What are your thoughts on the name Eden? Too religious? Too trendy?

I’ve wavered back and forth for several years about the name [name]Eden[/name] (nn [name]Edie[/name]). I realize it was originally a boy’s name first, but it feels so feminine, beautiful and soothing to me. From the name snobs that normally fish around Y!A, they usually either say it’s too trendy or it’s too religious. While I’m usually not big on caring what other people think, I very much care about names as it follows a person throughout their life. Therefore, these two criticisms of the name have influenced me to keep it off my list.

I normally like names a little spunky yet more classic (as you’ll see in my signature). I even like super classic names not listed like [name]Catherine[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name]. We ALMOST named our daughter [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Elise[/name] or [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Eloise[/name], but my husband knew too many Catherines and was turned off by that. Regardless, I adore our daughter’s name and it reflects our style pretty well. I don’t feel like our taste is trendy; when I think of trendy, I think of either super popular names like [name]Ava[/name], [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name] or the masculine names on girls ([name]Addison[/name], [name]Hunter[/name], [name]Riley[/name]) or those -lynn names. Does [name]Eden[/name] really fall into one of those categories? I guess it could fit into the masculine names on girls, but I honestly don’t think the average person has any clue that [name]Eden[/name] used to be a male name.

Now the religious aspect - I am not religious at all. I’m not against it or anything like that - I’m just not and because of that I would find it uncomfortable to have a daughter’s name be seen as a religious one.

So, what are your thoughts on the name [name]Eden[/name] for a girl?

I think [name]Eden[/name] feels kind of vintagey, in a way; maybe its similarity to [name]Edith[/name] contributes to that. And, personally, I don’t mind religious names at all. In fact, I love them. I think religious names are something personal, and if you don’t mind them, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. It’s your decision. I think [name]Eden[/name] would vary, some people seeing it as religious and others not.

And, just as a thought, I think it would make the problem of it being possibly too religious and possibly too masculine lesser if you double-barreled it, like [name]Eden[/name] [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Eden[/name]-[name]Rose[/name].

[name]Eden[/name]-[name]Marie[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]-[name]Estelle[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]-[name]May[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]-[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]-[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]-[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]-[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]-[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]-[name]Olive[/name]

It’s pretty… I think you should use it… [name]Eden[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] are cute together

I like it a lot. I know a young [name]Eden[/name], and on her it seems trendy- not religious.

I like [name]Eden[/name].

I think the biblical association gives the name history and weight, but I don’t actually think of it as a ‘religious’ name. It’s a fun name, but not flimsy. While it’s not super popular top 10 (like [name]Ava[/name] or [name]Sophia[/name]), the style of name IS a bit trendy. However, I would not let that stop you from using it…I think it has a classic feel that will age well, and compliments [name]Nora[/name] so nicely!

I like the name [name]Eden[/name] but I do find it religious. Similar to [name]Adam[/name] and [name]Eve[/name].

I’m not religious, either, and although I do recognize that [name]Eden[/name] has biblical connotations it doesn’t scream ‘religious name’ at me. I actually associate it with more generic images of gardens, nature, and femininity. The sound of the name is definitely popular right now, but I don’t think [name]Eden[/name] itself is particularly trendy. Right now, trendy is the Ellas and Emmas and Avas. If you love it, go for it!

I really dislike it. It lacks substance to me. I know a couple of baby Edens (Yeah, I was surprised too) and it just doesn’t work for me. Vowel-y girl names are a thing and -den names are a thing for both genders and I see why a lot of people like [name]Eden[/name] but it just feels a bit of nothingness to me.

Your daughter’s name is beautiful to me. [name]Eden[/name] doesn’t compare.

I’m sorry to be the only downer on your thread but it reads very strippery to me… garden of pleasure? Skeevy. I’d stick with [name]Edith[/name].

[name]Eden[/name] was my DH’s number one choice when I was pregnant with our son. [name]Even[/name] though [name]Eden[/name] was originally a boy name, it feels all girl to me. It doesn’t scream Bible to me, but it is definitely trendy. I like it, but I prefer [name]Edith[/name] overall with nn [name]Edie[/name].

Simple and sweet… I love it

I have the same exact problem - I love the sound of [name]Eden[/name] and the nickname “[name]Edie[/name]” but the fact that it’s not as “classic” per say as my other favorite names turns me off. I’m trying to like the name [name]Edith[/name] because it has more history and the same adorable nickname, but the sound of [name]Eden[/name] definitely appeals to me more. I think it’s one of those names that isn’t really trashy but isn’t really very classy either. I would use it in the middle spot to spice a more classic name up, like [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Eden[/name] or something. It doesn’t seem too religious to me because so many names are biblical yet people have totally forgotten their religious roots. But that’s just me

I really like it
It’s always a female name for me. I think [name]Eden[/name] is a bit trendy (but definitely not too trendy), religious but not too religious.

I am currently teaching an [name]Eden[/name] nn [name]Eadie[/name]. She is just adorable in every way. It has made me really like the name.
I personally don’t think of the religious aspect at all.

I don’t think [name]Eden[/name] screams religious. It is unisex and I like it for both boys and girls. It doesn’t have a feminine sound to me but I think most consider it a girl name

[name]Nora[/name] & [name]Eden[/name] make a nice pair.
