What are your favorite winter names?

Another post got me thinking. We’re all used to [name]Holly[/name], [name]Natalie[/name] and [name]Noelle[/name] for [name]December[/name] babies, and [name]Winter[/name] and [name]Snow[/name] have come up quite a bit on NB lately. What other winter/holiday words could work as names?

[name]Star[/name]
[name]Pine[/name]
Halo
[name]Frost[/name]
[name]Merry[/name]
Myrrh
Nutmeg
[name]Vesper[/name]
[name]Belle[/name] (like jingle bells, but not)

What about winter birds? Obviously this could vary based on your location. The more appealing ones where I live:

Bluebird
Bunting
[name]Dove[/name]
[name]Finch[/name]
[name]Sparrow[/name]
[name]Starling[/name]
[name]Wren[/name]

[name]Natasha[/name]
Noelie
Lumi
[name]Eira[/name]
[name]Robin[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Lucia[/name]
[name]Tindra[/name]
Twinkle

Ooh, I like [name]Tindra[/name] and I’d never have thought of Twinkle! It’s funny - I’d never really associated [name]Ivy[/name] with [name]Christmas[/name]/winter, but it seems that most people do.

[name]Neige[/name] - snow in French but is also considered a name
[name]Gaspard[/name] - one of the three wisemen

Yeah, me either. But there’s a christmas song called “The [name]Holly[/name] & the [name]Ivy[/name]”, so that’s the reason for me, not the plant.

I love [name]Christmas[/name] carols, so I say [name]Carol[/name]

Other carol-y names could be [name]Rudolph[/name], Wenceslas, [name]Feliz[/name], Frosty, [name]Nicholas[/name], [name]Plum[/name], [name]Bright[/name] or [name]Drummond[/name].

[name]Miracle[/name] could also be a pretty [name]Christmas[/name] name.

[name]Gloria[/name] & [name]Ivy[/name]

[name]Ever/name
[name]Tannen/name
[name]Macy[/name]- I always think of [name]Macy[/name]'s as a [name]Christmas[/name] store
[name]Lucia[/name]- my childhood best friend was Swedish and celebrated [name]Santa[/name] [name]Lucia[/name] [name]Day[/name]
[name]Caspar[/name]/[name]Jasper[/name]/[name]Gaspar[/name] and [name]Balthasar[/name]- the [name]Magi[/name]
[name]Holly[/name] & [name]Ivy[/name]- love that song
[name]East[/name]/[name]Easton[/name]
Names that mean red- [name]Scarlett[/name], [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Garnet[/name], [name]Russell[/name], [name]Russet[/name], [name]Rufus[/name], [name]Robin[/name], [name]Auburn[/name]
[name]Ember[/name]
[name]Blaise[/name]

[name]Francesca[/name] or [name]Frank[/name] (frankincense)
[name]Hayley[/name] (hail)

[name]January[/name], [name]Lumina[/name], Lumi, Lumen, [name]Lucille[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Robin[/name], [name]Holly[/name], [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Gloria[/name], [name]Eira[/name], [name]Nevada[/name], [name]Gwendolyn[/name], [name]Snejana[/name], Rinretsu, [name]Hoshiko[/name], [name]Arianwen [/name], [name]Gwyneira[/name], [name]Oriana[/name], [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Nova[/name], [name]Myra[/name], Épiphanie, [name]Belle[/name], [name]Noelle[/name], [name]Carole[/name], [name]Merry[/name], [name]Mary[/name]…

[name]Joseph[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Forrest[/name], [name]Spruce[/name], [name]Cedar[/name], [name]Sirius[/name], [name]Odin[/name], [name]Oren[/name], [name]Ori[/name], [name]Saturn[/name], [name]Nicholas[/name], [name]Frost[/name], [name]December[/name], [name]Xavier[/name], Fannar

Ooh, [name]Ever[/name], [name]Tannen[/name], & [name]Ember[/name].

I would’ve never thought of [name]Francesca[/name]/[name]Frank[/name], but you’re so right (I guess Frankincense would be taking things a bit far, eh?)!

[name]Love[/name] the light & month names! [name]Spruce[/name] and [name]Cedar[/name] are cool too

Loving your carol inspiration!

[name]Gloria[/name] is brilliant!

I think Nutmeg is ridiculously cute, but most people would probably laugh at it. =(
Cardinal, [name]Timber[/name], [name]Garland[/name] and [name]North[/name] come to mind for boys, [name]Frostine[/name], [name]Emmanuelle[/name] and Rudolpha for girls.

Wow, [name]Frostine[/name] is new to me and I don’t think I knew there was a feminization of [name]Rudolph[/name] either. I keep forgetting about [name]North[/name] - need to add that to my lists.

I am oddly fond of [name]December[/name] and of [name]August[/name] for boys… as an American emigrated to [name]Oz[/name], either could be wintry depending on your hemisphere. Though 26 years in the US means I think of [name]December[/name] first and [name]August[/name] as oh yeah that too.

Girls:
[name]Winter[/name]
[name]Gwyneira[/name], which means “white snow” and Eirwen “snow, white”
Birthstones: my favourite for winter are [name]Topaz[/name] and [name]Amethyst[/name] in the Northern hemisphere, or [name]Peridot[/name] in [name]Oz[/name]. I have known a beautiful girl named [name]Topaz[/name].
Peppermint is a guilty pleasure.
As is [name]Cinnamon[/name], though I have known Cinnamons who wore it well. [name]Cassia[/name] is probably better or at least less guilty than [name]Cinnamon[/name].
The through-the-snow winter flowers of back home in Pennsylvania: [name]Snowdrop[/name], [name]Primrose[/name].
The [name]Christmas[/name] flowers old-fashioned people force in vases and others buy at the florist: [name]Amaryllis[/name], [name]Hyacinth[/name]/[name]Jacinta[/name], [name]Camellia[/name], the “[name]Christmas[/name] rose” that isn’t a rose at all but a hellebore. I wouldn’t recommend Hellebore as a name though.
Khione/Chione- Greek goddess of snow.
[name]Isolde[/name] - sometimes translated as ‘ice battle’ or ‘ice ruler.’

My favourite “winter” birds make terrible names, would anyone want to be Chickadee or Ptarmigan? They are adorable though.

Boys
Hemlock - it’s an attractive evergreen tree, very much a wintry-type conifer. It is poisonous though.
[name]Douglas[/name] - as in the fir.
[name]Oren[/name] - means ‘pine’
[name]Forest[/name] - Yes I am still thinking dark green trees.
Aquilon - [name]Roman[/name] god of the north wind.
Boreas - the Greek god related to Aquilon.
[name]Garnet[/name] - [name]January[/name] birthstone. I could see this one working on a boy.

[name]Vesper[/name] sounds awesome. But what does it have to do with [name]Winter[/name]? I also think [name]Wynter[/name] sounds nice. Depends though. More of a GP…

[name]Amaryllis[/name], [name]Christabel[/name] and [name]Holly[/name].

I’m so in love with these names right now:

[name]January[/name]
[name]Winter[/name]
[name]Snow[/name]
[name]Merry[/name] (though I think I’d name her [name]Meredith[/name] or [name]Merida[/name] and call her [name]Merry[/name])

[name]Ever[/name]
[name]Plum[/name]
[name]Noella[/name]
[name]Glory[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Vespera[/name]
[name]Merry[/name]
Mirth
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Holly[/name]
[name]Afton[/name] (not sure why, but it seems very winter to me)

I think most people associate it, not for its literal meaning, but because of [name]Vesper[/name] Services at [name]Christmas[/name]
