What are your favorite names that you aren't able to use or are guilty pleasure?

I need some excitement brought back to my list…
What are some of your favorite names that you can’t use, SO vetoes, or guilty pleasures?

I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f]. Hopefully I can be brave enough to use it as a middle someday, or a first with nn [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. Another I love but wouldn’t saddle a child with, Floralba. It’s not usually recieved well but I love it! Floralba seems like a lush tropical paradise

Most of my GPs are out because they have fundamental flaws, but I love [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] (the character herself wasn’t negative, but it’s the name of a book about a paedophile when it comes down to it) and [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] (‘demon’). [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is my absolute favourite but apparently in the US it’s got a history of racist marketing or something? I don’t know.

I probably wouldn’t use but love…
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]
[name_f]Azalea[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cricket[/name_f]
[name_f]Geraldine[/name_f]
[name_f]Avalon[/name_f]
[name_f]Bibi[/name_f]
[name_f]Monica[/name_f]
[name_f]Jezebel[/name_f]
[name_f]Lotus[/name_f]
[name_u]Jersey[/name_u]
[name_f]Zuzanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Queenie[/name_f]
[name_f]Nayara[/name_f]/[name_f]Naiara[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u]
[name_f]Priya[/name_f]
[name_f]Garland[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ethel[/name_f]
[name_u]Chandler[/name_u]

I have categories, more than actual names themselves:

Rather cutesy word type names:

[name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_f]Posy[/name_f]
[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]/[name_f]Sonata[/name_f]
[name_f]Poet[/name_f]
[name_f]Monet[/name_f]
etc.

I might consider them as middles, but for the most part, they stay GPs for me.

Polish names (I just can’t pull off all the random "Z"s and "J"s!):

Gracja (although I’d consider this, to honor my grandmother, whose mn is [name_f]Grace[/name_f])
Lilija
[name_f]Ariadna[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecylia[/name_f]
[name_m]Eliasz[/name_m]
Jonasz
I also like [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] and [name_m]Ziven[/name_m] ([name_f]ZEE[/name_f]-vehn), and some more classic-type Polish names ([name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_f]Klara[/name_f]), but I don’t know that I would use those, either?

Unisex names (I have a unisex name, and have vowed never to pass down that trend–I have hated feeling like I couldn’t be as feminine as I wanted to be because my name held me back. If my daughter wants a boyish or tomboyish nickname, we’ll find one. But if I have a girl, she’ll have a girls’ name. But oh, how I love these!):

[name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_f]Greer[/name_f] (these are the main ones. I also like [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], etc., though, too)

And one name that doesn’t really fit into any of these categories:

[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f].

le sigh. [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] stunningly beautiful is she? I would consider her, too, if I could find a nn I really liked. The negative [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] associations aren’t great, but I could get over them. The potential teasing isn’t great, but I could get over that, too, if there was a truly great nn for it. But I like absolutely none of the nns for [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. I probably like [name_f]Lia[/name_f] best, but I find the sound of [name_f]Lia[/name_f]/[name_f]Leah[/name_f] to be such a let-down after the lush and romantic and feminine and unexpected and magical [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. le sigh.

I love [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] for a girl along with [name_f]Greer[/name_f] & [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]!!

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]! ::sob:: There are others, but [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is the big one. Our last name starts with [name_m]MAN[/name_m]. I would name a daughter [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] in a heartbeat if I wasn’t afraid of the “hairy man” teasing potential.

I would have to say [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] for me, I love it, but it’s got a negative reminder for my family

Also:

[name_f]Ethel[/name_f] (love this!)
[name_f]Peony[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f] (my cousin’s name)
[name_u]James[/name_u] (see [name_f]Clementine[/name_f])
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f]
Freyja
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]
Illyria/Illaria
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Sonya[/name_f]/[name_f]Sonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Soraya[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] for the potential of [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], but furthermore, I love your actual kids names!!! Adorable!!!

My GPs:

Sophina
[name_f]Avalon[/name_f]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_f]Laure[/name_f] (might use as a mn)
[name_u]Blue[/name_u]

[name_f]Io[/name_f] – (Eye-o). Two letters, two syllables, so much charm (for me). I love this name and am considering it, but it’s definitely more out-there.

I love [name_m]Kensington[/name_m] on a girl! It used to be a very masculine name to me, but after hearing it on the sweetest little girl I love it more on a girl than on a boy. Kensie is a cute nickname too, reminds me of [name_u]Kenzie[/name_u]/[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]. Guilty pleasure because I know how some people are with the boy names on a girl. Bit controversial on such a commonly masculine name.

[name_m]Anderson[/name_m] on a girl was the same thing. It was on my GP list because of it being so masculine and it not even really being heard on a girl but I really loved it. Then I came up with the spelling Andison. The ‘i’ to me makes it feminine and then the cute nickname “[name_f]Andi[/name_f]” was feminine too. Although still technically a boy name, I love it! So it moved off my GP list because the feminine spelling made me braver to use it.

Also love:
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] “[name_u]Rory[/name_u]” ([name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like the Disney connection)
[name_f]Aria[/name_f] (Cousin’s name)
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_m]Benton[/name_m] (Cousin called [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m])
[name_f]Brighton[/name_f]
[name_m]Orlando[/name_m]
[name_m]Gage[/name_m]

The following names are unusable for me as they’ve already been used by family and friends! Names belonging to either mine or my husband’s aunts, uncles, cousins and cousins’ children, and friends (or names too close to theirs)…

[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_m]Beau[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]

[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]! I love love love this name, but I can’t use it. An ex family member was named [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is just too close to it. I think it would offend a lot of relatives if I used the name. :frowning:

My GPs are Irish names. And most of my family would not approve of an Irish name (sadly)

[name_m]Finnigan[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m]
[name_m]Cormac[/name_m]
[name_m]Lochlan[/name_m]

I love them all.

Guilty pleasures:
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Tigerlily[/name_f]
Timberly
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_u]Robin[/name_u]
[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mafalda[/name_f]

GPs:
[name_f]Ofelia[/name_f]- my cat
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] - might actually consider this…
[name_f]Fidelia[/name_f]- a bit out there in my country
[name_f]Anemone[/name_f] -bit too out there
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]- sounds soo much better in Italian
[name_f]Angelina[/name_f] -not working in Swedish
[name_f]Fiorella[/name_f]- too frilly
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]- oh, how I love [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]! [name_m]Just[/name_m] not usable in my language:(
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] - too common:(
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]- ditto
[name_f]Freja[/name_f] -ditto
[name_f]Elysia[/name_f]- might consider it…
Adolfina- obvious reasons (really like [name_m]Adolf[/name_m] as well:()
Göta- not working internationally
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]- might consider
Alvi- ditto
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]- sounds less appealing in Swedish

Oh well.

We’re having a boy and DH is a crazy vetoer ([name_m]Vladimir[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Martin[/name_m], [name_m]Paul[/name_m], [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_m]Etienne[/name_m], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] are out for boys). Names he had pre-vetoed for girls if the little one had been a girl (or names already used by family):
[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] / [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] / [name_f]Mariana[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Roxana[/name_f]
[name_f]Antonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Katarina[/name_f]
[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Diane[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariane[/name_f]
[name_f]Salome[/name_f] (hard to wear, this one, but sounds so beautiful)

Names that are either taken by family & friends or are disliked by my husband:

[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]
[name_m]Louis[/name_m]
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]
[name_u]Finch[/name_u]
[name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m]
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
Minnow
[name_m]Abraham[/name_m]
Marinus / Mariner

[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] will be a middle name for us, it was my grandmas name. I would totally use it as a first name if I wasn’t so worried about the professional aspect that one day she would be an adult that might want to have a more grown up sounding name!

I have a long list…

names that end in “ee” sound. DF’s last name ends in “ee” so they sound kind of dumb.

  • [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Evadne[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] (I also have an ex Arialdy so that’s a bit too similar on that front as well)
  • [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (he also had a girl that was obsessed with him in HS named [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] so he wouldn’t consider it)

Names that are too short as a full name for me to actually use.

  • [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Etta[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Odette[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]

Too close to my kids’ names

  • [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] (would have been [name_m]Donovon[/name_m]'s name)
  • [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] (contender for [name_m]Donovon[/name_m] as well)
  • [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] (I think it sounds too similar to [name_m]Donovon[/name_m] out loud)

He hates:

  • [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Millicent[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]

Other:

  • [name_f]Odessa[/name_f] (small town close by)
  • [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f] (family name used too much to use as a first name, is a contender for a middle if we have 2 more dd’s)
  • [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Petunia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Fiorella[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] (cousin named this)
  • [name_f]Liora[/name_f] (I have an aunt named [name_f]Leota[/name_f], pronounced lee-oh-ta so it’s too close)
