There are only a couple “popular” names that I dislike at the moment: [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (my love-hate relationship with my full name is at the ‘hate’ side at the moment) [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (I actually think it’s really pretty, but the double r’s are impossible to say) [name_f]Ella[/name_f] and [name_u]Liam[/name_u], just because of personal associations (nothing against the names themselves) and [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] and [name_u]Milo[/name_u] because they just sound like dog names to me, imho.
I’m probably already bugging everyone with this, but the name [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] is very popular in my country, and I just don’t get it. I hear it so often that it only irritates me.
A lot of feminizations of established male names, ex: Josephine, Olivia, Charlotte, Alexandra, Georgia, Theodora, Erica, Louise / Louisa, Maxine, Paula, Simone, Stephanie, Danielle / Daniella, Nicole, Christina, Adrienne, etc.
edit to clarify: I don’t hate these names, I just don’t get the appeal and can’t see myself using any of them.
I’m not a fan of [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] or [name_u]Rory[/name_u] at all. The double R is just too mumbly to me and doesn’t sound nice or feel nice to say. Another one is [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] - I used to like it but my SO pointed out it sounds like “I’ll rail ya” and now I can’t unhear it. I also don’t like [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] at all because it just reminds me of papi or a name for a grandpa. Same with [name_m]Graham[/name_m] - just sounds like [name_m]Gram[/name_m], like what someone would call their Grandma. Actually, funny story, one day I was talking to a little girl and she was talking about playing with “Gram” and I thought she was talking about her grandmother until at some point in the conversation we both got very confused and she had to clarify she had been talking about a boy in her class named [name_m]Graham[/name_m] all along. Another one is [name_u]Harry[/name_u] - just reminds me of hairy which weirds me out.
Yes, all of them went by [name_f]Nastya[/name_f], so we just said Nastya+surname when addressing someone. We actually had also two Marias (one of them went by pseudonym), three Annas and one [name_f]Ani[/name_f] etc, so this was fun
I don’t really hate names…they can be not my style, that list would be long, but that’s often the extent of my dislike. Can’t think of any I outright hate at the minute.
I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I find them disgusting. Popular names are popular for a reason and I can see why so many parents choose them. You’re absolutely right though, there are names that we just don’t like!
Popular as in Top 10:
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
[name_u]Liam[/name_u]
[name_u]Noah[/name_u]
I’m increasingly disliking [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], too. I just find these names tiresome and screechy. I feel bad saying that but that’s what comes to mind.
Otherwise popular:
[name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] and variants
[name_m]Brantley[/name_m]
Blakely/Blakelie
[name_u]Ryder[/name_u]
Harley/Harlan
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]
harlow
Hazelee
[name_u]Ezra[/name_u] on a girl
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
Etc…
I don’t have concrete reasons for all of them. Some are because of a number of kids I know with the name. Some I just don’t like the sound of. Others are just soooo common that I’m tired of them.
[name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], and [name_f]Ella[/name_f] are just a few of my least favorites.
[name_f]Emily[/name_f]: It looks strange to me, with the ily that has one L. [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is a cute nickname, though.
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f]: Wayyyy too popular and frant quite boring. If I had to choose a variant, it would be [name_f]Sofia[/name_f].
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]: I don’t see how anyone finds anything special about this name. It’s plain.
No offense to anybody with these names or who loves these names! [name_m]Just[/name_m] sharing my opinion🧡
(I also dislike [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] as @sandpiper mentioned)
[name_u]Noah[/name_u] - I kind of get the hype but I just hear “know a” and it sounds awkward to me
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - not a fan, don’t get the hype
[name_u]Jack[/name_u] - sounds too hard for my liking and I don’t like the various other meanings
[name_u]Alfie[/name_u] - too cute sounding
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - same as [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - I find it boring and overdone, plus I don’t like [name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] - something that pops?
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] - ok as a nickname but too cute as a full name
i wouldn’t say that these name’s are disgusting, they just aren’t my personal taste.
not that it’s popular in real life, but i just can’t like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] or [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. they both have been used for such unpleasant characters and just feel wrong to me.
I don’t despise it, but Ava is probably my least favourite name. I find the sound really unattractive.
I also really, really don’t get Genesis (which is popular in the US). Not only does it sound like genocide, but the bible book you’re naming your kid after literally just translates to “birth” in the language that the word “genesis” was taken from. And Gen/Jen is a rather dated nickname, so overall, not my thing!
Athena
Ophelia
Willow
Sage
Jade
Jules
Taylor
Quinn
Bella
Isla
Imogene
Finley
Luna
Rory
Aurora (I have special distaste for this one.)
Arabella (not because I hate the name, instead, I hate how everyone seems to be clinging to it just for the Arctic Monkeys reference. It’s way too obvious.)
Overall, I hate these new very trendy names that just seem so “of-the-times.” The next generation will be filled of Athena’s, like how there are thousands of Emma’s or Olivia’s. I think everybody thinks they are choosing a truly unique name, but you can’t go two seconds without seeing a fellow Gen Z claiming that their first daughter will be named Athena Sage (or some variant). Wow, okay, my rant is over now.
