What are your biggest name pet peeves?

I have a few mysef. Dont take offense to any of this, i just myself like things simple and understandable.

Mine are

  • When people make up a random name (sybil, kirirll, mikhail)

  • When people spell names incorrectly (skyelar Instead of skyler or jaykob instead of jacob)

  • Names that arent meant to be names (river, posey, axel, oak, stormy, etc)

  • Names that have more letters added on to them whem theyre better off by themselves (katelyn instead of kate or gracelynn instead of grace)

What are yours?

My pet peeve is when people post rants about names being made up, trendy, “white trash” without having any research or actual reason to back it up other than a dislike for the name.

[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and [name_m]Mikhail[/name_m] are not made up names in the slightest.

Please do some research before branding something you are clearly unfamiliar with as “made up”.

In addition to what was said above, I must point out that [name_m]Axel[/name_m] is a name completely unconnected to the English word axle.

I can agree that [name_u]Skyelar[/name_u] feels unnecessary to me, but there are unusual or “made up” spellings of other names that I find prettiest or I prefer, like [name_u]Rylee[/name_u] and [name_u]Ryley[/name_u]. Also, [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f] is a spelling variation of [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], an Irish version of [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. [name_f]Gracelynn[/name_f] is actually quite pretty imo, although I would spell it with only one N, [name_f]Gracelyn[/name_f]

All I am against is spelling. Like [name_u]Jae[/name_u] instead of [name_u]Jay[/name_u], or using [name_u]Jay[/name_u] on a girl. Trendy spellings like [name_m]Jaxon[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] or [name_m]Kaeden[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Caden[/name_m]. I also dont like it when people replace ley/ly with [name_u]Leigh[/name_u]. I have always read [name_u]Leigh[/name_u] like [name_m]Lay[/name_m]. Like the name [name_u]Leighton[/name_u] is pronounced [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-ton, not [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-ton

I also don’t like -son names on girls. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u] are boys names. They mean [name_m]Son[/name_m] of. You wouldn’t name your son [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] because it means ‘daughter of the sea’. It’s the same with -son names.

Lastly, I cant stand it when people use [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] on girls. [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] maybe, but [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] is a biblical boys name!

Agree with both of these.

Sometimes I can’t stand C names with a K spelling - [name_f]Khloe[/name_f], [name_f]Klaire[/name_f], [name_f]Kordelia[/name_f], [name_m]Kaleb[/name_m].

I also don’t like filler middle names such as [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. On their own they are pretty but I hate the fact that they are a middle for every second girl. As if there aren’t enough names!

Right… Sybil is a perfectly fine and imo slightly Victorian name.
Mikhail is a legitimate spelling. Just like Michael, Michel or Michele… people assuming that the only “correct” spelling of a name is the English one… that is definitely one of my personal pet peeves…

Axel is a Germanic/Nordic name. It’s definitely meant to be a name! How did you even come up with that?

Edit: just saw that others have already pretty much summed this up. Oops…

I understand that you want things simple. But calling legitimate names “made up” or saying that they aren’t even meant to be names is actually really rude imo.

My pet peeves? Generic middle names. Those that feel (and I do know that I am being quite presumptuous, and it is simply a personal impression) like the parents just wanted to add anything… But if it flows nicely then that’s still really pretty. So maybe not really a pet pet peeve.

Oh, I have one. Names with clearly and quite obviously erotic associations. Why do that to a child?

I agree with this. Also, [name_m]Mikhail[/name_m] and [name_m]Kirill[/name_m] are both super popular Russian boys names.

I second this also.

One of my pet peeves is people seemingly not thinking about the person that will actually have to live with the name, their child, when choosing a name. This child has to introduce themselves to other people, spell out their name to people, explain the pronunciation; I can think of better things to do than to spell out Muhrryllhin or get people to pronounce Byatris as [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] for 80+ years.

Also adding suffixes to random names, [name_f]Aureliana[/name_f], Noralie, Matildette? Why? Is anybody but you ever going to call them by their full names?

And names that are heavily associated with religion, a certain movement, etc. - let your child figure out who they are before labeling them as something they may never want to be

My pet peeves are when names are spelt crazy out of the box, like Ahmeelyar ([name_f]Emilia[/name_f]) or when the name given to an actual child doesn’t have a decent meaning and there clearly hasn’t been any research into that name

I genuinely do not like:

  • Names meaning “son of ______” used on girls. Like why use [name_u]Madison[/name_u]/[name_u]Addison[/name_u] over [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Adeline[/name_f] on girls? Also [name_m]Son[/name_m] is a strictly male word, you use the word Daughter when referring to female kids.

  • Names ending in -[name_u]Leigh[/name_u] with the exception of [name_u]Leigh[/name_u] itself. I never got the fascination, it just looks like someone trying too hard.

  • [name_m]Miles[/name_m]. Overused + It doesn’t sound like a name to me. It just makes me think people would seriously name their kid after a unit of measurement that you put an “s” at the end. I know that’s not the definition of the name but I still don’t like that connotation.

Im sorry if you thought it was rude but its just my opinion, everyone has one. I also meant personally i wouldnt do it, people can do whatever they want.
