Hello! We are still trying to decide between [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] and [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u]. But I was reading a thread on Facebook about recently used names. They were mostly girl names so it wasn’t much help or inspiration for me (having a boy, due in [name_u]December[/name_u]) but it made me feel like I’m not in trend with the times at all! Two people named their daughters [name_u]Gentry[/name_u] - which I had no idea was being used for girls so much right now! If girls are getting such masculine names, what are the current trends for boys? [name_f]My[/name_f] husband likes classic so I think I’m stuck with more traditional names but is that going to be odd in today’s name styles? I’m feeling like if anything goes for girls, what about boys?
So help!
What are you naming your boy in 2020 (or in the past 36 months) - what are the cool boy names? Or teachers, tell me the boys in your classes these days!!
And would [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] or [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] be really out of date or should I not care? I’m not into trends typically but this is a big decision that I’m trying to get right. I know theres no right or wrong when it comes to names but I do feel like at least girl names are completely different nowadays and I’m wondering what space is left for the boys?!! It seemed like vintage names were coming back into style a few years back but now I’m seeing really modern names hitting the scene and not as many vintage names coming back into style. I’m not around kids so I’m taking a shot in the dark and trying to understand!
There’s a ton of vintage names coming back right now, actually. [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] fit in perfectly and are both fairly popular. [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] maybe wouldn’t “fit in” as much, but that doesn’t really matter in the long run.
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] are definitely current! Also, I really don’t think it matters if it’s trendy. As long as you love the name! Here are some names I’ve heard a lot for boys, but I still think you have great contenders already!
Elliott and [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] are definitely on trend for boys. [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] somewhat is in the sense that the name is a title, a trend which has seen a spike too (example, boys named [name_m]King[/name_m]) but [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] itself has sort of maintained itself as well known without ever being super popular, which is also something parents like to go for nowadays too
Interesting- most of these are not my style at all but I want to know the names of [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]/Marshall/ or [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u]’s future best friends!
Marshall actually is a [name_u]French[/name_u] name that means “one who tends to (or loves) horses.” I really love the meaning as I see it as sweet and caring and I also love horses! I like that it’s not a popular.
Elliott has been growing on me so much that I think it’s my top right now, although I go back and forth between [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] like multiple times per day!
Wyatt is a classic favorite but it’s been in third for me due to its popularity actually.
It’s hard! You want to find something timely but not overused! I saw so many cool but also surprising combinations for girls on that thread of modern names - was just curious what I am missing for the boys!
Ryan (lots of these)
[name_u]Jayden[/name_u]/Jaden/Jaydan (so, so, so many of these)
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Kevin[/name_m] (quite a few of these)
[name_u]Christian[/name_u]
[name_u]Michael[/name_u]
[name_m]Brandon[/name_m]
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
I would so much rather meet [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], or [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] than yet another [name_u]Jayden[/name_u], trust me! It would be refreshing.
Our son is due in one month and we are naming him [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] [name_m]Walter[/name_m]. [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] is a name we both like and [name_m]Walter[/name_m] is an honor name. [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] was on our short list too. Best of luck!
Casper, [name_u]Harry[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], and [name_m]Archie[/name_m] were our top choices if our first was a boy
Elliott is right on trend, I know of a few boys with that name.
From daycare cubbies or stickers at the library, I’ve seen [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_u]Rex[/name_u], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u],[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
I’m a teacher at a Title 1 elementary school and some of my boys last year were:
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]
[name_m]Brody[/name_m]
[name_u]Michael[/name_u]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m]
[name_u]Connor[/name_u]
[name_u]Miles[/name_u]
[name_u]Parker[/name_u]
[name_m]Tommy[/name_m]
Elliott and [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] are both quite on trend currently, so if you’re wanting a trendy 2020 choice then either of those would be great. But I don’t think you should focus on ‘fitting in’ with what everyone else is naming their babies – just go with the name you love most! Trends are constantly going in and out of style and I think it’s much more interesting to have a name you don’t share with loads of other people.
Names we were discussing before we found out we were having a girl were Flynn, Elio, Atticus, August, Jasper, Remy…
Popular names where I teach are Hugo, Finn, Jack, Felix, Henry, Oliver, Sebastian, Oscar and Harry (these are high school boys) and others I see at school and amongst younger kids (between 0-5) in addition to the above are Louis, Marlowe, Roman, Jasper, Otto, Hudson, Raphael, Theodore, Max, Atlas, Milo, Freddie, River, Darcy, Caspar, Arlo, Jude, Archie, Otis and Leo.
Elliott definitely fits in. I’m sure Wyatt does too although it’s not one I ever come across here in Australia; I know it’s more popular in the States though. And Marshall is less common but no less fresh and appropriate for a child of today!
I think no matter which name you choose your child will fit in just fine.
I know 2 [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]’s under 36 months, I also know several [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]’s and Wyatts.
Some of the names my friends/ family have named their newborn boys recently are
[name_m]Dax[/name_m]
[name_u]Keegan[/name_u]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]
[name_u]Montgomery[/name_u]
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_u]Landon[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_u]Karson[/name_u]
[name_u]Seth[/name_u]
I have also seen a huge spike in B names. Notably [name_u]Barrett[/name_u] , [name_u]Brooks[/name_u] and [name_m]Brody[/name_m] and Bohdi
I feel like people are trying to find very uncommon/ unique names . Very rarely do I run into young [name_m]Matthews[/name_m] , [name_m]David[/name_m]’s, [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]’s
Wow, everyone tells me how uncommon [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] is so surprised to hear you know of 2! [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] is #26 so I worried about him having like 3 others in his class! [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] I know is decently popular but not as much as [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u].
I love [name_m]Dax[/name_m] too! Couldn’t really figure out a combo for it. [name_f]My[/name_f] combos are:
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_u]Reece[/name_u], [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] [name_u]Austin[/name_u] or [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] [name_u]Asher[/name_u].
I was thinking maybe [name_m]Dax[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m] was nice - although it’s funny I usually dont love [name_m]William[/name_m]. I prefer the [name_m]German[/name_m] spelling [name_m]Wilhelm[/name_m] but that’s just going to lead to pronunciation questions!
Anyway I probably shouldn’t add another name into our options since we cant even decide between these three! I also like [name_u]Montgomery[/name_u], and I’m sure he would just be called [name_m]Monty[/name_m], which I like but it’s just very long!
I think [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_m]David[/name_m] and [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] type names are considered 80s or something like [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f] or [name_f]Amy[/name_f] - names that are perfectly fine but parents are trying to find something fresh. That’s why I was curious which vintage names are in and which are just totally out. Its interesting though because if you did name your child [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] he might be the only one in his class - how funny is that! Name trends are interesting to me!
Thank you sarahjane1! We are thrilled with the name we decided on. People on this forum were a ton of help! [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] is an excellent choice! Like you I like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] or [name_u]Elias[/name_u] with the nn [name_u]Eli[/name_u]. Those were names we considered as well! Best of luck to you!
I feel the same way - so many names I love that I didn’t realise were getting popular seem to be rising fast. All the names I mentioned, even the ones that aren’t in the top 100, seem to be gaining traction in NSW (or maybe around the country).
I’ve even seen [name_m]Elio[/name_m], one of my favourites, used by a photographer I follow… I really hope it doesn’t get popular, it’s a definite possibility if we have a boy next.
I love [name_u]Atlas[/name_u], such a gorgeous name! I’ve only come across one if that makes you feel better. And I adore [name_u]Milo[/name_u] - I think you should go for it! It isn’t in the top 100 and although I hear it occasionally, I don’t think it’s necessarily exploding in popularity.
One of the names that I like if we have a boy next is [name_m]Felix[/name_m], which all of a sudden jetted into the top 100 this year. So annoying! And there are so many where I teach, so it’s definitely affected my feelings about it unfortunately.
It does seem like a handful of boy names are on people’s radars! Or they’ve started using them for girls! I’m most worried about [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] because everyone I talk to about it knows several or considered naming their boy that.
I know [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is back in style but it doesn’t seem quite as popular as [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] and people have told me [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] is rare.
I like [name_m]Elio[/name_m] - that is cute. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband vetoed [name_u]Elias[/name_u] though so he’s oddly particular even if names are similar apparently. But I wonder if I could use [name_m]Elio[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] if we decide to go with it.
Atlas, [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] seemed mentioned a lot on these type of forums. They are very handsome but it’s just crazy how all of a sudden a name gets traction!
I’m in [name_u]California[/name_u]- here as far as I can tell (I’m not around kids yet so hard to really know) - [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Issac[/name_m], names that start with [name_m]Fin[/name_m] ([name_m]Finnian[/name_m], [name_u]Finley[/name_u]) are really popular.
I love [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] but I’m holding out because if I ever have a girl I want to name her [name_u]Harlow[/name_u]!!
