Hello berries!
I’m new to this forum here. And we are expecting our second in [name]April[/name]. We are actively looking for names!!!
I have a “new name” for you I really really like.
[name]LEONIE[/name]
What are your opinions about it? Too international? [name]How[/name] do you pronounce it? (leh-O-nee, [name]LAY[/name]-o-nee or [name]LEE[/name]-o-nee)
I saw it was in the Top 1000 between 1880 – 1907. Is it ready to use it in the USA again?
I love the sound and how it looks… But what kind of little girl do you picture with this name?
[name]One[/name] of the reasons I want to use [name]Leonie[/name] is because it is a very common name in Germany - where I’m from – so it will be easier for my family (mom, dad, grandparents etc.) to pronounce it (some of my family even pronounces [name]Julian[/name] german which is YOO-lee-ahn then. [name]Even[/name] though we corrected them all the time – but it doesn’t bother me too much would be worse if I had to correct more people over here) And it’s very uncommon in the US - another bonus!
([name]Leonie[/name] is in [name]German[/name] Name Lists since 1978 and since 1991 in the Top100)
Thank you so very much and all comments will be appreciatet.
I’d guess it is pronounced lee-O-nee, but I have no idea. I like it, though! It’s different, but not weird and off the wall. Easy to spell, which is a plus. Not so easy to pronounce, which could get frustrating for you over time. Similar suggestions: [name]Leora[/name], and [name]Liane[/name] (pronounced lee-AW-nee…another one with pronunciation problems though).
I knew a [name]Leonie[/name]! She was Swiss and although she was a [name]German[/name] speaker she used a French influenced prn (but I imagine [name]German[/name] would be similar) - lay-oh-NEE. I would say that or if I was being American in my accent, lee-OH-nee probably, maybe [name]LEE[/name] oh nee. I like it!
This is one of my closest friend’s mum’s name, and I’m rather close with her too. Because of that, I pronounce it [name]Lee[/name]-oh-nee and cannot picture it on a little girl as it sounds very middle-age to my ears. Good luck!
I really like this name a lot and think it very usable in the US. I would pronounce it lee-oh-nee on my own, but could easily transition to lay-oh-nee if that was how others introduced her.
I have never heard of it before but it is very beautiful. I don’t think it seems too international at all, just quite exotic in a lovely way.
I think the spelling is straightforward and I doubt that you would have any extreme issues of having to correct people on more than just a slight pronunciation difference. My first instincts would be to assume it was pronounced [name]Lee[/name]-oh-nee (like the start of [name]Leonardo[/name] with ‘knee’ at the end) but I could easily see it being [name]Lay[/name]-oh-nee in many other dialects, and would find that pretty as well. =]
My husband loves this name, his parents are both from [name]Holland[/name], it is also common there.
We pronounce it [name]Lee[/name] oh nee and are considering it as middle, we think it sounds beautiful. It has no less pronounciation issues than any other names below the top 1000 in my opinion.
Hello! Thank you very much for your replies. I’m really happy that it has so much positive feedback!
Now it’s time to introduce it to my hubby and convince that this is “the name” if we should have a girl… lol
Wish me luck berries!!!
