What are the WASPiest Names You Can Think Of?

[name]One[/name] of my girlfriends is a lobbiest and was joking the other day how in her wild up-and-coming “youth” how boy crazy she was of fellows with WASP-esque names. She named a few that she dated during her DC days…I can’t remember them right now, but think along the lines Wilthrop Barrington Pemberwell. We know another ulter posh woman with the nickname “Muffy” (not at all associated with her full name).

I have to admit part of me likes these types of names, but I definitely would never go for it in real life. Maybe if we added about 3 zeros to my net worth

[name]Alistair[/name] is the WASP name that I really really like. Definitely old [name]Lord[/name] so-and-so in his library wearing his smoking jacket.

It used to be Surnames as first names or an ancestors name but that’s sort of filtered down and everyone uses those now. The waspiest people I know now tend to use simple classic names like [name]Jane[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], etc…

I try not to be swayed by Hollywood Screenwriter Stereotypical names (they’re all 20-something Jewish guys who grew up in Encino or [name]Long[/name] Island and now live in Studio City.) They’re the guys that churn out the “3 random surname” names.

In the US, there are Yankee WASPs and Southern WASPs. For the former, the sorts of names that scream topsiders, seersucker, cottages on Nantucket, firm beliefs about the superiority of wooden-hulled boats and prep school are nicknames like [name]Chip[/name], [name]Trey[/name], Ducky, Muffy, and the like (all as shorthand for core classic names, perhaps with one important family name).

In the South, for the thoroughbred breeding, bourbon-swilling, High Church Episcopal types, it’s all [name]Mary[/name] + mother’s maiden name for the girls (i.e. [name]Mary[/name] [name]Collins[/name], [name]Mary[/name] Forsythe, [name]Mary[/name] [name]Beauchamp[/name]) plus the genealogical cherry-picking for the boys, surnames or firsts.

The waspiest people I know have a mix of expected & unexpected names like

[name]Jerome[/name]
[name]Gina[/name]
[name]Cameron[/name]
[name]Theresa[/name]
[name]Kate[/name]

Lol. My mixed cousin just had another baby. His name? [name]Jerome[/name], named after his black grandfather, [name]Kenneth[/name] [name]Jerome[/name].

I think [name]Molly[/name] is super WASP. I can’t picture a person of color named [name]Molly[/name].

i think of names like [name]Chad[/name] and [name]Todd[/name] for boys. Girls are a little harder to pin down. [name]Barbie[/name]? [name]Ken[/name]?
