Most of my favourite names in my signature are after literary characters, haha. These are the ones I could see myself actually using one day:
[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]/[name_u]Darcy[/name_u]- Pride and Prejudice
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]- Twelfth [name_m]Night[/name_m]; A Perfect Gentle [name_m]Knight[/name_m]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]: A Perfect Gentle [name_m]Knight[/name_m]; mentioned in [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]: Pride and Prejudice
[name_f]Portia[/name_f]: The Merchant of [name_f]Venice[/name_f]
There are lots of character names that I like such as [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] (from [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] Twist), [name_f]Briony[/name_f] (Atonement), [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] (Hunger Games), [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] (A Great and Terrible Beauty) to name a few. But as for naming a child after the character specifically I can name only two. If I had the guts I would totally name a child after [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m]. I think she is such a great character who embodies so many qualities that I’d want for my child. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite name right now ([name_f]Eliza[/name_f]) is actually after the main character of my favorite book The Forgotten Garden. I really admired her independence and loyalty and her big imagination.
These are names I’ve picked up from books I’ve read. I wouldn’t necessarily name kids specifically after these characters, but in general the character inspired my love/admiration for a name I might not have otherwise considered.
Elinor: Sense and Sensibility.
Ira: The Wind on Fire (trilogy).
Scarlett: Gone With the Wind.
Melanie: ‘’ ‘’
Mary: The Secret Garden.
Clover: What Katy Did (trilogy).
Lyra: His Dark Materials (trilogy).
Iris: Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.
Max: The Book Thief.
August: Spring Moon.
Rhett: Gone With the Wind.
Liir: Son of a Witch.
@[name_u]Ren[/name_u]- Yay, someone else who loves [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] (and GWTW)! I love the character (and most of the others in the book) deeply, almost as if she were a person I knew… it’s actually kind of embarrassing… Much as I recognize and admire her strengths though, she’s got some huge flaws too that make me question if I would really want to use the name on a child. Also, she’s a pretty polarizing figure, it seems people either love or hate her.
Yeah, I’ve noticed this too regarding polarisation of [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]-liking I’ve read it through… three (?)… times now and I still love it. It’s possibly my favourite of my favourite books
I love that [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] is truly flawed*, it’s what makes her actions so fascinating and she wouldn’t be nearly as strong or as savvy without them. In fact, all of the characters in GWtW have their own complex issues which is probably what makes it such a feast to read. They’re so multi layered I feel like I noticed something new in every read through.
And… no stereotypical happy ending! It’s uplifting, certainly, but far from happy. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it
*Not just some garbage like ‘oh she was a bit clumsy’ and that’s it.
For me, [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]'s flaws are what make me love her–she’s gritty and real. That doesn’t mean I’d want to be exactly like her or that I think her flaws are good, but they do make her incredibly human and relatable.
A lot of my favorite names are ones that I first heard in books, and have positive character associations, but as for specific characters I’d name my kids after directly…not many. They’ve got to have names I love, and be characters I love.
Serious contenders:
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] ([name_f]Sara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_m]Bradshaw[/name_m], [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] Have I Loved)
[name_f]Anne[/name_f] ([name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Shirley[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables)
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] ([name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] of [name_m]York[/name_m], [name_m]Ivanhoe[/name_m])
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] (The Iliad)
[name_m]Erik[/name_m] ([name_m]Erik[/name_m] Lehnsherr/Magneto, X-Men comics)
More GP-type things
Theoden and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] ([name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings)
[name_m]Remus[/name_m] ([name_m]Remus[/name_m] Lupin, [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m])
[name_f]Andromache[/name_f] (The Iliad)
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] is the single reason I’m in love with the name. I’d use [name_f]Viola[/name_f] too, entirely after the after the character (she was one of few admirable female Shakespearean characters) if only I loved the name enough. And [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_u]Robin[/name_u] from [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] The Pooh was a pretty lovely character, if I remember well?
With others, I love the name itself and literary reference, but the characters aren’t my favourite. [name_m]Rhett[/name_m], [name_f]Titania[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_f]Estella[/name_f] (I fell in love with this whilst reading GE, shame she’s such a cow!)
[name_f]My[/name_f] dad wanted to name me [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] with O’[name_f]Hara[/name_f] in mind but my mum didn’t feel it was appropriate for her baby girl haha. I was born with red hair too, it must have killed him!
One character I would name my child after is [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]. Those books changed my life and [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] changed me as a person, so I would name my son [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] after him (it is pretty low on my list since [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] is pretty out there).
I wouldn’t necessary say I would name my kids after these characters, but they do share names. I don’t love the name because of the character, nor did the character change my life, I just love the name and have read books with characters with these names.
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] (PJO/THL)
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] ([name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland)
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] (American Girl books, back in the days)
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] ([name_f]Coraline[/name_f])
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] (Infernal Devices)
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] (Starcrossed)
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] (Divergent)
[name_m]Jason[/name_m] (PJO/TLH)
[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (The Fault in Our Stars)
[name_m]Charles[/name_m] (PJO)
[name_m]Leo[/name_m] (PJO/TLH)
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] (PJO)
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] (Twilight)
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland
[name_f]Wendy[/name_f] [name_f]Moira[/name_f] [name_f]Angela[/name_f] - [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Pan[/name_m]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] - [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] - I Capture the Castle
[name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] - [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - The Once and [name_u]Future[/name_u] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] - The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden
[name_m]Lysander[/name_m], [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m] - [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m], (the Bull)
Great question! I’ve thought about this a few times before, I’m sure there are more, I just can’t think of any at the moment. I doubt I would have the guts to use most of these names on an actual child, but I would at least consider:
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]: Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabeth[/name_f]: [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]: Gone with the Wind
[name_f]Ginny[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]: [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]: [name_m]Harry[/name_m] potter
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]: To Kill A Mockingbird
[name_u]Scout[/name_u]: To Kill A Mockingbird
Interesting thread some of these names I love but don’t know I would have the guts to use some them when I have kids.
[name_m]Cato[/name_m]: Hunger Games
Finnick: Hunger Games
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]: Hunger Games
[name_f]Primrose[/name_f]: Huner Games
[name_m]Harry[/name_m]: [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]: [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]: To Kill A Mockingbird
Lots of people listing [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Green[/name_u] names, all lovely names yes, but still very weird to me since none of them are great characters, nor are they particularly well-written or even vaguely interesting. (Sorry, indulgent book criticism, I’ll leave now).
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]–[name_m]Dante[/name_m]'s Purgatorio; [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] About Nothing

[name_f]Elinor[/name_f]–[name_u]Austen[/name_u]‘s Sense and Sensibility
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]–[name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]‘s As You Like It
[name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_m]Cedric[/name_m], [name_m]Remus[/name_m]–[name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]
[name_m]Becket[/name_m]–Murder in the Cathedral

[name_m]Peter[/name_m]–[name_f]Narnia[/name_f], [name_m]Lord[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m] Wimsey mysteries
