[name_m]Just[/name_m] a little poll.
I call mine Mon Mère and Pon Père which translates to English as My Mother, My Father. My père is of [name_m]French[/name_m] background so that’s where we get that from. I actually really like it because it seems very natural for me to call my grandparents by that term of endearment, it sounds much prettier than gram and gramps and no one else I know calls theirs that.
I definitely feel like it’s something I’ll pass along… so my parents will become Mon Mère and Pon Père one day as well.
On the other side of the family it’s just… Grandma. lol.
My mum told my sister as soon as she fell pregnant with my mum’s grandson that she (my mum) is to be called [name_f]Nan[/name_f], not Grandma, as she feels like it ages her 20 years, lol.
I have three sets of grandparents, kind of. My dad was adopted, so I only know my biological fraternal grandmother. My mother’s father died before I was born. The only full set I had was my adopted fraternal grandparents.
Anyway, my adopted fraternal grandparents I called Grandma and Grandpa.
I called my maternal grandmother Granny.
I call my biological fraternal grandma Grandma [name_f]Suzie[/name_f].
[name_f]LoLo[/name_f] and Abuela - [name_f]LoLo[/name_f] being a nn for Abuelo - Spanish for Grandma and Grandpa
Grandma also [name_m]Gram[/name_m] and Grandpa
My son called my mother Big Momma when he first started to talk and my dad PopPop - soon became Granma and Granpa
My maternal grandparents are Grandmom and Bapu, when I was a toddler I started calling him that and it stuck for all the grandchildren. My paternal grandparents were Bumma (no idea where that came from) and grandfather.
My son calls his grandparents Grandmum, GranDebbie, and Grandpa. My grandparents, who my son has been lucky enough to grow up knowing as well, are Grandmom-The-Great and Bapu.
My mom’s parents are [name_f]Nana[/name_f] a and B’pa. My dad’s parents are Babci (bub-chee) sand Gramps. My babci’s parents were from Poland and Babci is polish for grandma.
My maternal grandparents: Grandma and Granddad
My paternal grandparents: Dandy and Papa
Since my nephews and niece have come, we are trying to let Nonni and Papa catch on, without much luck. They call my Grandma “[name_f]Gigi[/name_f]” {Great-Grandma : ) I take all credit}
My Dad’s parents are dutch, so they’ve always been [name_f]Oma[/name_f] and Opa, and Mum’s parents are British, so Grandma and Grandpa.
My Mum is similar to a previous poster’s - she wants to be [name_f]Nanna[/name_f], because she thinks Grandma seems old! I think Dad wants to be Opa. Both sets of OH’s grandparents are Grandma and Grandpa, so to distinguish them they have Grandma/pa Farm and Grandma/pa Town.
My dads side is Ammi and PopPoP (Ammi is Greek for grandma) and my mom’s side is Mema and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]. My mom also thinks grandma sounds old and has already announced when she becomes a grandma(probably in a a few years) she wants to be Mama because my sisters and I started calling her Mamabear when we were little and it has kind of just stuck.
We call my father’s mother [name_f]Nanna[/name_f] and my mothers parents [name_f]Nonna[/name_f] and Nonno, which is Italian for grandfather and grandmother (obviously, we’re Italian on that side and since they’re more fluent in Italian rather then English, it just made sense).
My maternal grandparents are Gran and Grandpa and paternal grandparents are Grandma and Grandpa. I was young when all of them passed so I honestly don’t remember what I called them then- besides Gran.
In my experience with my kids they will call their grandparents what comes naturally to them. My oldest calls both her grandmas [name_f]Nonna[/name_f], and my middle calls both her grandmas Nemma. They only have one living grandpa. Both call him Poppa. Wasn’t planned, it was just what came naturally to them.
My nieces and nephews call my parents Bumma and Bumpa. That’s what came naturally to them and it stuck.
I call my maternal grandparents Grandmother and Granddad (my grandmother refuses to be called grandma, granny, gran, etc. because she thinks it makes her sound too old lol). My paternal grandparents are Grandma and Grandpa, although I have called my Grandma “Gamma” since I was little.
One of my friends calls her grandma “Memaw”, which is pretty common in the South of the U.S. (she’s not from the South but does have family there).
