [name]Weston[/name]. It’s fresh, grown up, sweet, and handsome. I think it’s perfect. [name]West[/name] [name]Paul[/name] [name]James[/name] is a lot of monosyllables though. I hope your last name has a little more meat to it, but honestly if you love [name]West[/name], it doesn’t matter.

I love [name]West[/name]! Much better than [name]Weston[/name] actually.

I totally agree about the monosyllables! It did cross my mind. The problem is, the other name we are considering is [name]Finn[/name]. Sadly the middle names are non-negotiable due to wanting to honor our fathers…Our last name has two syllables, which is better…

[name]Do[/name] you prefer [name]Finn[/name] or [name]West[/name]?

I love [name]West[/name], way more than [name]Weston[/name], actually. I think it is definitely a stand alone name. I prefer it over [name]Finn[/name] too, just because [name]Finn[/name] seems fairly popular right now.

I love both [name]Finn[/name] and [name]West[/name]. I think I like [name]West[/name] a little better, but that may be because I have a thing for W names. [name]Both[/name] are such great choices.

[name]Just[/name] an aside: I posted the name [name]West[/name] earlier today on a yahoo group and got negative responses. It is hard because these things are so subjective but I am confused as to why such negative responses on the other group?

Nameberry tends to be a pretty erudite crowd compared to most baby/naming/parenting groups.

I quite like [name]West[/name] but do not at all like it with monosyllabic [name]Paul[/name] and [name]James[/name]. [name]Jameson[/name] or Paulson would break up the choppy flow-- would they be of interest?

I don’t like it at all. If you need to use it, I think it should be as a nickname. If you can’t use [name]Weston[/name], what about [name]Wesley[/name]?

I agree with [name]Blade[/name], the nameberry crowd differs significantly from other sites. Lots of interest in uncommon/somewhat unheard of names here, so my advice would be to pick a name you are comfortable with, despite the love or lack thereof it gets on the forums. [name]West[/name] is a cool name, but I suspect it will also generate negative comments (perhaps from people who didn’t think of using it ;)) I think if you love it, you should go for it.
