What are your thoughts on Bronte?

Recently, I’ve been thinking of [name]Bronte[/name] for a girl. What do you think? My only reservation is that [name]Bronte[/name] sounds rather harsh, but paired with an ultra feminine middle name I think it would be lovely.

I like it!

I love love love [name]Bronte[/name] although I prefer it as MN. It reminds me of [name]Bronte[/name] sisters.

I can see the attraction but i always thought it sounded like a boys name, sorry.

I love it! I think the literary association is great. I slightly prefer [name]Monet[/name], but I do like [name]Bronte[/name], as well.

I think it sounds really pretentious. Like naming your kid [name]Shakespeare[/name] or something.

I like it as a MN.

I like it but it does seem a little pretentious and there are not any great NNs for it. It also kind of seems like a creative way to get to the overly popular surname craze!

To be perfectly honest, to me [name]Bronte[/name] says, “I had to read Wuthering Heights in high school and kinda liked it, and I want people to think I’m literary.” I don’t mean to imply that that’s the case with you, but that’s the first thought that would pop into my mind. I feel the same way about the names [name]Harper[/name], [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Scout[/name]. They just seem to shout, “I read a big-kid book once!”

Also: brontosaurus.

Bronchitis.

[name]Bronte[/name]-sauris. Kids are cruel.

I know a little [name]Bronte[/name] (prn like the [name]Bronte[/name] sisters) and she’s adorable, I don’t think it’s that pretentious, maybe it’s because brontes mom is a heavily tattooed alternative model and not a literary snob (thats sort of OT but i guess im saying i think anyone could use this name not just hipster parents).

I like it and would use it if it were my style! I also find it to be pretty feminine

I love it as a middle name, but I don’t know how well it would do for a first name. I’ve wrestled with this one myself, but, as a pp suggested, I just shudder at the “bronte-saurus” jokes that would inevitably happen. I know kids are gonna get teased anyway, but us name choosers can make it a little easier on them. That being said, I still think it is beautiful, a way to give a nod to a great trio or authoresses, and would make a lovely middle name.

I have to say I agree with holey. For example, my first reaction when I heard that the [name]Willis[/name] kid was named [name]Rumer[/name] – when I knew her and knew she hated her name, that she used it only for a publishing name – was really? So you saw [name]Black[/name] [name]Narcissus[/name] and Coppola told you you should like it?

I feel the same way about people who use [name]Harper[/name] – she goes by [name]Nelle[/name] – or my cousin’s name [name]Dashiell[/name] (and then pronounce it incorrectly, and anyway, he went by [name]Sam[/name]). So are you pronouncing [name]Bronte[/name] the American way or the correct way (Brunty)?
Honestly, since the [name]Bronte[/name] sisters were [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Emily[/name], and [name]Anne[/name], which were all lovely names, I wonder what the point of using [name]Bronte[/name] for a girl. I suppose, if you wanted to be really clever, you could name her Currer, [name]Acton[/name], or [name]Ellis[/name], any of which would be better than [name]Bronte[/name], I think.

I actually like it, but I can’t picture it on a baby. I can only picture it on a girl from middle school up, for some reason.

Sounds a little harsh, and I wasn’t quite sure how to pronounce it. I’m sure it could grow on me though… and honestly I would love the nn Brontosaurus, that’s awesome, haha.

Second this!

My associations are 1) [name]Andie[/name] MacDowell’s character in the movie, [name]Green[/name] [name]Card[/name] and 2) Gotye’s song, [name]Bronte[/name] (see Gotye - Bronte (Official Music Video) - YouTube ) – in addition to the literary associations so I have some pretty positive thoughts about it. If the potential pretentiousness bothers you, I’d humbly suggest at least keeping it for the middle spot. It’s really quite lovely.

I love it… we have a [name]Bronte[/name] at play group who is a little cutie, her mum calls her Boo for short. So it has good associations for me.

I love it!! What are you thinking for a middle name? Something very girly would be perfect!
