What do we think of Brea?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] came across this name recently and I can’t decide what I think about it. My initial feeling is I like it, but I’m hesitating for some reason. Thoughts?

Also, [name_f]Bria[/name_f] vs [name_f]Brea[/name_f]–which do you prefer? My half brother’s name is [name_m]Brian[/name_m] (we didn’t grow up together and aren’t super close), so I lean toward [name_f]Brea[/name_f] because it reminds me less of his name. Lol

What style of name would you pair with it for a middle?

[name_m]How[/name_m] is [name_f]Brea[/name_f] said? My first thought is [name_f]Bree[/name_f], as it would rhyme with flea, tea, etc. But then you compared it to [name_f]Bria[/name_f] which I would assume is bri-ah. If they are both bri-ah, I prefer [name_f]Bria[/name_f] for the mere easiness of it.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there. I grew up with a “[name_f]Bria[/name_f]” and do know that a few times she was called “[name_m]Brian[/name_m]” inadvertently, so I think that your spelling would certainly avoid any of that confusion. Personally I always loved the name, exotic-sounding and she was the only girl with the name wherever she went (Which was super nice in school etc!) As far as middle names go for [name_f]Brea[/name_f], I personally love jewel and gemstone names.
[name_f]Brea[/name_f] [name_f]Jade[/name_f]
[name_f]Brea[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Brea[/name_f] [name_f]Sapphire[/name_f]
… her middle name is not a gemstone, but we always talked about how cool it would be to be a [name_f]Brea[/name_f] [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] or [name_f]Brea[/name_f] [name_f]Topaz[/name_f], especially with her last name, it went really well! Overall I really loved this name and it really has a lot of personality!

@vera.valentine I was thinking [name_f]Bree[/name_f]-uh, but I could definitely see people pronouncing it like [name_f]Bree[/name_f], which I also like, so that doesn’t bother me too terribly much.

Not a huge fan. The pronunciation is confusing, It could be bree-ah, bree or bray-ah. I prefer [name_f]Bree[/name_f] and [name_f]Briar[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Brea[/name_f] but prefer [name_f]Bria[/name_f] for its simplicity. [name_f]Cambria[/name_f] is also nice if you wanted a longer form that is more obvious. I’ve seen [name_f]Cambree[/name_f] before somewhere too, and of course, the [name_f]Breanna[/name_f]/Briannas. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a thought.

I like it and love @lilimorgana’s suggestion of [name_f]Cambria[/name_f] (also it wouldn’t look like a possible nod to the name [name_m]Brian[/name_m]) and you would get the nickname [name_f]Bria[/name_f]. I prefer the [name_f]Bria[/name_f] spelling.

For the pronunciation of [name_f]Bree[/name_f]-ah, I’d go with [name_f]Bria[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though [name_f]Brea[/name_f] seems more intuitive, I think [name_f]Bria[/name_f] being more common will help people pronounce it.

I prefer [name_f]Bria[/name_f], but that’s just because I know a girl who spells it like that. It’s a beautiful name, and I think I would go with a longer name (along the lines of [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], and [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]) for the middle. However, short names can work too, and the [name_f]Bria[/name_f] I know has a one-syllable name as her middle.

I thought the pronunciation was bray-uh, like the La [name_f]Brea[/name_f] Tar Pits, until you starting comparing to [name_f]Bria[/name_f], which I’d pronounce bree-uh. I personally prefer [name_f]Bria[/name_f] since the pronunciation is more clear, and isn’t reminiscent of tar.

As for middles, I’d go for something longer & classic.

Brea is lovely! I do prefer [name_f]Bria[/name_f] as it’s the spelling I’m more familiar with, but [name_f]Brea[/name_f] is nice as well!

It can be pronounced that way, apparently, but I was going by Nameberry’s description of it being a spelling variation of [name_f]Bria[/name_f]. :person_shrugging:

I agree that the [name_f]Bria[/name_f] spelling makes the pronunciation more intuitive. I live near a town called [name_f]Brea[/name_f] pronounced [name_u]Bray[/name_u]-uh, so initially that’s what I thought this post was going to be about - [name_f]Bree[/name_f]-ah ([name_f]Bria[/name_f]) versus [name_u]Bray[/name_u]-uh ([name_f]Brea[/name_f]). I like the other suggestion of [name_f]Cambria[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bria[/name_f], but I also like [name_f]Bria[/name_f] stand alone.

I much prefer the [name_f]Bria[/name_f] spelling but [name_f]Brea[/name_f] is a sweet and charming name

I like the [name_u]Bray[/name_u]-uh pronunciation, but was unaware of it when I posted this. I was going by Nameberry’s description of [name_f]Brea[/name_f] being a spelling variation of [name_f]Bria[/name_f], which would lead one to believe they are pronounced the same. :person_shrugging:

Love this name, it’s on my girls lists. I think it’s nice and simple with an exotic twist but easy to say. Personally I pronounce it “bree-uh”, but spelt [name_f]Bria[/name_f] instead. [name_f]My[/name_f] mind automatically goes to the “bray-uh” pronunciation when I look at [name_f]Brea[/name_f] spelling

Yea, the last three or four people who posted have mentioned the bray-uh pronunciation. I wasn’t aware of that pronunciation when I posted this and I can’t edit the original post to reflect the new knowledge. Nameberry’s description of [name_f]Brea[/name_f] says it’s a spelling variant of [name_f]Bria[/name_f] or short for [name_f]Breana[/name_f]/Briana, so that’s what I was going by. :person_shrugging:

This was my first thought too, tbh.

I personally like [name_f]Bria[/name_f]

I have a Breagha (said [name_f]Bree[/name_f]-ah), it’s gaelic for “beautiful”. If you’re not in an area where gaelic names are often used, I’d definitely go for [name_f]Brea[/name_f], looks a lot prettier than [name_f]Bria[/name_f] and I think has an easier pronunciation!!
