What do you do when a name is "too popular"?

So I’ve been crushing on the name [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] lately. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband tends to like “sweet, plain and sensible” names for girls, and I like those names too but don’t usually love them. We have [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] on our list. He also has mentioned liking [name_f]Rachel[/name_f].
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] ticks all our combined name boxes, except for my love of an unusual name. I just know SO MANY Hannahs. And I’m a little worried about the contrast between sisters Deliverance (our daughter) and something as popular as [name_f]Hannah[/name_f].
Any advice?

[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] is a gorgeous name. It’s solid, sweet and charming. I haven’t met any little Hannahs in a long while actually, but I do know many my age.
Usually, I’d say ‘if you love it, go for it’, however, if my sister was Deliverance and I was [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], I wouldn’t be happy tbh - it would feel less special, less magical? I’m not saying you wouldn’t have put thought into it, but I think I would feel like that. You’ve probably thought of it, but would [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f] ‘Hanna’ work at all?

[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] is lovely!

She’s sweet, reliable and has that girl next door quality which makes her feel so nostalgic. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name. I also feel that if you love a name use it honestly naming a child is a privilege so choose the name you love

However your daughter name is so impactful, incredibly striking that I have to agree with @Greyblue i think she feels not as sparkly. I think if I was [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] with a sister named Deliverance I would feel that my name was a little boring (hated writing that sentence gosh) but yes I feel something a bit bolder would work better. [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f] is a great suggestion I also thought [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f] ‘hanna’ could be cool.

Maybe a really unusual middle name to pair with it?

[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] is one of my all time faves despite its popularity.

A nickname might be able to bridge the gap between [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and Deliverance? Maybe something like
Hosannah nn [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]?
[name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_u]Havana[/name_u] nn [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]?

[name_u]Or[/name_u] a strong middle name like…
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] Clarimonde
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_u]Jubilee[/name_u]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Patience[/name_f]

If you want a different name try [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f] (one of my secret love names lol). She can still be called “Hannah” but it’s definitely a different name.

I definitely get wanting the daughters to have a similar yet unique feel. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps! :slight_smile:

Could you use it as a middle? I find [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] feels more compatible with Deliverance’s middle. I do think if between now and then Deliverance ever went by a more familiar nickname I could see [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] meshing better. Like if it were [name_f]Della[/name_f]. [name_f]Della[/name_f] and [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] would make sense.

[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] is a lovely name, but it is definitely very popular and very common, at least in the area I live. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] feels much less unique and sparkly than your daughter, Deliverance. I really love everyone’s suggestion of Hannahlore! Hannahlore is so much more whimsical & unique than [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], but still classic feeling, and I think it fits better with Deliverance as a sibset! Since you like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], and [name_f]Polly[/name_f], maybe you would like, [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] / [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f], [name_f]Roselore[/name_f], [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], [name_f]Emeraude[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], or [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f]. Names that come to mind when I think of Deliverance are [name_u]Blessing[/name_u], [name_f]Temperance[/name_f], [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_u]Florence[/name_u], [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], [name_f]Patience[/name_f], [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], and Benevolence.

I think [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f] is lovely. What about something like [name_f]Channa[/name_f] or Channai, or maybe [name_f]Shanna[/name_f] or [name_f]Shannai[/name_f]? [name_u]Or[/name_u], better yet, [name_f]Starshanna[/name_f]?

Oooh, [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f] and [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f] would be brilliant ways to get to [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] yet also match a sort of magic and majesty that a sister Deliverance has. :sparkles: I love!!

Many, many thanks for the comments so far! I love the suggestions of [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f] and [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f]! (Fun fact: [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f] were both “names that got away” for my parents. Their best friends used [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], and “Hosanna” turned out to be a boy. I did eventually get a sister Anna.)

@Greyblue, @cms1512, how are you pronouncing [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f]? 3 syllables or 4?

@hellobanjo, @LibelluleClaire, @Alix2016, if I used [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] as a first, I would definitely want a strong, unusual middle. It’s not set in stone, but we’re thinking of using [name_f]Eve[/name_f] as the middle for another daughter. It’s my mom’s middle name, and no one has honored her with a grandbaby name yet. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] is ok but not quite what I’d like.
Deliverance goes by [name_f]Livvy[/name_f] and [name_f]Liv[/name_f], but not the majority of the time. We usually use her full name at home.

@g.o.d.d.e.s.s thanks for the suggestions! I especially like [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], and [name_f]Mercy[/name_f].

Not needed given where you’re headed but I always say: no need for “perfect” sibset but is important for some equity between names - kids are sensitive to any resource differential between children from their parents, including names. I love the suggestions of more dramatic and powerful versions of or longer names for [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]. Good luck!

Deliverance ‘Livvy’ and [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f] ‘Hannah’ are so great together! :heart_eyes: the best of all worlds imho

I’m a little torn about this one, because despite the drastic difference in popularity, I absolutely love these names together.

I think if it were just Deliverance and [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], the contrast would seem more odd, but adding your sons’ names into the mix makes it feel more cohesive.

I also think [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] work really well with Deliverance as an older sister—with [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] my first thought is “rosemary, that’s for remembrance,” and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] has the same sweet, puritan chic, americana “vibe” as your daughter’s name.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] previous posters’ suggestions of [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f]. I also thought of [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] or [name_f]Johannah[/name_f].

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Hosanna[/name_f]. I’d consider spelling it Hosannah to make the [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] connection even more obvious. [name_f]My[/name_f] one thing for you with [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f] is that it’s a smoosh name if [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. Which then sounds a little too matchy with Deliverance and then are you setting yourself up for future girl names by having that common attribute start.
