What Animated Movies Are Good For Little Ones?

We love Disney in our house! The only one she hasn’t seen is Pinnochio because it really scared me as a child, specifically the parts where they were swallowed by a whale and the little boy turned into a donkey.

Her favourites are Tangled, Sleeping Beauty, [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f], Beauty and the Beast, [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] (admittedly this isn’t her favourite and she won’t watch it alone), The Jungle Book, The Swan [name_f]Princess[/name_f], and Shrek. She absolutely loves Shrek!

As for TV I monitor what she watches. I don’t allow Nickelodeon (it makes my brain melt, I swear!) because her dad absolutely detests Spongebob Squarepants, or Cartoon Network, all she’s allowed to watch is Playhouse Disney.

Favourites on Playhouse Disney include [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] the First, [name_m]Jake[/name_m] and the Neverland Pirates, Special Agent Oso and [name_m]Little[/name_m] Einsteins.

She watches more dvds than tv, and at that, never for more than an hour or so each day.

After watching Equestria Girls today, I would like to recommend it and the whole My [name_m]Little[/name_m] Pony Series

As a little kid I watched nearly every Disney movie known to man! It’s funny that everyone mentions how traumatic [name_f]Bambi[/name_f] is, but as a little girl, I didn’t grasp the concept of what had happened to [name_f]Bambi[/name_f]'s mother.

Favourite films as a kid: [name_m]Lion[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] (but I cried A LOT!!!) Sleeping Beauty, [name_f]Treasure[/name_f] Planet (Great for older kids,) [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and The [name_u]Magic[/name_u] Railroad (I really loved this when I was little!) [name_m]Aladdin[/name_m], [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White (I know some kids find this scary though!) Dumbo (the scene where the tents get set up scared me!) The Aristocats, [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Pan[/name_m], The Sword in the [name_m]Stone[/name_m], [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland, [name_m]Pete[/name_m]'s Dragon, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s [name_m]Web[/name_m] (Cartoon)

I loved a lot of low budget films as a little kid e.g. The [name_u]Magic[/name_u] Voyage, The [name_f]Princess[/name_f] and The Goblin. Kids seems to know what frightens them and what movies they’d like to watch over and over again. Movies to steer away from (until there a bit older:) The Never Ending [name_u]Story[/name_u] - I hear a lot of people say this one scared them, The [name_m]Black[/name_m] Cauldron, Pinocchio (Maybe? I saw this and it didn’t really bother me…but) [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f] (because of the subject matter…maybe?) anything [name_m]Tim[/name_m] [name_m]Burton[/name_m], Monster’s Inc (According to some - probably due to the screaming and “scare power”) [name_f]Narnia[/name_f], [name_m]Willy[/name_m] Wonka and The Chocolate Factory (tunnel scene,) The [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m] (I hated the scene where the woman turns into the witch!)

It varies from kid to kid; my niece loved the live-action [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland (the one with [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] Depp), but screamed and cried through the animated Disney version.

I think [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Einsteins would be entertaining enough for young kids, wouldn’t it? My nieces like the [name_u]Neptune[/name_u] one.

Best movie I would say is Finding [name_m]Nemo[/name_m]. My 3 year old loves it, and even my 7th graders I teach will still watch it. My daughter also loves Wreck It [name_m]Ralph[/name_m], and would appeal to even the old kids as well. I don’t think any of the Pixar movies are really that “scary.” A lot of the more perilous scenes go over the youngsters heads and they are into it but not scared.

My mum does daycare some of them:
Legends of the guardians: their are some scary scenes but there is happy ending. And a two year old was watching it with us and she wasn’t scared and refused to go to sleep so she could watch it.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland: I love it still even though I’m 14
Muppets wizard of oz: It has the full story but its not as scary as the original
Finding nemo: I recently watched this again with my friend and her 16 year old brother. Reminding how much I loved it.

All of the Tinkerbell movies are really nice and not at all scary. I like them because they definitely do not have the “damsel in distress” theme someone else mentioned. They are more about being a good friend, being yourself, etc. My just-turned-3-year old loves them. There are 4 different ones on Netflix. I forget the exact titles.

My kids are two girls ages 7 and 3, and a boy age 5. They love [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] and the Chipmunks, and The Muppets. [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] movies and Bedknobs and Broomsticks are the other favourites.

We love Disney movies in our house! E is 2 and A is 5 and they don’t tend to get upset although E was upset about [name_m]Simba[/name_m]'s dad in the [name_m]Lion[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]. [name_u]Issy[/name_u] is still young but is content watching it and falls asleep whenever. They also love Curious [name_m]George[/name_m]! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if we don’t watch a movie, it’s sometimes little episodes such as Peppa Pig or the Numberjacks. They are also happy watching Tinypop, [name_u]Nick[/name_u] [name_m]Jr[/name_m] and Cbeebies. They like most of the shows which are child friendly and even I enjoy.

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] loved this too. She is now requesting we ask [name_f]Santa[/name_f] for the dolls for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u]!

i was always sacred of the ending of [name_f]Fantasia[/name_f]. but i just turned it off.

dont think you shouldnt let your kid watch a movie because of a ‘scary’ part - in Disney i think of Jafar turning into a giant cobra, Maleficent into the dragon, or [name_m]Gaston[/name_m] fighting Beast.

but looking back though those times were ‘scary’ i was never traumatized or over analyzing the images i saw - it was just a story and i rewatched again and again anyway.

if they dont like it, you’ll proly know right away and can either comfort them and get them to have a better understanding that its just a movie, or know to shelf that movie for a lil while and try it out again in a month or so.

being scared sometimes is a part of life, kids need to learn that. plus i think we shouldnt over protect our kids, especially from fairy tales!

My son loved (still loves) Cars, Bolt, [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f], and PBS’s Curious [name_m]George[/name_m]. He’s always been a sensitive kid, and nothing in those movies/shows bothered him.

I always found [name_f]Fantasia[/name_f] nightmarish, but the one kids’ movie that really scared the bejeezus out of me when I was young was The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] of NIMH. Syringes, fire, and whirling plow blades, oh my.

As a kid I watched all the Disney classics. Especially the [name_f]Princess[/name_f] Ones (Beauty and the Beast, [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White, Sleeping Beauty, The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid, etc). I really don’t get it when people pull the damsel-in-distress card…those were my favorite types of movies as a kid but I didn’t grow up believing I needed a man to take care of me. My foster brother watched them with me too and he didn’t grow believing women were whiny and couldn’t do things for themselves, even to this day HE loves watching Disney movies with his 3 year old son and 6 year old daughter.

There were a couple scenes in certain movies that I wouldn’t watch without my brother, sister or mom; movies like: [name_f]Bambi[/name_f], The [name_m]Lion[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m], Dumbo, The [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m] (especially this one!!) and Beauty and the Beast…I’m sure there were more too. But I watched them. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though some scenes scared me…I refused to stop watching them. And I agree with the person that said they didn’t really grasp what happened to [name_f]Bambi[/name_f]'s mom when they were a young kid. I had the same feeling with that movie and many others with tragic events like that in other movies.

As for shows: my favorite was I [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]…which I think is pretty child friendly

I personally plan to show my kids all the movies and shows I watched as a kid as well as any newly made ones I find suitable. I don’t plan to let my kids watch that many shows though, I really can’t stand some of the shows that are put on TV nowadays and it would be so easy for me to turn around for 5 minutes while they change the channel to something inappropriate. It will mostly be movies (that way I know for sure what they are watching) for us.

I’m just starting to introduce shows to [name_m]Cato[/name_m] but he is only 14 months old and still doesn’t have the attention span to watch something for more than 5-10 minutes without jumping around. He would much rather be doing something than watching something which I’m happy to comply with. When he is tired and before he has his bath though he is usually more willing to watch something and snuggle on the couch (He likes anything with music at that time).

As he gets older (like at between 2-4 years old) I will start to show him stuff like [name_m]Bob[/name_m] the Builder, [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u], Curious [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_u]Max[/name_u] & [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] (my nephew loves this), I [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as well as some of the less scary Disney movies like [name_m]Tarzan[/name_m], [name_f]Spirit[/name_f], [name_m]Toy[/name_m] [name_u]Story[/name_u], Beauty and the Beast and Finding [name_m]Nemo[/name_m]…

Bottom line is I think you should just show kids a movie and if they show obvious signs of being too scared to watch it then just shut it off and try again when they are older…basically I work by Trial and Error.

My daughter is 1.5 & we don’t have TV or watch a lot of movies while she’s awake. Cause of this lack of exposure & her young age she reacts to not only scary, but what I would call ‘intense moments’ when she does watch a show/movie or catch a glimpse at a friend’s house or a grandparent’s. The only show that she hasn’t reacted with fear to is Calliou, I find the character rather annoying, but it is a calm show for little ones. Also, Curious [name_m]George[/name_m] is OK, it is a bit more full of adventure, but it’s cute & I find it much more tolerable! Our personal fave are baby animal shows.

My 4 year old scares pretty easily, but she’s still pretty odd. The things she loves watching:: The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid (she’s a little scared of the shark chase in the beginning, although [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] doesn’t bother her), Tangled, [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] movies (especially [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] as [name_f]Rapunzel[/name_f]), Care Bears (the newer ones), The Muppets (she LOVES the movie that came out 2011), Enchanted, The Smurfs (the old cartoons more than the new movie, but both still), [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland (which somehow doesn’t scare her). As far as tv shows, she likes the Disney [name_m]Jr[/name_m] and [name_u]Nick[/name_u] [name_m]Jr[/name_m] stuff, but lately she prefers Big Time [name_m]Rush[/name_m], [name_u]Sam[/name_u] & [name_f]Cat[/name_f], and [name_u]Jessie[/name_u].

My 7 year old is not easily scared at all. His favorite show is [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who, and if anything remotely scary happens, he just gets excited. He doesn’t really love animated movies, but he has enjoyed The Sword in the [name_m]Stone[/name_m] and [name_u]Robin[/name_u] Hood, as well as the newer stuff:: Despicable Me, [name_u]Rio[/name_u], all the [name_m]Toy[/name_m] [name_u]Story[/name_u] movies, most recently Turbo. He’d rather watch live action movies ([name_m]Thor[/name_m], Iron [name_m]Man[/name_m] 1-3, The Avengers, X-Men, [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_u]America[/name_u], Diary of a Wimpy Kid), but animated TV shows.

[name_m]Both[/name_m] of them loved Epic, but I could see how it could be scary at times. And at the moment, neither of them can tear away from [name_f]Tiny[/name_f] Toons.

What exactly happens in the ending? I’m just curious.

  1. I would highly recommend Santa Paws (The scene where Paws turned into a toy because his crystal was taken away and Paws was put in the place where toys are destroyed was scary though but the others save him so that’s no problem)
  2. There’s also Santa Buddies and Snow Buddies.
  3. Dumbo and The Lion King were also great!
  4. Also My Little Pony: The Movie!!!
  5. Chestnut: The Hero Of Central Park was also nice but there’s a scene in which Chestnut is badly wounded and everyone is crying (Don’t worry, he gets better)

Hope this helps!
