Is the name [name]Minerva[/name] really cute for a little girl (as I think) or just too old auntish and out there? I think [name]Mina[/name] would be the nn. My other children are [name]Rafferty[/name] ([name]Rafe[/name]) [name]Bramwell[/name] ([name]Bram[/name]) and [name]Imogen[/name]. Thanks!
First of all, I love your other children’s names! Beautiful! [name]Bram[/name] is one of my favorite names. I really like the name [name]Minerva[/name]. To me, it has a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] association, though, but as long as you don’t mind that, I’d say go for it! [name]Mina[/name] is very cute, as is [name]Minnie[/name], I think. Great, classic name that is ready to be used again!
I don’t think [name]Minerva[/name] suits a young girl that well, but if you use a cute nickname like [name]Mina[/name], or [name]Minnie[/name] then it works just fine. And I like the way it sounds with your other children’s names too!
I like the name [name]Minerva[/name]! I think it fits well with your other kids, and [name]Mina[/name] is an adorable nickname.
Also, I love the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] connection!

Hmmm, [name]Minerva[/name] sounds very [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]-ish to me. And then it makes me think of a spot of irony in [name]Mirena[/name] (the birthcontrol ring). It sounds very old to me. I think [name]Mina[/name] is a very adorable name! However i think that it would be best suited with another name such as [name]Minnie[/name] as a previous poster suggested. [name]Mina[/name] doesnt quite seem to fit with [name]Minerva[/name] to me even though they are clearly similar enought to be a nn i guess the feel of [name]Minerva[/name] is vastly diffrent to me then [name]Mina[/name].
Sorry - I do think it sounds like a very old woman…but [name]Mina[/name] or [name]Minnie[/name] would modernize it, to use instead?
Cute name, sounds great with her siblings and adorable nicknames! What more could you want?! There is a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] connection, but I like it. Besides, a lot of people don’t know the first names of the adults in [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] that primary go by their last names. In other words, people (most likely) will not make the connection unless they are [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] fans…and then they’ll love it!
Thanks everyone for your comments and also compliments on my kids’ names. I agree [name]Minerva[/name] would fit in well with her sibs and also that [name]Minnie[/name] would be a good nn, especially as she will be the baby of the family!
I didn’t even think of the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] connection so your responses are really helpful. [name]Minerva[/name] is actually the [name]Roman[/name] goddess of wisdom and invention but more recent history has taken over, I guess! I will keep it on our list for now–thanks again!
[name]Minerva[/name] is my dh great great grandmother’s name. It is a classic that is not out there. Classic, uncommon, a good combination.
I think of the goddess [name]Minerva[/name] when I see/hear this name. She was a [name]Roman[/name] goddess, the equivalent of the Greek goddess [name]Athena[/name]. I think it’s gorgeous, a name that comes with a sweet nickname, but is a strong name for a grown woman.
I don’t know the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] characters very well, so when I hear [name]Minerva[/name], I definitely think of the goddess of wisdom first. I like it.
I did not personally know that [name]Minerva[/name] was the “goddess of wisdom”, and quite honestly i dont think many other people will either. The [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] connection will more then likely be a problem with people in their teens now and early twentys. [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] was a HUGE success in that timeframe (like for me i was in my late teens when it was very popoular so it is a very prominante possiblity to me that alot of people will make that conneciton). I think the greek mythology will be a good thing to tell people when they ask why she is named that or ask if she was named from harry potter. I happen to think of [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] 3 or 4 years ago as Twilight is now. There will be tons of [name]Bella[/name]'s, Edwards, and so on and most people will ask “oh like from twilight?” Ya know? Im not tryingto be mean and i hope i did not offend you but i really do think of it as a larger possible problem then most others. Good [name]Luck[/name] in whatever you choose!
I don’t love it. I especially don’t love [name]Mina[/name] or [name]Minnie[/name] for nicknames.
It’s too harsh sounding for girl, a women in my opinion.
What about:
[name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Margot[/name]
I don’t care for [name]Minerva[/name], sorry. I think of the goddess right away (would never have thought of the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] connection). I just don’t care for the sounds - something about the r and v being together I think. I love the [name]Mina[/name] nn though (and prefer it over [name]Minnie[/name]).
I love [name]Minerva[/name]! Its so beautiful. I too think of [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. The only thing is if you use [name]Bram[/name] as a nickname for your son and [name]Mina[/name] for her nickname I would assume you’re a Dracula fan. [name]Bram[/name] is the name of the man that wrote it and [name]Mina[/name] is in the book as a nickname for [name]Wilhelmina[/name].
i’m going to be the odd person out here because i really dislike this name… I love the nn [name]Mina[/name], but when i hear [name]Minerva[/name], i think “nervous”…
i didn’t read harry potter so i don’t have that connection… i do like ancient sounding names, particularly those associated with roman or greek mythology… but this one just has a very un-pretty sound to it and i dislike it with your other childrens’ names, which are all very lovely.
Here are some (greek and roman) alternatives i like a little better::
Maera
[name]Calypso[/name]
[name]Artemis[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name]
You’re not odd! I’m unfamiliar with [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], so, well, it strikes me that suddenly people found [name]Hermione[/name] charming - I wonder what they would have said about it before there was one in a popular book. I don’t know a lot about mythology either. I get that this deeper meaning fills people up with great feelings, but the sound of the name is pretty darn quirky. It sounds directly from a nursing home to me, and not young and sweet and smart and creative - or whatever. I could get used to it, but then I’m still trying to think whether I dare use [name]Helen[/name], which is pretty dull compared to [name]Minerva[/name], but also quite nursing home-ish. Maybe I’m just a fuddy duddy. When I think of how far names have come to an area where they just sound so much crustier than they used to - I think about [name]Melissa[/name] next to [name]Minerva[/name], while [name]Melissa[/name] is no longer popular. [name]Madison[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Wilhelmina[/name]. We are headed straight-long into [name]Bertha[/name] at this rate. [name]Just[/name] a head’s up. I don’t think [name]Minerva[/name] is much more charming than [name]Bertha[/name], but it’s not as bad as [name]Mildred[/name] or Etheldred as long as I’m down here. Be patient Etheldred fans. It’s going to be ok soon. I think [name]Minerva[/name] has a lot better meaning than it actually sounds out loud, and maybe it’s not as bad as I think it is to other people - people who read [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], I guarantee are going to spot this before you get a lot of recognition for the mythological significance. People who haven’t read [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] are probably going to scratch their heads on it.
I love older names, but I have to admit that I’m not a [name]Minerva[/name] fan, either. It reminds me of “nerves” and “my nerves,” and I can’t picture it on someone who can get around without the assistance of a walker and an IV drip. [name]Minerva[/name] is all nursing home to me, but if I met a little [name]Minerva[/name], perhaps I’d feel differently. (I’m sorry!)
I really love your children’s names!
Good luck!
I’M not a [name]Minerva[/name] fan either. I hear my nerves as well. Perhaps you like [name]Maeva[/name]? it has a similar feel to me. Fwiw I like [name]Minnie[/name] and [name]Mina[/name] as nns but I think they are too cute or juvinile to stand alone.
I’d love to see it used more
