Also, if you guys don’t mind sharing what made you love your fav combo I would love to know.
I’m really, really big on honor names! I incorporate one (or two…or three) into every combo I make—at least, the ones I dream about and would consider giving to any of my children. That’s usually what makes me love a combo! A mix of beautiful sounds, creative honors. Nickname potential is always a bonus, too. I love a nickname!
Some of my current favorite combos off the top of my head (to sort of display what makes me fall in love with a combo in time) are…
[name_f]Tuesday[/name_f] [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Liv[/name_f]
→ Honors the day I was born (Tuesday), my middle name/great-grandmother’s name (Elizabeth), and my sister’s middle name/grandma’s name (Olivia).
[name_u]Campbell[/name_u] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]
→ Honors my great-grandmother’s maiden surname as well as a book character I love with the same surname (Campbell), one of my mother’s and sister’s favorite books (Anne), and my mother (Alisyn) with the flow of “Alice Anne.”
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
→ Honors four of my favorite girls whose names begin with S, C, E, and R (Frances), my loves of music and creative writing (Allegra, also the name of my most treasured writing teacher’s daughter), and my favorite literary heroine (Jo March).
[name_m]Phineas[/name_m] [name_u]December[/name_u] [name_u]Willow[/name_u] ‘Fritz’
→ Honors my father’s birth month and the month of my absolute favorite holiday (December) and a treasured memory of watching one of my mom’s favorite movies on a rainy day with her and my day (Willow)—reminds me of hope and magic.
[name_m]Harold[/name_m] [name_m]Raymond[/name_m] [name_u]March[/name_u] ‘Harry’
→ Honors my love of niche film with a name I started to love thanks to my favorite filmmaker using it for her son as well as my uncle as well as my sister’s name if she’d been a boy (Harold/Harry), the surname of a family I’ve babysat for for years who mean a ton to me (Raymond), and the surname of my favorite literary family (March).
[name_m]Louis[/name_m] [name_m]Orchard[/name_m] [name_u]Jay[/name_u]
→ Honors my favorite author (Alcott!), a favorite song/house/image of mine (Orchard), and my love for my cousins as well as my father’s inspiration (Jay).
This is a non-exhaustive list, by all means. There are many, many more where those came from!
[name_f]Sarai[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - for me, I like the mix of sharp and gentler sounds, the no-frills feel, but the princessy meaning that gives it balance. I like the distinctive sounds of [name_f]Sarai[/name_f] and the classic, strong, lively feel of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]! Also nn [name_u]Rai[/name_u] is appealing to me
[name_m]Sholto[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] - this one is rugged, distinctive and cool! It combines a lot of the sounds I like in other boys names (Cosmo, [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u], [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_m]Horatio[/name_m], [name_m]Calix[/name_m], Alec) along with the elements/vibes of things like [name_m]Brynmor[/name_m], [name_m]Caedmon[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]. It’s unusual and just makes me happy!
[name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] - besides of the beautiful sound, this name is special to me because the name [name_f]Summer[/name_f] gives me some sort of nostalgia feeling because it reminds me of childhood summers all those years ago and also my brother was born in summer many years ago so it just reminds me of very happy times. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] has been on the top of my list since forever for no particular reason it’s just really pretty.
[name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] [name_u]Storm[/name_u] - [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] is a honor name to my husband’s brother and also I love the meaning “son of the south” since I grew up in the [name_u]South[/name_u]. The middle [name_u]Storm[/name_u] is also an [name_u]Honor[/name_u] name to a very special person who sadly passed away a few years ago.
I will save this post too! Haha
Well… I don’t really have favourite combos. Maybe [name_f]Ofelia[/name_f] [name_f]Mei[/name_f] and [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]?
Am rusty - haven’t been on here for a few years but now back! Combinations for me involve rhythm, syllable count including last name, pleasing to say and hear, no jarring transitions (eg end letter of one name same as the starting letter of the next), beautiful meaning, honouring loved ones, and something unexpected.
[name_f]My[/name_f] fave combos (for next 24 hrs anyway) are:
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] [name_m]Antony[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
Okay, here we go!
I’m all about trying to do honor initials at least in the middle name spot. [name_f]My[/name_f] most important ones are D, A & P.
I’ll do the top three per gender:
Girls-
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] Aviva-My dad, [name_u]David[/name_u] [name_m]Alan[/name_m], passed away almost five years ago. This combo honors not only his initials, but also my late grandparents, [name_m]Albert[/name_m] & [name_f]Annette[/name_f]. I just love how [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is so cheerful & feels vintage & bright & is my favorite flower. And my dad loved flowers too. [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] is Hebrew for ‘Spring’ and it has an elegant/pixie vibe, which I love.
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] Pearl-Guinevere has been my favorite girl (up until [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] notched her out slightly!) since I heard it in a Death [name_m]Cab[/name_m] for Cutie song when I was seventeen (many moons ago at the turn of the century! ((2001))) It’s the most beautiful bold, feminine, badas* princess vibe. Plus, it’s old fashioned & well known but super unique. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is to honor my grandma, [name_f]Pauline[/name_f], and also, I just love the elegant vintage [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. I would do [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] if I had one girl and used [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] as a first name. I guess I’m giving you my top three per gender assuming they were triplets!
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] Azalea-I really don’t know what sparked my love of [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. I’m Jewish (mainly culturally) but am really drawn to Hebrew names. It’s really sweet & smart, & strong & old fashioned. Well known but not heard too often. [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] is to go with the nature theme in the first or middle name that I like to do if possible, and also it honors [name_m]Albert[/name_m] & [name_f]Annette[/name_f]. Plus, [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] is so pretty & unexpected.
Boys-
[name_u]Julian[/name_u] Dashiell-I can’t remember where I first fell in love with [name_u]Julian[/name_u], but I know it was somewhere around the same time as [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]. It’s charming and smart and kind & a little posh but not too fussy. It’s easy to say & spell, & I don’t hear it terribly often. [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] is handsome & interesting and flows with Julian; but is also a ‘D’ name.
[name_m]Ewan[/name_m] Atlas-I love [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] for similar reasons as [name_u]Julian[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] DH’s family is [name_u]Irish[/name_u], and we have a ‘Mc’ last name, so I think that this would flow nicely. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s Scottish. I like how [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] is kind of exotic and less traditional to compliment the slightly stuffier (yet super sweet) [name_m]Ewan[/name_m].
[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] Peter-I really like [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], but I love [name_m]Peter[/name_m] & would want to honor my Grandma [name_f]Pauline[/name_f], so I’ll use the 'P middle name here. [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is sweet though. I love the peaceful nature-y vibe [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] has. It’s hard to say without a smile.
Thanks for reading this far.
[name_f]My[/name_f] two favorites are
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
[name_u]Tate[/name_u] [name_u]Robbie[/name_u]
For siblings
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] Baleen [name_u]Alba[/name_u]: Alice is a family name on both sides. My mother hates it (it was her middle name) but I love it, the fact that it honors so many important women to me, the literary connection to so many amazing fictional women and so many strong historical figures. Baleen I have always thought would make a cool name ever since I was first learning about baleen whales and they eventually became my great love and what I wrote my thesis on. I love nicknames and was not a fan of the normal ones for Alice so when I figured that I could make Alba work by taking the first part of Alice and the first part of Baleen, I thought it was a perfect match.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_u]Mako[/name_u] [name_u]Eli[/name_u]: Eliza is in honor of my cousin but also because I love the nickname Eli. Mako is in honor of my other cousins who grew up in Japan, my best friend who loves Japan (and refuses any more blatant naming attempts to honor her), karate (one of our school rules is sincerity which is what Mako means in Japanese), and again that connection to sea life via Mako sharks.
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_u]Lupine[/name_u]: Linnea to honor my Swedish heritage and Carl Linnaeus. Also love the floral aspect and the literary connection. Lupine for the floral connection but also the literary connection to Miss Rumphius, the lupine lady. My grandmother used to read me that book so it also honors her.
[name_f]Sonia[/name_f] [name_f]Soleil[/name_f] [name_u]Sunny[/name_u]: Sonia has a great meaning and also lends itself to the nickname Sunny. Soleil just has a lovely meaning and I like the way it sounds with Sonia.
[name_m]Farley[/name_m] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]: Farley is in honor of the ocean conservationist Farley Mowat (who was a man but I love it for a girl). Jean honors all of my grandparents: Dean (my paternal grandmother) and Mary Joan (she pronounces it Joanne, my maternal grandmother) combined. But also my paternal grandfather’s middle name is Eugene and my maternal grandfather was John and the French version of John is Jean. So very big honor name.
[name_f]Sabina[/name_f] Dew: Sabina is used in Sweden and is just a name I love the sound of (but it annoys me that a lot of people will likely think it is Sabrina with a typo). Dew is a nature name but also they were my grandmother’s initials.
[name_m]Granger[/name_m] [name_u]Leo[/name_u]: [name_m]Granger[/name_m] honors a few important Grangers (both real and fictional). [name_u]Leo[/name_u] honors both of my grandfathers.
[name_m]Merrick[/name_m] [name_m]Aurelien[/name_m] [name_u]Mack[/name_u]: [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] honors my mother’s maiden name and lends itself to the nickname [name_u]Mack[/name_u] which I love. [name_m]Aurelien[/name_m] is the masculine form of my great grandmother’s name.
[name_m]Soren[/name_m] [name_m]Jeffrey[/name_m] [name_u]Ren[/name_u]: [name_m]Soren[/name_m] honors my Scandinavian heritage and lends itself to the lovely nickname [name_u]Ren[/name_u]. [name_m]Jeffrey[/name_m] honors my father.
[name_m]Ronan[/name_m] [name_u]Jack[/name_u]: I love the meaning of [name_m]Ronan[/name_m]. It also honors my [name_u]Irish[/name_u] heritage. [name_u]Jack[/name_u] honors both of my grandfathers.
[name_m]Talmadge[/name_m] [name_m]Thor[/name_m]: [name_m]Talmadge[/name_m] is really just a name I love but (this is a stretch) if you split it in two; [name_u]Tal[/name_u] means dew which are my grandmother’s maiden initials, and [name_f]Madge[/name_f] is a nickname for my mother’s full name. [name_m]Thor[/name_m] honors my father.
[name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_u]Otter[/name_u]: [name_m]Otto[/name_m] is just a name I love but I also love the nickname option of [name_u]Otter[/name_u]. [name_m]Evander[/name_m] honors many Ev- family members and my best friend whose name ends in -andra.
Let’s see some of my favorites are:
Girls:
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f] - I know it’s a bit too [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] - even for me (wouldn’t mind it if it wasn’t too tied to JK Rowling), but I view it as my journey into getting connected spiritually and into Wiccan. Not only that, I just love that it gives ‘main character’ vibes.
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_f]Millicent[/name_f] - as I’ve get to learn and explore Wiccan, and polytheists, one of the goddesses that caught my eye is [name_f]Gaia[/name_f], [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] of [name_f]Earth[/name_f], and I just thought she was an awesome deity to be named after.
Boys:
[name_m]Octavian[/name_m] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] - I absolutely love the fall, and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] is after my favorite character from a book series called Chronicles of [name_u]Nick[/name_u].
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] - [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is after the character from Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f], and sort of an unintentional honor name of mine (Teddy.) And [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] bc it’s one of my favorite gemstones.
