What do you all think of this name?

Yesterday we found out we are having a boy and my partner brought up the name Magnuson, and we both really like it! But I’m worried that it’s too rare and surname-y, because I can’t find it on any chart of any kind. He and my daughter have fallen in love with the nickname [name_m]Magni[/name_m], and I like the idea of having a longer, more distinguished name on the birth certificate. It also honors our Scandinavian heritage. I just want to see if anyone thinks it’s too out there. [name_u]Baby[/name_u]’s middle name will probably be a two-syllable honor name and our last name is one-syllable.

I only know it from [name_m]Kevin[/name_m] Magnussen (slightly different spelling) who is an F1 driver, I am not a huge fan of [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] or [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] either since I don’t like the ‘gn’ sound. I reckon there are a wide variety of Scandinavian names I would choose over that.

It’s not a terrible name just not one I would choose

I love the name [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], it sounds very regal and powerful. Magnuson is a little hard to pronounce for me and a bit of a mouthfull. I would go with [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] nn [name_m]Magni[/name_m].

I think it’s a weighty but cool name!

Hmm. It’s a little heavier than I typically prefer, but I think it’s usable if you love it!

I actually really like it. If you both love it, then I see no reason not to go for it!

Magnuson is so unexpected and strong

It’s hard to say. Prefer [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]

Congratulations on the news! Boy names are tricky, but I do think Magnuson can work. Like other comments though, its a lot to say for some. I personally find [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] distinguished on its own, along with greater familiarity. But the most significant thing is loving it and if you have that, you should go for it!

Personally, Magnuson is a bit much for me. I would go with [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] instead. It’s distinguished and honors your Scandinavian heritage without being quite such a mouthful.

I really really LOVE Magnuson! It’s immediately identifiable as a name to me. I’m in the UK, if this helps, where surnames as first names aren’t so common as the US, for example. It’s stunning!

It’s a lot to wear. Would you consider [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] on its own?

I’ve never heard of it before, I say its pretty unique but I don’t mind that a lot of names I love are extremely unique. If u both love it go for it

It’s not my cup of tea, but I think it could work! [name_m]Magni[/name_m] is a gorgeous nickname

Magnuson is really interesting. I’m not a big fan of the spelling. It looks sort of strange written out but I like how it sounds. It sort of sounds like [name_u]Madison[/name_u], which could be a more common alternative if you wanted. [name_m]Magni[/name_m] is adorable! I do prefer [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u] over Magnuson but I definitely don’t dislike it.

I love the name [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]. Magnuson is nice although long for day-to-day use but I think it is definitely usable. Personally, I would go to [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] as the given name And use it straight up although the nickname [name_m]Magni[/name_m] definitely works for either.

This is so interesting — it’s a close family name for me (Scandinavian on one side) and I’d love to see it on an actual child!!! I love the nickname [name_m]Magni[/name_m]!! While it is a surname in my family, nobody has ever had any difficulty with pronunciation and I think spelling it out is easy enough. If you love it I’d say go for it! [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] is also super cool, but I don’t think Magnuson is too much at all, maybe because I’m so used to it. It fits in with a lot of current names but definitely stands out.

(I’ll note I don’t like [name_u]Madison[/name_u] whatsoever, I’d go with [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] if you feel the need to be a little more mainstream.)

Hmmm when I said it out loud it kind of sounded like [name_u]Madison[/name_u]. not sure if that would bother you or not. If [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] isn’t long enough for your taste maybe you would like [name_u]Montgomery[/name_u]? I think [name_m]Magni[/name_m] could definitely be a nickname for that

Names like [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and Magnuson remind me of the condoms - Magnum :grimacing: But if you don’t mind that association for some people, then they seem like nice names.

Montgomery is alright with nn [name_m]Monty[/name_m].

As far as Scandinavian names, here are a few that I like:

Axel
[name_m]Eric[/name_m] / [name_m]Erik[/name_m]
[name_m]Fredrik[/name_m]
[name_m]Jakob[/name_m]
[name_u]Jensen[/name_u] / [name_m]Jenson[/name_m]
[name_m]Kirk[/name_m]
[name_m]Leif[/name_m]
[name_m]Ryden[/name_m]
[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
[name_m]Stefan[/name_m]

I quite like [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], but I feel that Magnuson is a bit overwhelming. I had to read over it a few times to work out the pronunciation clearly. If you really love it though, go for it. There’s nothing “wrong” with it, it’s just different and might take some getting used to for framing and friends. [name_m]Magni[/name_m] is a pretty cute nickname!
